Check three things separately: whether the new iPhone supports MagSafe magnetic alignment, whether the accessory physically fits, and whether it delivers the charging speed or function you expect. An older MagSafe charger may still charge a newer phone over Qi even if it does not magnetically attach or reach the phone’s fastest charging rate.
Start with the exact iPhone and accessory models
“New iPhone” is not specific enough to determine compatibility. Find the iPhone’s exact model in Settings or on its box, then check Apple’s current MagSafe charger guidance and the phone’s specifications. Identify the accessory too: a charger, case, mount, wallet and battery pack have different compatibility questions. Apple’s guidance for its chargers does not establish that every third-party magnetic accessory fits or works across generations.

For anything other than a basic charger, check the accessory maker’s compatibility list for your exact iPhone model. Then verify attachment, physical clearance and the particular function you need.
Understand magnetic attachment versus wireless charging
Magnetic alignment and Qi charging are separate outcomes. Apple says its MagSafe Charger magnetically aligns with supported MagSafe iPhones, including iPhone 12 and later MagSafe families. Qi charging is available on iPhone 8 and later, including models Apple identifies as non-MagSafe, such as iPhone 16e and iPhone 11, X, XS, XR and 8. A Qi-compatible charger may therefore charge a phone without snapping into place magnetically. See Apple’s MagSafe Charger listing for its compatibility details.

That distinction matters when checking an old charger: successful charging does not prove magnetic alignment, and magnetic attachment alone does not prove that the phone is charging at its expected speed.
Check the charger generation, adapter and phone’s charging limit
If charging speed matters, inspect the charger for its Apple part number and check the power adapter’s rating. Apple’s current guidance distinguishes charger generations and specifies adapter requirements; its stated peak rates are maxima under those conditions, not guaranteed real-world results.

Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications give one current-generation example: up to 25W MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging, alongside a magnet array, alignment magnet and accessory-identification NFC. Do not assume that one iPhone’s maximum applies to every model.

Check whether an old case fits and allows charging
A case has to fit the exact phone, leave its camera and controls clear, and allow the charging setup to work. A case made for an earlier iPhone may not fit a new one even if both support MagSafe. Apple’s iPhone cases listing identifies cases designed for specific iPhone models; match the case to the phone rather than relying on a general “MagSafe” label.
Test charging with the case on, then remove it and try again if charging is slow or absent. Apple advises removing thick, metal or battery cases when troubleshooting wireless charging. A difference between those two tests points to the case or its placement as a factor, but does not by itself establish that the case is the only cause.

Test the setup in a controlled way
- Confirm the models. Record the exact iPhone model and the accessory model. For an Apple MagSafe Charger, find its part number on the device or cable.
- Use the recommended power source. Connect the charger to an adapter meeting Apple’s requirements for that charger and phone combination.
- Position the phone. Set the charger on a stable surface and center the iPhone on the charging area. For a Qi pad without magnets, careful placement matters because it will not snap into alignment.
- Check for charging. Look for the charging icon, then assess whether the result meets your needs. A charging icon confirms that charging began; it does not confirm the peak rate.
- Remove anything between the phone and charger. Take payment cards, security badges, passports and key fobs out of the charging sandwich. Apple warns that magnetic strips or RFID chips can be damaged.
- Repeat without the case. If charging is slow or does not start, remove the case and retry. Compare the result with the case on.
- Check third-party support. If the setup still fails, consult the accessory maker’s compatibility information. Apple recommends contacting the manufacturer with questions about third-party chargers.
Apple’s wireless charging instructions explain that Qi-certified chargers can charge iPhone, while MagSafe’s magnetic alignment can improve positioning for faster, more efficient charging. Performance can vary by Qi charger.
When an accessory does not work as expected
Give the manufacturer the details needed to identify the mismatch: the exact iPhone model, accessory model, MagSafe Charger part number if applicable, adapter rating, whether the phone attaches magnetically, and whether charging works with the case removed. For mounts, wallets and battery packs, also describe the specific problem—such as poor attachment, blocked camera access or a missing function—rather than reporting only that it is “incompatible.”

If an older charger still charges over Qi but lacks the attachment or speed you want, replacement is optional. First compare its part number and adapter against Apple’s guidance and check the accessory maker’s support for your exact phone; do not assume a third-party MagSafe label guarantees cross-generation compatibility.
