Use curl to request a registry’s documented HTTP endpoint, then use jq to inspect or filter its JSON response. The exact URL, query parameters, authentication rules, and JSON fields depend on the registry, so start with its API documentation rather than guessing.
How the curl-and-jq workflow works
curl makes the HTTP request and retrieves the response. jq formats JSON or selects and transforms values in that response. These are separate steps: a successful request does not guarantee that the response has the fields your jq filter expects.

The jq project describes the tool as a “command-line JSON processor.” Its filters operate on the actual JSON structure returned by the endpoint.

Find the registry’s documented search endpoint and check its parameter names, pagination method, response format, and access requirements. Registry interfaces are not interchangeable: for example, npm documents text, size, and from for its search endpoint, while the MCP Registry documents a search parameter on its server-list endpoint. Use the base URL, path, and parameter names specified by the registry you intend to query. Do not assume a registry is public to read or that it uses a particular authentication method; confirm access rules in its documentation.
Make a request and inspect its JSON
For an endpoint you have verified in the relevant documentation, the general pattern is:

curl --silent --show-error 'https://REGISTRY-BASE/documented-search-path?query=TERM' | jq '.'This is a placeholder pattern, not a runnable URL. Replace the host, path, and parameter with the registry’s documented values. The identity filter . lets jq print the JSON without selecting fields, which makes it easier to see whether the response is an object, an array, or an object containing an array.

For query values that contain spaces or punctuation, use the documented parameter name and encode the value. With curl, --get and --data-urlencode provide a practical way to add encoded query parameters:

| jq '.'Here, the host and parameter are illustrative; replace them with the endpoint and parameter documented by your registry.
Write a jq filter for the response you actually received
After inspecting the JSON, choose a filter that matches its structure. For an object, .field accesses a field. For an array, a filter often iterates over entries with []. If the response is an object containing an array, the path may look like .items[]. Those names are examples only; use the keys shown in the response.

Quote the jq program so the shell passes it to jq as intended. Single quotes are a common choice in Unix shells:

A template such as .results[] | .name is not universal.

Example: search the npm registry
npm’s documented search endpoint is GET /-/v1/search; its search parameters include text, size, and from. For this npm-specific response, the following command requests results for “example,” asks for 10 results, and selects package details from each result:

| jq '.objects[] | .package | {name, version, description}'The filter follows the documented search response structure: it iterates through objects, selects each package, and outputs its name, version, and description. Do not reuse this endpoint or filter for another registry without checking that registry’s documentation and response.
Diagnose request and filter problems separately
If the command fails or prints unexpected output, check each stage in order:
- Check the request. Verify the documented URL, path, parameter names, and access requirements.
--show-errormakes curl display transfer errors even when--silentsuppresses its progress display. - Inspect the response body. First run the request with
| jq '.'or inspect the returned body without a field-selection filter. Confirm whether it is valid JSON and identify its real keys and nesting. - Test the jq filter against that shape. Adjust field names and array iteration to match the response. A valid HTTP response can still produce empty or incorrect output when the filter assumes the wrong structure.
Search parameters and pagination also vary. npm documents offset-style parameters such as size and from; the MCP Registry documents cursor pagination as well as registry-specific filters. Check the relevant documentation before adapting either approach.
