Mistbury Catacombs is in the northern Springlands, just north of the Hill of Scavengers. The most reliable route from the south crosses Braelyn Bridge with a Grappling Hook, passes the Small Flint Mine, crosses the shroud strip, and continues north past the Hill of Scavengers. From the Ancient Vault—Farmer, travel west around the mountain and then north. At the hillside entrance, open the wooden doors, activate four switches inside, and loot Queen Pikemead’s sarcophagus to finish The Queen’s Tomb and obtain Pikemead’s Bulwark.
Where Mistbury Catacombs is located
Mistbury Catacombs is a Springlands dungeon built into a hillside north of the Hill of Scavengers. The entrance is a large structure integrated into the cliff, with an east-facing wooden double door. A Return Beacon stands at one end of the structure.

If you do not yet see a marker, the dungeon has not necessarily moved; activate the quest and check the northern Springlands again. The visible hillside building is a more dependable final cue than relying on a marker that may not appear yet.
There are two practical approaches. Players already exploring the northern Springlands can use the Ancient Vault—Farmer as a starting point. Players coming from the south should use Braelyn Bridge. The mountain’s eastern side is not a practical on-foot approach, so do not try to force a direct eastern climb.

Choose a route to the entrance
Route from the Ancient Vault—Farmer
- Leave the Ancient Vault—Farmer and travel west.
- Skirt the western side of the mountain instead of attempting to cross its eastern face.
- Continue north once you have cleared the mountain.
- Use the Hill of Scavengers as your final landmark and look for the catacomb structure built into the hillside.
This route is the shortest navigation plan when you are already in the northern Springlands because it avoids the bridge gap and most of the southern shroud crossing. Keep the mountain on the side of your route rather than trying to climb directly over it; the western detour is intentional.
Route from the southern Springlands
- Reach Braelyn Bridge.
- Use the Grappling Hook to cross the gap. Make sure the hook is equipped before you commit to the crossing.
- Continue northeast toward the Small Flint Mine.
- Keep moving toward the Hill of Scavengers.
- Cross the strip of shroud between the clear areas. Glide over it when the terrain allows, or run through it while your Shroud protection is active.
- Pass the Hill of Scavengers and continue north until the hillside entrance comes into view.
The bridge, mine and hill provide a useful sequence of landmarks. If you reach the Hill of Scavengers but cannot find the entrance, continue north rather than circling the hill; Mistbury Catacombs is beyond it. The shroud strip is between otherwise clear areas, so crossing it quickly is preferable to wandering around its edge and spending more protection time.
Which route should you use?
| Starting position | Best choice | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Springlands | Ancient Vault—Farmer, then west around the mountain and north | Do not attempt the mountain’s eastern face |
| Southern Springlands | Braelyn Bridge, Small Flint Mine, Hill of Scavengers, then north | Equip the Grappling Hook and budget Shroud protection for the crossing |
Both routes end at the same east-facing wooden doors. The southern route has the clearer chain of landmarks, while the Ancient Vault route is more efficient once you are already near the northern part of the region.
What to bring before entering
The dungeon combines traversal, ranged interaction, lockpicking and a timed shroud section. Prepare those requirements before leaving your base.
| Preparation | Why it matters | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Grappling Hook | Needed for Braelyn Bridge and several interior gaps. | Equip it before the bridge and keep it available on your action bar inside. |
| Bow, wand or staff | Some switches must be hit from a distance; ranged attacks also help against flying wraiths. | Carry a weapon with reliable projectile range, not only a melee weapon. |
| Lockpicks | An interior metal gate cannot be destroyed like the wooden entrance. | Reserve at least one lockpick for the gate on the west route. |
| Shroud protection | The lower floor is shrouded and has a time limit. | One walkthrough recommends at least five minutes of protection. Treat that as a safety target, not a guaranteed game requirement. |
| Combat supplies | You can meet archers, swordsmen, shielded fighters and flying wraiths. | Bring healing and enough ammunition or spell resources for a full dungeon run. |
| Character level | Guides describe the enemies as roughly level seven. | Around level seven is a sensible target, adjusted for your equipment and playstyle. |
Stamina management is as important as equipment. Grappling consumes stamina, and repeated panic-rolls while dodging tracking projectiles can leave you unable to escape a hazard or reach a ledge. Pause between movements when the room is safe and avoid spending every stamina point on unnecessary rolls.
Think of the checklist as a resource-order problem. The wooden entrance can be destroyed, but the west-side metal gate requires a lockpick. A ranged weapon serves two separate purposes: it activates the elevated switch and gives you a safer answer to wraiths. Shroud protection is needed both for the approach and for the lower floor, so arriving with only enough time for one mistake is risky.

The outside entrance is wooden. You can pick it, chop it with an axe, or destroy it with an explosive. Because the first door is breakable, save your lockpicks for the interior metal gate.

- Approach the east-facing wooden double door.
- Use an axe or explosive if you want to preserve lockpicks. Picking the door is also possible.
- Enter and identify the central causeway leading toward the sealed gate.
- Before exploring, note the Return Beacon and the route back to the entrance.
The sealed gate has four lock icons. Each icon lights when its corresponding switch is active. Use the entrance causeway, facing the sealed gate, as your reset point so you always know which direction leads back to the central chamber. If you become disoriented after a grapple or a lower-floor detour, return to this causeway rather than guessing at a side passage.
How the four-switch gate works
The four switches can be activated in different orders. The sequence below reduces backtracking by grouping the southern, upper, lower and western routes. Every switch must be active before the central gate opens. You do not need to match the order of the lock icons; watch the lights on the gate and use the causeway to confirm progress.
Switch 1: the southern grapple chamber
- From the entrance causeway, take the route on the south side.
- Descend into the lower part of the interior passage.
- Open the interior gate on this route.
- Climb through the chamber until you reach the Grappling Hook swing point.
- Use the hook to swing across to the far side.
- Activate the switch there.
- Return toward the central chamber rather than continuing to explore unfamiliar branches.
This room tests the basic movement pattern used throughout the catacombs: line up the grapple, preserve enough stamina for the landing and avoid jumping before the swing has carried you across. If the first swing leaves you short of the ledge, recover before trying again instead of repeatedly grappling with an empty stamina bar.

Switch 2: the elevated ranged switch
- From the central chamber, take the route that rises toward the upper platform.
- Grapple across the gap.
- Climb the stairs on the far side.
- Face the opposite wall and locate the visible switch.
- Shoot it with a bow, wand or staff.
You do not need to stand next to this switch. If the shot does not register, move to the edge of the platform for a clear line of sight instead of dropping down and trying to reach the wall physically. The elevated position is also a useful place to create distance from ground enemies before taking the shot.
Switch 3: the shrouded lower floor
- Take the southern route or the first left-hand route from the central area that descends toward the shroud.
- Enter the lower floor only after checking your remaining Shroud protection.
- Cross the broken platforms or the lava hazard carefully.
- Follow the lower passage around to the wall-mounted switch.
- Activate the switch and retrace your route before the timer becomes critical.
This is the section most likely to consume your time. Keep moving, but do not sprint blindly across a broken platform. A failed jump can cost more time than a controlled crossing, and exhausted stamina can prevent the grapple or dodge needed to leave. The objective is the wall switch; once it is active, do not detour to search for an alternate exit.
Switch 4: the lockpicked metal-gate route
- Return to the causeway and follow the western path.
- Use a lockpick on the metal gate.
- Climb the platform immediately beyond the gate.
- Traverse or grapple across to the final switch area.
- Interact with the switch.
The metal gate is different from the outside wooden door. An axe or explosive will not substitute for the lockpick here, so reaching this route without one can stop the run before the final switch. If you are planning your order, doing this route after the other switches makes the lockpick requirement easy to remember as the final access check.
Enemies and hazards inside
Shroud timer
The lower floor is shrouded, so your protection acts as a countdown. Check the timer before entering, avoid unnecessary detours and leave as soon as the switch is active. The five-minute recommendation is a useful buffer for exploration and combat, but your actual requirement depends on your route, movement speed and equipment. Entering with a buffer also gives you time to recover from a missed grapple or a blocked passage.

Tracking wraith projectiles
Flying wraiths fire projectiles that track your position. Running away to create distance, then answering with ranged attacks, is safer than standing still and trading hits. Dodge deliberately; a chain of panic-rolls can empty your stamina and leave you vulnerable to the next projectile. Fight from a platform or open section when possible so a tracking shot does not force you into a lava hazard or off a broken ledge.
Ground enemies
Expect shroud archers, swordsmen and shielded fighters alongside the wraiths. Use the room layout to separate enemies, attack shielded targets when their guard is open and avoid allowing a melee enemy to pin you against a ledge during a grapple sequence. Clearing a small area before lining up a grapple is often safer than attempting the swing while several enemies are in melee range.
Opening Queen Pikemead’s tomb
- Confirm that all four lock icons on the central gate are lit.
- Return to the central chamber using the causeway as your reference point.
- Pass through the now-opened metal gate.
- Approach Queen Pikemead’s sarcophagus.
- Loot the sarcophagus.
The tomb contains Pikemead’s Bulwark, a shield. Looting it completes The Queen’s Tomb and allows you to return to the Carpenter. The quest completion condition is the loot interaction itself, not merely opening the gate or reaching the chamber, so check the sarcophagus before leaving.
Entrance inscription and quest context
The entrance lore tablet ends with the line: One to Glory, One to Ice, One to Rule, and One to Life.
It is flavor text rather than an additional lever sequence; the practical puzzle is the four-switch gate described above. Reading the tablet is optional for navigation and does not replace activating any of the four switches.

The entrance is not marked
Check that The Queen’s Tomb is active. The map marker appears once the quest is active, so searching without the quest can make the location seem absent. You can still use the Hill of Scavengers and the hillside structure as visual navigation cues.
You cannot cross Braelyn Bridge
Equip the Grappling Hook and target the crossing point. The bridge approach is a traversal check, not a route intended to be climbed by ordinary jumping. If the hook is unavailable, start from the Ancient Vault—Farmer route instead of repeatedly attempting the gap.
The outer door will not open
Use an axe or explosive on the wooden door, or pick it normally. Do not spend your only lockpick outside if you still need to open the interior metal gate.

A switch appears inactive
Some switches are ranged targets. At the elevated platform, use a bow, wand or staff and verify that the projectile reaches the visible switch. For interactable switches, move close enough for the interaction prompt to appear. Check the central gate afterward; a lit lock icon confirms that the corresponding switch registered.
You ran out of Shroud protection
The lower-floor route should be attempted with a larger time buffer. Return after replenishing protection, then take the shortest path to the southern descent, cross the hazard carefully and leave immediately after activating the switch. Do not spend the remaining timer searching for loot or alternate corridors.
You are losing stamina during combat
Stop rolling continuously, create distance from tracking projectiles and let stamina recover before grappling. A controlled retreat is safer than spending the entire bar in repeated dodges. This matters especially on the upper and southern grapple routes, where arriving at a ledge with no stamina can turn a successful crossing into a fall.
The central gate still will not open
Return to the causeway and inspect all four lock icons. One unlit icon means one route was skipped, or a ranged switch was not hit successfully. Revisit the elevated platform first if its switch was only shot from an obstructed angle, then check the southern, lower-floor and western routes in turn.
Version and map-coordinate note
Map labels and dungeon mechanics can change with patches. One map reference identifies its data as Enshrouded 1.0, Steam build 25988036 and engine 0.4.1; its coordinates are measured in metres east and south of the world-map northwest corner. Use the named landmarks and the visible hillside structure as the primary navigation cues if a later update changes labels or marker placement.
Quick run checklist

- Carry a Grappling Hook, ranged weapon and at least one lockpick.
- Bring enough Shroud protection for the lower floor; five minutes is a sensible buffer.
- Reach the east-facing wooden entrance north of the Hill of Scavengers.
- Break the wooden door instead of spending a lockpick.
- Activate the southern grapple switch, elevated ranged switch, shrouded lower-floor switch and western metal-gate switch.
- Return to the central chamber after all four lock icons light.
- Loot Queen Pikemead’s sarcophagus for Pikemead’s Bulwark and complete the quest.

Do I need The Queen’s Tomb active to find the dungeon?
The map marker appears once The Queen’s Tomb is active. If there is no marker, use the named landmarks and hillside structure while checking that the quest is active.
How do I open the outside door?
The entrance door is wooden. Pick it, chop it with an axe or destroy it with an explosive. Breaking it is the best way to preserve a lockpick for the interior metal gate.
What do I need before entering Mistbury Catacombs?
Bring a Grappling Hook, a bow, wand or staff, at least one lockpick, healing and combat supplies, and enough Shroud protection for the lower floor. Around level seven is a sensible target because guides describe the enemies as roughly that level.
Where are all four switches in the Queen’s Tomb?
One is across the southern grapple chamber, one is on an elevated platform reached by grappling and must be shot from range, one is on the shrouded lower floor, and one is beyond the western lockpicked metal gate.
How do I open the four-button gate?
Activate all four switches, then return to the central causeway. The four lock icons light as switches register; once all are lit, the central metal gate opens.
Can I destroy the interior metal gate?
No. The western interior gate requires a lockpick. Axes and explosives that work on the outer wooden door do not replace this requirement.
How much Shroud protection should I bring?
One walkthrough recommends at least five minutes as a safety buffer. The actual time depends on your movement, combat and mistakes, so leave as soon as the lower-floor switch is active.
How do I get Pikemead’s Bulwark?
After all four locks light, pass through the opened central gate and loot Queen Pikemead’s sarcophagus. The shield is the reward, and looting it completes The Queen’s Tomb.
The Bottom Line
Start from the Ancient Vault—Farmer if you are already north, or cross Braelyn Bridge from the south. Reach the hillside entrance north of the Hill of Scavengers, break the wooden door, save a lockpick for the western metal gate, and activate the four switches: southern grapple, elevated ranged, shrouded lower floor and western gate route. Return when all four lock icons are lit, loot Queen Pikemead’s sarcophagus, and claim Pikemead’s Bulwark.
