For the 2026 VCT EMEA Kickoff, an individual player or independent Premier team could not register directly. Riot filled the 12-team event with EMEA partner teams, the two organizations promoted through the previous Ascension system (PCIFIC Esports and ULF Esports), and returning partner Gentle Mates. A new organization therefore had to enter Riot’s competitive pathway first: build an eligible roster, compete in Premier, reach the appropriate EMEA Challenger League, and then pursue promotion or a league-level roster place. Riot’s announced 2027 format changes that answer: four Open Qualifier teams are planned alongside eight partner teams, so the current season’s rules and registration notice are decisive.
What “qualifying for Kickoff” meant in 2026
The 2026 EMEA Kickoff was a league-level event, not a public tournament with a sign-up form. Riot’s official season primer listed 12 teams: the regular VCT EMEA partner organizations, newly promoted Ascension qualifiers PCIFIC Esports and ULF Esports, and returning partner Gentle Mates. The field had already been determined through the VCT ecosystem before Kickoff began.

That distinction matters because Premier success did not itself produce a 2026 Kickoff invitation. Premier was the entry point for developing a team, while the Kickoff field was selected at the VCT league level. A team starting today should think in stages rather than look for a single Kickoff application:
- Organize a compliant team and roster.
- Enter VALORANT Premier.
- Win or advance into the correct EMEA Challenger territory.
- Perform in Challengers EMEA and pursue the applicable promotion or league route.
- Only after reaching that level can a team be considered for a future Kickoff field under that season’s rules.
Because Kickoff regulations change, the 2026 structure should not be treated as a permanent qualification rule. Riot’s June 2026 announcement describes a different access model for 2027.

The route from a new team to the VCT ecosystem
1. Create an organization, not just a stack of players
A competitive five-player group needs an organization capable of entering leagues, signing contracts, handling travel and complying with Riot’s tournament administration. The practical starting work includes identifying a legal entity or team operator, appointing a responsible manager, documenting player agreements and preparing for eligibility checks.
Riot’s rules distinguish regional players from global players and apply age, residency, contract and roster requirements. These requirements can affect whether a lineup may enter a particular competition even when the players are mechanically strong. Resolve those questions before committing to a schedule or signing players who cannot be used together.
2. Build a roster that fits the applicable rule set
Riot’s 2026 season announcement described standard Challenger rosters as three players from the relevant region and two global players. For the 2026 Path to Champions, EMEA teams could use players aged 16 or older and up to two imports from outside the region, subject to the event’s rules. Those statements describe specific 2026 frameworks; they are not a guarantee that every future event will use the same age, import or residency limits.

Keep a substitute plan that also satisfies the rules. A replacement who is ineligible can create a competitive and administrative problem at the same time.
3. Start in VALORANT Premier
Riot describes Premier as the first organized step for teams that want to progress through the competitive system. Teams compete in Premier, and teams that win their Premier competitions can promote into their regional Challenger Leagues. Premier is therefore a development and qualification route, not a 2026 Kickoff lobby.
Use Premier to establish a repeatable team rather than treating it as a one-off trial. Set roles, map protocols, review procedures and attendance expectations before the first match. Promotion-level competition exposes weaknesses in communication and preparation that ranked games do not reliably reveal.

4. Enter the EMEA Challenger territory mapped to your roster
Riot lists six EMEA Challenger territories:
| Territory | What an aspiring team must determine |
|---|---|
| North East | Whether the roster satisfies the territory’s current residency and participation rules. |
| France | Which players count as eligible regional players under the current competition rules. |
| Spain | Whether the team’s player mix and registration documents meet the territory requirements. |
| DACH | How residency, imports and any local conditions apply to the proposed lineup. |
| Türkiye | Whether the roster can be registered in this territory rather than another EMEA league. |
| MENA | Which regional eligibility definitions apply and where the team is permitted to compete. |
The territory is not merely a branding choice. Residency determines where a roster can compete, and the rules can change by season or event. Confirm the mapped league with Riot’s current rulebook before registering players or booking travel.

After Premier promotion, the team must turn a qualifying appearance into sustained results in Challengers. For the 2026 Path to Champions, Riot said points and placement from Challengers EMEA would determine the top four seeds. The exact schedule, scoring and tiebreak procedures are versioned, so use the rule set attached to the current season rather than relying on a previous bracket.
Performance includes more than match wins. A team may need to maintain an eligible roster, meet check-in times, submit accurate documents and follow broadcast, equipment and competitive-integrity requirements. Administrative failures can remove a team from contention even when its in-game record is strong.
6. Reach the league or promotion route that feeds Kickoff
The 2026 field demonstrates the two broad ways an organization could appear at the top level: a partner-team place or promotion through the prior Ascension system. A Premier team did not jump directly into Kickoff. It had to progress through the regional and international structure that led to a league-level place.
For a future season, the route could include an open qualifier, an Ascension competition, a partner slot, or another mechanism Riot announces. Treat the season announcement as the controlling document and do not assume that a 2026 route remains available.

- Regional status: Identify which players count toward the required regional quota for the selected Challenger territory.
- Imports: Track the number of players from outside the region. The 2026 EMEA Path to Champions framework allowed up to two such imports, but a different event may impose another limit.
- Age: The 2026 EMEA Path to Champions rules allowed players aged 16 or older. Check the player’s age on the date and in the competition named by the current rules.
- Contracts: Confirm that every player is free to register and that contracts meet Riot and team requirements.
- Substitutes: Apply the same eligibility review to substitutes and emergency replacements.
- Documents: Keep identity, residency and consent documentation ready in the format and time window Riot requires.
Do not infer eligibility from a player’s nationality alone. Riot’s definitions, event exceptions and proof requirements determine the result.
How the 2026 EMEA Kickoff tournament worked
Once a team was in the 2026 field, the event itself used a triple-elimination format. Each team had three lives: an initial loss moved it to the Middle Bracket, a second loss moved it to the Lower Bracket, and a third loss eliminated it.
| Event element | 2026 rule | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Bracket format | Triple elimination | A team could lose twice and remain alive, but a third loss ended its run. |
| Upper Bracket final | Best-of-five | The finalist needed three map wins. |
| Middle Bracket final | Best-of-five | The finalist needed three map wins. |
| Lower Bracket final | Best-of-five | The finalist needed three map wins. |
| Other series before finals | Best-of-three | The series ended when one team reached two map wins. |
| Masters qualification | Three places | The Upper, Middle and Lower bracket champions each advanced to Masters Santiago. |
The top four teams from Champions 2025—Fnatic, Team Liquid, GIANTX and Team Heretics—received byes into Round 2 of the Upper Bracket. A bye was a seeding advantage for those established teams, not a shortcut that a new Premier roster could claim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy triple elimination changed preparation
Triple elimination rewarded recovery as well as opening-round strength. A team that lost early still needed a plan for the Middle Bracket, and a second loss required immediate adaptation in the Lower Bracket. Preparation therefore had to include opponent-specific reviews, a deep map pool and enough physical and mental capacity for a longer run.
The bracket also created three separate championship paths rather than one final match. Winning any one of the three bracket finals secured a Masters Santiago place, so a team did not necessarily need to win the Upper Bracket to reach the international event.
What Kickoff awarded beyond a Masters place
Kickoff also contributed Championship Points to the Champions Shanghai qualification race. Riot’s 2025 points allocation for the 2026 structure was:

| Kickoff finish | Championship Points | Source qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Winner | 4 | Riot Games, 2025 |
| Second place | 3 | Riot Games, 2025 |
| Third place | 2 | Riot Games, 2025 |
| Fourth place | 1 | Riot Games, 2025 |
Riot’s primer said the two EMEA teams with the most points at the end of the season qualified for Champions Shanghai. Stage 2 placement was another Champions route under the 2026 season structure. Consequently, reaching Kickoff was valuable for two separate reasons: a bracket championship could send a team to Masters Santiago, while a high finish also improved its season-long Champions position.
2026 and 2027: the access model is not the same
Riot’s June 2026 announcement describes a 2027 Kickoff model with eight partner teams and four teams from Open Qualifiers. The top three teams from each territory were scheduled to qualify for Masters. This is materially different from the 2026 EMEA field, which was a 12-team league-level event containing partner and Ascension-connected teams.
| Question | 2026 EMEA Kickoff | Announced 2027 model |
|---|---|---|
| Entry source | Partner-team field plus teams promoted through the previous Ascension system. | Eight partner teams plus four Open Qualifier teams. |
| Public route for a new team | No public individual or standalone Premier registration for Kickoff. | An Open Qualifier route is planned, subject to the published notice and rules. |
| Open slots | None in the 2026 field. | Four announced Open Qualifier places. |
| Masters places | Three, one for each bracket champion. | Riot announced the top three teams from each territory would qualify for Masters. |
| Residency and roster rules | Applied under the 2026 event and Challenger regulations. | Must be checked in the 2027 rule set; do not carry forward 2026 assumptions. |
| Bracket and match format | Triple elimination; best-of-three series before finals and best-of-five bracket finals. | Not established by the information above; use the official 2027 event rules. |
| Championship Points | 4, 3, 2 and 1 for first through fourth. | Not established here; wait for the 2027 points announcement. |
The 2027 announcement creates a potential direct qualification opportunity, but it does not make every Premier roster eligible automatically. An organization would still need to satisfy the Open Qualifier’s territory, age, residency, roster, registration and competitive requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical qualification plan for an aspiring EMEA organization
Phase A: establish eligibility
- Choose the EMEA territory that matches the roster under the current residency definitions.
- List every starter and substitute with age, residency, nationality or regional status as required by the rules, contract status and proof documents.
- Check the permitted mix of regional players and imports for the exact event, rather than using the 2026 three-regional-plus-two-global description as a universal template.
- Assign one person to monitor Riot announcements, rule revisions, registration windows and administrative deadlines.
Phase B: compete in Premier
- Register the organization and roster in the Premier competition available to the territory.
- Set a fixed practice schedule that covers map vetoes, pistol-round plans, anti-stratting and review.
- Track attendance, match reporting and any Premier promotion criteria exactly as published.
- Use the competition to identify a stable starting five and a compliant substitute plan.
Phase C: convert promotion into Challenger results
- Complete the Challenger registration process after earning the applicable promotion.
- Recheck residency, age, imports and contracts when moving between competitions.
- Prepare for a longer season: maintain coaching, analysis, travel and backup-player resources.
- Track standings, points, placement and tiebreakers under the current Challengers EMEA rules.
Phase D: target the top-level route
- Identify whether the season offers promotion, Ascension, Open Qualifiers, partner vacancies or another route into the VCT league.
- Read the event-specific rules before entering; note the number of slots, match format, dates, location and roster lock.
- Budget for travel and operations only after the registration and eligibility conditions are confirmed.
- Submit documents before the deadline and retain proof of every submission.
Common mistakes that block a Kickoff attempt
Assuming Premier is a direct Kickoff qualifier
Premier is the beginning of the organized pathway. A Premier win can lead to a Challenger League promotion, but it did not award a 2026 EMEA Kickoff place by itself.
Using the wrong Challenger territory
EMEA is divided into North East, France, Spain, DACH, Türkiye and MENA. Registering in a territory that does not match the roster’s eligibility can invalidate the plan before competitive results matter.
Treating 2026 rules as permanent
The 2026 event had no Open Qualifier places, while Riot announced four Open Qualifier teams for the 2027 model. Entry source, roster limits, bracket format, Masters places and points can all change.
Best Value
Ignoring substitutes and late roster changes
A compliant starting lineup does not automatically make every replacement eligible. Audit the full registered roster and check the deadline for changes.
Planning around an unconfirmed format
Triple elimination and three Masters places were features of the 2026 EMEA Kickoff. They should not be assumed for a later event until Riot publishes the season’s primer and competition rules.
Confusing Kickoff success with automatic Champions qualification
Kickoff awarded Championship Points and offered Masters Santiago places through its three bracket champions. Champions Shanghai qualification also depended on the season’s points race and Stage 2 route.

How to verify the current season before spending money
Use a short verification process whenever Riot announces a new season:
- Find the current VCT season announcement and identify the stated Kickoff entry sources.
- Read the event primer for field size, invited or promoted teams, format and international qualification.
- Open the current Riot rules library and confirm residency, age, import, contract, substitute and roster-lock provisions.
- Check the relevant EMEA Challenger territory and its registration calendar.
- Confirm whether the event awards Championship Points and how those points interact with Stage 2 and Champions qualification.
- Save the version and publication date of each rule document used for the team’s decision.
If the announcement and a later rule update differ, use the later operative rule for the specific competition. Ask Riot’s official competition support channel about an unresolved eligibility question before signing a player or booking international travel.
So, can any Premier team enter VCT EMEA?
No. In the 2026 structure, Premier was an upstream development route. A team had to progress into its regional Challenger League and then reach the league-level promotion or selection mechanism that fed VCT. The announced 2027 Open Qualifier model may give a qualifying team a more direct Kickoff opportunity, but only if it satisfies that event’s published conditions.
Does winning Kickoff qualify a team for Masters?
For 2026 EMEA Kickoff, winning one of the three bracket finals qualified that bracket champion for Masters Santiago. There were three bracket champions, so three Masters places. This was separate from the route by which an organization first entered Kickoff.

Bottom line for a new EMEA team
There was no 2026 click-to-enter Kickoff registration. Build a compliant organization, use Premier as the starting point, promote into the correct EMEA Challenger territory, and earn a top-level place through the season’s stated pathway. For 2027, monitor the Open Qualifier announcement closely: Riot has announced four Open Qualifier teams, but the exact eligibility, format and registration rules determine whether your roster can use that route.
