VALORANT Map Rating is a 0–500 proficiency score with a C-to-S grade. It reflects your results on each map through Overall Win Rate, Attacker Win Rate, Defender Win Rate and Performance Score. Recent matches count more heavily, so improving those four areas in your current games is the most direct way to raise a map’s rating.
Map Rating is not a favorite-map selector. In ordinary matchmade queues, Riot’s map-selection system uses your recent five-game map history, removes maps you have already played twice, and chooses the least-played eligible map. Premier is the exception: your team can pick and ban maps before a game.

What Map Rating measures
Riot introduced Map Rating in Patch 13.08 for Competitive and Premier. Everyone started with a fresh record when the feature launched; historical match data was not used. You can see the rating in Agent Select, on the End of Game screen and in Career. Other players cannot see your Map Rating.

The feature is intended to answer a performance question: how effectively do you play a particular map? It is not a popularity poll, a vote on which map you enjoy, or a permanent preference that changes matchmaking.
The 0–500 scale and C-to-S grades
Every map receives a numeric rating from 0 to 500 and a letter grade from C through S. Riot has not published the exact boundaries for each letter, so you cannot reliably convert a particular number into a grade threshold from the available documentation. Riot also has not published a required number of matches before a rating becomes meaningful.
That uncertainty matters when you compare maps. Treat the displayed number and grade as a current indicator of proficiency, not as a permanent skill label. A rating can change as your recent results change, and a short recent run may matter more than older games.

- Overall Win Rate: how often you win on the map across both sides.
- Attacker Win Rate: your win rate in attacking rounds and matches.
- Defender Win Rate: your win rate while defending.
- Performance Score: Riot’s published performance component for the map.
Riot has confirmed that all four inputs matter, but it has not disclosed the mathematical conversion from those inputs to the 0–500 score or the C-to-S grade. Do not assume that kills, head-shot percentage or one memorable match alone determines the rating. The published model explicitly separates attack and defense and includes Performance Score alongside win rates.

- Agent Select: review the map rating while choosing your agent.
- End of Game: inspect the rating after the match and use the result while the game is still fresh in your mind.
- Career: compare ratings for different maps over time.
Competitive and Premier are the modes covered by Map Rating. The feature began with a clean slate, so ratings shown at launch did not include matches played before Patch 13.08.
How to improve a map rating
Because Riot weights recent matches more heavily, the best improvement plan concentrates on the four published inputs in your current games. The procedure below turns the rating into concrete practice decisions without pretending that Riot has published hidden thresholds.
1. Establish a baseline for each map
Write down the map, your displayed rating and grade, the result, your side-specific result, your agent and your role. Capture the same information after every relevant game for a consistent period. The goal is not to create an official formula; it is to avoid judging a map from one win, one loss or a particularly unusual team composition.
Keep your comparisons reasonably consistent. If you play one map mostly as a duelist and another mostly as a controller, the ratings may reflect different responsibilities as well as different map comfort. Note whether you were solo-queuing or coordinating with a regular group, because communication quality can affect the opportunities you create and convert.
2. Separate attack from defense
Riot treats Attacker Win Rate and Defender Win Rate as distinct inputs. A map can therefore expose a specific weakness even when your overall result looks average.

- If attacking is weaker, review whether your team reaches the site with enough time, whether your entry creates space, and whether your post-plant plans are clear.
- If defending is weaker, examine early deaths, missed information, retake timing and whether you give opponents uncontested territory.
- If one side is consistently stronger, use the stronger half to identify repeatable habits rather than assuming the map is simply “bad” for you.
These are coaching checks, not Riot-published scoring rules. The reason to make the split is that Riot explicitly includes separate attack and defense win rates, so a single overall percentage can hide the problem you need to fix.

Performance Score is one of the four published inputs. Focus reviews on actions that help your team secure rounds, not only on personal kill totals. A kill that opens a site, denies a retake or preserves a rifle can be more valuable to the round than a late exit frag, while a low-kill support round may still create the conditions for a win.
Use the performance feedback shown after games as a prompt for review. Look for repeatable decisions: surviving after gaining an advantage, using utility before an entry, trading a teammate, converting a man advantage, or choosing a safe post-plant position. Do not infer a precise Performance Score formula from the feedback; Riot has not published one.
4. Build a recent, useful sample
Recent matches have more influence than older matches. That means a short run of disciplined play can improve a rating faster than relying on results from weeks ago, but it also means a brief slump can make a map look worse than your long-term ability.
Play enough recent games to observe both sides and the roles you normally use. Avoid drawing a firm conclusion from a single match. Since Riot has not published a required match count, choose a repeatable personal window and label it clearly in your notes rather than presenting it as an official requirement.

5. Practice the map’s specific problems
Use Custom Games to rehearse the situations your review identifies. Practice site entries, defensive holds, retakes, post-plant lineups and rotations on the map where the relevant side split is weak. Recorded-round review is useful when you can pause before a decision and ask what information, timing or utility would have changed the outcome.
This practice advice is an inference from the four published inputs, not a Riot rule or a guaranteed rating threshold. Its purpose is to turn a low attack or defense result into a skill target that can influence future matches.
6. Recheck the rating after current games
After each new set of games, compare the updated rating with your notes. Ask whether the change coincides with better attack rounds, better defense rounds, more reliable round conversion or a stronger Performance Score. If the number moves without an obvious reason, remember that Riot has not published the weighting or conversion formula; avoid assigning a precise cause that the game does not show.

Map Rating can show which map currently produces the stronger result, but a useful comparison requires the same yardstick for both maps. Use the same period where possible, record both sides, and separate measurable proficiency from enjoyment.

Agent comfort, execute success, retake success, communication and round conversion are useful coaching dimensions, but Riot has only identified the first four published inputs as components of Map Rating. Use the additional axes to explain your results, not to claim they are hidden rating variables.
Map Rating is not a map preference setting
The phrase “improve my map preferences” can describe two different goals. You may want a higher proficiency score on a map, or you may want the game to give you a map you like more often. Map Rating addresses the first goal. It does not provide a personal favorite-map lock, a permanent dislike list or a documented ranked-map ban.
In ordinary matchmade queues, the documented selector looks at the maps each player used in that mode’s previous five games. It removes maps played twice in that five-game history, then selects the least-played remaining map. If every map has been removed, the system restores the pool and selects the least-played map.
Why a map can still appear again
The least-played rule reduces immediate repetition; it does not promise that a particular map will never return. A map may be the least-played eligible option, or the system may reach the all-maps-removed condition and restore the pool before selecting again. The rule is based on recent history for that mode, not on whether you personally marked a map as a favorite.

Switching between modes also matters when you interpret your experience: the documented history is described for the mode being selected. A Competitive history should not be treated as a personal preference control for Premier.
How Premier pick and ban works
Premier provides an actual team-controlled map choice. Before each game, teams use a pick-and-ban process. Once a map has been played, it is removed from the pool for the remaining games in that match.
This is different from ordinary matchmaking in two ways: the team participates in the decision, and the played map is unavailable for later games in that match. Premier’s pick-and-ban process is therefore the appropriate place to discuss a team’s preferred map or a map it wants to avoid. It does not change the meaning of your individual Map Rating.
A practical review routine
Before queueing
- Choose the role and agent you can play consistently on the map.
- Review one attack plan and one defense plan instead of trying to memorize every possibility.
- Set a side-specific focus, such as surviving the first defensive contact or creating an entry path.
During the match
- Track whether your first death, utility use and rotations support the round plan.
- Communicate information early enough for teammates to act on it.
- When the team gains an advantage, shift from hunting kills to protecting the win condition.
After the match
- Record the map, result, side results, agent, role and displayed rating.
- Read the performance feedback and mark one repeatable strength and one correctable mistake.
- Decide whether the next practice should target attack, defense, retakes, executes or round conversion.
- Review the updated rating only after noting the circumstances of the match.
Keeping this routine consistent makes your map comparisons more credible. It also prevents a fun map from being confused with a strong map: enjoyment is a valid preference, while Map Rating is intended to represent current performance.

- No public formula: Riot has not released the exact calculation that turns the four inputs into a 0–500 score.
- No public grade cutoffs: the thresholds for C, B, A, S and any intermediate grades are not documented in the cited notes.
- No public match-count requirement: Riot has not specified how many games are needed for a stable or meaningful rating.
- Recency matters: older results carry less weight than newer ones, so a rating is a moving snapshot.
- Private by design: other players cannot see your individual Map Rating.
- Different systems: rating measures proficiency; matchmaking selection and Premier pick-and-ban determine which map you play.
The most defensible interpretation is simple: use the rating to identify where your current map performance is strongest, use the attack and defense split to find the weakness, and use recent games plus focused practice to improve it. Do not treat the number as a promise that matchmaking will give you a preferred map.
