First identify the quest, boss, event, or competitive mode you are preparing for. Then open that champion’s live upgrade screen, record the exact catalyst, fragment, Gold, and ISO-8 requirements, and compare the spend with the value of adding another counter to your roster. A higher rank is not automatically the best use of materials: abilities, matchup coverage, prestige, Challenge Rating, progression gates, and upcoming store or quest rewards all matter.
This method also prevents the common “I have catalysts but cannot rank up” problem. The catalyst in your inventory may be the wrong tier, class, quantity, or progression requirement. The upgrade panel—not a remembered cost chart or a community list—shows what your account can use now.

What a rank-up should accomplish
A rank-up is efficient when it changes what your roster can do. Good reasons include gaining a reliable counter for a boss, meeting a difficulty or event requirement, improving a needed class matchup, raising a champion whose abilities fill a gap, or reaching a prestige target that matters to your alliance. “I have enough materials” is not, by itself, a reason to spend them.
Before selecting a champion, write down the immediate problem you want solved. A vague goal such as “make my account stronger” encourages random spending. A specific goal—“I need a poison-resistant attacker for this quest,” “I lack a science defender for this mode,” or “I need one more champion at the required rank”—gives you a testable decision.

- Content need: Which quest, event, Alliance activity, or competitive mode will use the champion?
- Ability value: Does the champion bring a counter, control effect, utility, or matchup tool that raw Attack and Health cannot replace?
- Coverage: Does the upgrade add a new option, or duplicate a role already covered by a stronger champion?
- Cost and timing: Which exact materials are missing, and could a selector, quest, or store reset provide them without spending a scarce currency?
- Account fit: Is the champion usable at your progression level, and will the rank help the mode you actually play?
Kabam’s 7-Star Ascension explanations present both concentrated investment and broader roster development as valid choices. The practical conclusion is not “always go tall” or “always go wide”; it is to spend where the next upgrade creates the most useful capability.
Start with the live upgrade screen
Open the champion from your roster and select the rank-up or upgrade control. Read every requirement displayed for the next rank before spending anything. The game’s current panel is authoritative for your champion’s rarity, rank, class, progression level, and any temporary requirement.
Check the complete requirement list
- The catalyst tier and class, including whether the requirement is a full catalyst or fragments.
- The number of fragments or catalysts currently owned and the amount still missing.
- Gold and ISO-8 requirements.
- Any level, quest, progression, or other eligibility condition shown by the interface.
- Whether the champion is eligible for the next rank, Ascension step, or another separate upgrade path.
Seeing a catalyst in your inventory does not prove that it is usable for the selected rank. A catalyst can be the wrong class, below the required tier, short of the required fragment total, or unavailable until your account reaches a progression gate. If the rank-up control is disabled, use the requirement list to identify the specific blocker instead of waiting for a symbol or guessing from a forum post.
Record the blocker before farming
Write the missing item in a simple note: for example, “two science Tier-X fragments and 40,000 Gold.” This turns farming into a targeted task. A random catalyst reward has little value if Gold or ISO-8 is the real constraint; a selector is valuable when it can choose the exact catalyst that prevents the upgrade.
Complete current requirements can vary by rarity and rank, and the reviewed official material does not provide a single up-to-date cost table for every combination. Do not substitute legacy tables for the values shown in your game.
Build a target before spending materials
Use this short planning sequence whenever you are considering a rank-up.

- Name the job. Identify the quest, boss, event milestone, defensive placement, prestige target, or progression gate the champion must address.
- List realistic candidates. Include champions you already own, not only the highest-rated names in a tier list. Check their abilities and the matchups they can actually handle.
- Compare role overlap. If another champion already solves the same problem with equal or better reliability, consider investing in a missing role instead.
- Open each candidate’s upgrade panel. Capture the exact materials, Gold, ISO-8, level, and eligibility requirements for the next rank.
- Check acquisition timing. Look at available daily quests, event rewards, selectors, store stock, and announced resets before using Units or another limited currency.
- Choose the smallest upgrade that solves the problem. A lower rank that provides the required counter can be more efficient than pushing a duplicate far beyond the need.
- Recheck after the upgrade. Confirm that the champion now meets the mode requirement and that your remaining materials still support your next planned target.
Get the exact catalyst instead of farming randomly
Kabam’s March 15, 2025 support guidance lists several sources for Catalyst Selectors: daily Catalyst Vault quests, Story Quests, monthly Event Quests, and event rewards. A selector is most efficient when you already know the exact tier or class blocking your planned rank-up.

Do not select a catalyst merely because it is the rarest option or because you may need it someday. Match the selector to the requirement on the champion’s upgrade screen. If your champion needs class-specific fragments, choosing a different class can leave the rank-up unavailable even though the selector was spent.
Schedule recurring quests deliberately
Kabam’s September 2025 quest update described two always-active daily quests: one focused on resources such as Gold and ISO-8, and another focused on catalysts. It also described weekday Supply Runs from Monday through Saturday that build toward a Sunday Super Run. The Sunday Super Version requires four Supply Intels. These details describe the announced system; rotations, rewards, and labels can change, so verify the live quest map each day.

Run the content that supplies your actual blocker. If the catalyst is ready but Gold is not, prioritize the resource quest; if Gold is available but the catalyst class is missing, a catalyst quest or selector has higher value.
Stores and currencies: spend only with a purpose
Stores are useful because they can convert limited currencies into a specific missing material, but stock, prices, access, and refresh schedules are not permanent. Check the live store before assuming that an item will remain available.

Radiance Store
Kabam’s Radiance announcement describes a competitive currency whose store focuses on champion acquisition and rank-up materials. The announcement states that rank-up materials reset every 35 days and consumables reset every 7 days. Full store access is described for Thronebreaker and above, while Cavalier and lower progressions can access Trophy Token trade-ins. These are announced intervals and access rules; the current in-game store is authoritative for your account and cycle.

Use a 35-day window to plan a known bottleneck, not to buy a convenient item without a target. If the needed material is not currently stocked, preserve Radiance for the next useful refresh rather than converting it into a lower-priority purchase.
Catalyst Store and Rank Up Now
Kabam’s Catalyst Store update describes progression-dependent stock and a Rank Up Now feature. Rank Up Now can directly rank an eligible champion by spending Units when you are short on rank-up material, with availability varying by progression. It is a shortcut with a real opportunity cost: Units may be needed for revives, quests, or other account goals, and the cited announcement does not establish that the conversion is generally favorable.
Use Rank Up Now only after confirming all of the following:

- The champion solves an immediate problem rather than a speculative future one.
- The missing material cannot reasonably be obtained through an available quest, selector, event, or store refresh.
- You understand the Unit cost shown in the current confirmation window.
- Spending those Units will not compromise a more important near-term activity.
Glory Store
Kabam’s explanation of the Glory Store says Glory can purchase rank-up materials and that repeated purchases can increase the price until a cooldown resets. Older announcements include concrete examples, but those examples should not be treated as current prices. Compare the live price with the material’s role in your plan, and stop buying when the escalating cost exceeds the value of advancing that particular champion.

Choose between deep investment and roster breadth
When you have enough materials for only one major decision, compare concentrating resources in a few champions with widening your roster.
Deep investment is strongest when
- A champion is a dependable answer to several current pieces of content.
- The next rank materially improves survivability, damage, control, or a required mode threshold.
- Your roster already has adequate class and utility coverage.
- The champion’s abilities remain valuable at higher difficulty, not merely its base stats.
Broader investment is strongest when
- You lack a counter for a recurring node, boss, or class matchup.
- One failed fight currently forces item use, revives, or repeated attempts.
- A mode requires multiple eligible champions or varied defenders.
- Your existing high-rank team overlaps heavily while another role is empty.
Kabam has stated that players may empower a few champions as far as possible or build a wider roster by investing in champions that cannot yet Ascend. The team also says champion abilities still matter. This means a lower-ranked specialist can be a better investment than a higher-ranked duplicate.

Compare a normal rank-up with 7-Star Ascension
Ascension adds a separate comparison whenever a 7-Star champion is eligible. Do not assume that Ascension automatically replaces a normal rank-up. Evaluate the exact champion, materials, mode, and ability value.

Kabam’s stated intention is that “Rank 5 and 6 Champions to be competitive for the foreseeable future, even if that specific Champion does not yet have access to Ascension.” Treat that as a developer design statement, not a promise that every champion performs identically. Compare the real use case, prestige relevance, Challenge Rating, stats, abilities, and remaining materials.
Do not sell catalysts just because they look surplus
Kabam confirms that selling Catalysts provides Gold and fragments toward the next Catalyst Tier. The cited support guidance does not establish when selling is better than retaining the catalyst, so there is no universal “sell all excess” rule.
Before selling, check:
- Whether the catalyst appears in a planned upgrade for a champion you expect to use.
- Whether your roster may need the class or tier for a mode requiring several champions.
- The exact Gold and fragment return shown in the sale confirmation.
- Whether the immediate return solves a real blocker or merely increases a resource you already have.
Sell only after comparing the immediate return with the possibility that replacing the catalyst later will require Units, store currency, or a long quest cycle.
Fix the “blue arrow” and unavailable rank-up confusion
Players often describe waiting for a blue arrow or another visual prompt before upgrading. The practical test is not the icon; it is the champion’s current upgrade screen.
- Open the roster and select the intended champion.
- Open the rank-up or upgrade panel.
- Read each listed requirement and identify the first unmet condition.
- Check whether the missing item is a full catalyst, a class-specific fragment, Gold, ISO-8, level, or progression eligibility.
- Obtain that exact requirement through the appropriate quest, selector, event, store, or normal play.
- Return to the same panel and confirm that the requirement is now satisfied before spending anything.
If the panel still does not enable the upgrade, treat the displayed condition as the authoritative explanation. A community forum discussion can describe a player’s experience, but it is not a guaranteed statement of the current interface or requirements.
Examples of resource-efficient decisions
You have a catalyst but lack a counter
Your inventory contains enough materials to rank a duplicate attacker, but a current quest repeatedly defeats your roster with a specific defensive effect. Instead of ranking the duplicate, identify a champion whose abilities address that effect. If the counter needs a different catalyst class, direct a selector or catalyst quest toward that class. The broader upgrade may save revives and open more content than a small increase to an already-covered role.
You have a 7-Star eligible for Ascension and a Rank 5 specialist
Compare the mode you are preparing for. If the 7-Star’s Ascension improves stats but does not supply the needed utility, while the Rank 5 specialist provides the required counter, the specialist can be the more efficient choice. Kabam’s power-scaling statement supports keeping Rank 5 and Rank 6 champions competitive; it does not require every account to prioritize Ascension immediately.
The store offers a shortcut but your target is not urgent
If Rank Up Now can spend Units to finish a champion who has no immediate content assignment, preserve the Units. Wait for a quest, selector, event reward, or store refresh that addresses a defined need. The shortcut becomes more defensible when the champion is required now and the alternative would block progress at a greater cost.

Run the resource-focused daily content described in Kabam’s September 2025 quest update rather than buying another catalyst. Spending a limited currency on a catalyst cannot solve a Gold shortage.
A repeatable pre-spend checklist
- What exact content will this champion enter?
- What matchup, node, role, or rank requirement does the champion solve?
- Which ability makes this champion useful beyond raw stats?
- What does the live upgrade screen require, and which item is the actual blocker?
- Can a daily quest, Story Quest, monthly Event Quest, selector, or event reward provide it?
- Would a store reset change the decision? Check Radiance’s announced 35-day material cycle and 7-day consumable cycle against the live store.
- Am I about to spend Units, Glory, Radiance, or a catalyst on a champion with no immediate assignment?
- Does this upgrade add roster coverage, or duplicate a role I already have?
- For a 7-Star, have I compared Ascension stats, Challenge Rating, abilities, prestige relevance, and materials with a normal rank-up?
- If selling a catalyst, is the displayed Gold and fragment return more valuable than retaining it for a planned upgrade?
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Official announcements establish the listed sources, store concepts, refresh intervals, and developer comparisons, but they do not provide a complete current table of Gold, ISO-8, and catalyst costs for every rarity and rank. They also do not establish a universal champion priority list for every progression level or game mode. Verify the live game for costs, stock, eligibility, and rewards, and make the final decision from your roster’s actual gap.
The most durable rule is simple: spend materials to solve a named problem, use selectors and stores to target the exact bottleneck, and preserve flexibility when no immediate content justifies the cost. That approach prevents random rank-ups without requiring you to wait for a particular visual prompt or follow a one-size-fits-all tier list.
