First, check that your phone is the standard Samsung Galaxy S21 5G and that the OtterBox label names that same model. OtterBox lists cases separately for the Galaxy S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra; do not assume a case made for one fits another. Then identify your case family, because the fitting steps differ by design.
Check the model and case before fitting
- Read the phone’s model name and confirm it is the standard Galaxy S21 5G—not the S21+ 5G or S21 Ultra 5G.
- Check the case packaging or product listing for the same Galaxy S21 5G designation. OtterBox’s model listings distinguish the S21 variants.
- Identify the case family and construction. A Defender has a multi-piece shell and slipcover; a Commuter has a slipcover and a separate outer shell. Other designs may fit differently.
OtterBox’s Samsung instructions index has a Galaxy S21-family section, but its listed S21 resource is an Alpha Flex screen-protector video—not a Galaxy S21 case-installation guide. OtterBox says to “simply click the link to download the specific instruction sheet for your OtterBox or watch the video (if available)!” Use the product-specific sheet or video when one is available.

Fit a Defender Series case
OtterBox’s Defender Series guide describes a general multi-piece installation, not a procedure specifically verified for the Galaxy S21. Use these steps only if your case has the same shell-and-slipcover construction, and follow the snap locations shown for your particular case.
- Remove the case from its holster, if it has one.
- Peel the outer slipcover away from the hard shell.
- Separate the two shell halves by releasing the side snaps at the indicated arrows.
- Place the phone in the bottom shell half, then fit the top half over it.
- Snap the shell halves together along all edges.
- Wrap the slipcover around the assembled shell, seating it in the grooves and notches.
Fit a Commuter Series case
OtterBox’s Commuter guide is for the Galaxy S23, not the S21. Treat it as general guidance only if your Galaxy S21 Commuter has the same slipcover-and-outer-shell design; if the parts or instructions differ, follow the guide supplied for your case.

- Wrap the slipcover around the phone.
- Fit the outer shell over the bottom of the slipcover, including the charging-port door where applicable.
- Press around the edges to secure the case.
Fit a one-piece or other OtterBox design
Do not use Defender or Commuter steps for a Symmetry or another case with different construction. Use the instructions included with that product or find its specific instruction sheet or video through OtterBox’s instructions index. As you fit any case, line up the camera opening, buttons, charging port and phone edges before pressing the parts into place.

- Stop rather than forcing it. OtterBox describes its cases as precision-fit; parts that do not align may indicate the wrong phone variant or a different case construction.
- Recheck the model marking on the case and the phone, then compare your case with its product instructions.
- If the model matches but the parts still do not line up, contact OtterBox support or consult the instructions for that exact case.
If the case is dirty before fitting, OtterBox says cases can generally be washed with mild soap and water, then air-dried or dried lightly with a paper towel. Do not fit a wet phone or case.
