For essays and short drafts, a restrained editor with portable files may be enough. For a novel, thesis, or screenplay, chapter-level organization, research storage, revision tools, and compilation can matter more than an empty-looking screen. Choose by matching those needs to your devices, preferred text format, sync requirements, and budget.
Start with the kind of writing project you have
A distraction-free writing app is not necessarily a good long-form project manager. First decide whether you mostly need a quieter place to compose or a system for keeping a complex manuscript in order.

Essays, articles, and short drafts
If a project is a handful of documents, a basic editor with folders, reliable saving, and straightforward export may be all you need. Extra outlines, research panes, and project controls can become another interface to manage rather than a help.

Books, theses, and screenplays
For work with many chapters or scenes, look for section-level organization, project-wide search, an outline or corkboard, research storage, revision snapshots, writing targets, and a way to compile the manuscript into the format you need. Scrivener’s publisher feature listing describes these kinds of long-project tools, including research imports and compilation to Word, PDF, EPUB, and Final Draft. Those features are useful when structure is part of the work; they are not a reason to choose a more complex app for a project that does not need them.

Decide what “distraction-free” should mean for you
Minimal interfaces work differently. Some hide menus and sidebars; others keep the current line or paragraph prominent, use typewriter scrolling, or offer a full-screen composition mode. The best option is the one whose behavior you can tolerate not only while drafting but also while editing, navigating, and checking notes.
- Full-screen composition: Useful if visible controls pull your attention away. Check how easily you can reveal navigation or formatting when you need it.
- Line or paragraph focus: Can help keep attention on a small span of text, but may feel restrictive during revision.
- Customizable interface: Lets you choose how sparse the screen is rather than accepting one fixed mode.
- Immersive extras: Sound or typing effects may appeal to some writers; make sure they can be disabled if they become another distraction.
WIRED’s 2024 comparison describes iA Writer’s active-line focus, Scrivener’s composition mode, and FocusWriter’s customizable interface. Treat these as features to evaluate in your own workflow, not proof that any one app improves concentration.

Choose a text format and export path you can live with
Markdown and plain text keep formatting cues close to the words and can make drafts easier to move between tools. Rich text avoids Markdown markers and feels more like a conventional word processor. Neither is universally better: consider how you draft, revise, share, and submit your work.
- Markdown-first workflow: iA Writer says Markdown documents can be copied as HTML or exported as PDF or Word. Its product page explains its approach to portable writing and export.
- Rich-text desktop drafting: WIRED describes FocusWriter as RTF-oriented, which may suit writers who prefer conventional formatting to Markdown.
- Long-manuscript output: Scrivener’s Compile feature offers multiple output formats. Check the export options in the edition you plan to use and confirm that the result matches your publisher, school, or collaborator’s requirements.
Before committing, confirm what the app saves as its native file or project format, whether it can export cleanly, and whether you can reopen your work elsewhere. A polished writing surface is less useful if moving or submitting the manuscript is awkward.

List the devices you actually use to write and revise. An app that works well on a desktop may not fit if you need to continue on a phone or tablet. Scrivener’s product page lists macOS, Windows, and iOS versions and says Dropbox is used for cross-platform sync. Sync arrangements and supported versions can change, so verify the current instructions for the editions you intend to use. WIRED’s comparison reports that Ulysses is Apple-only and that FocusWriter lacked mobile sync in the version it reviewed; check their current support before relying on those details.

Licensing also affects fit. A one-time desktop purchase, a separate mobile license, a bundle, and a subscription have different long-term costs. Scrivener’s product page displayed the following US prices when accessed on October 4, 2026; the publisher’s prices may change and may vary by region or version.

Test the workflow with a real piece of writing
A feature checklist cannot tell you whether an editor feels comfortable for hours of drafting. Try the same representative chapter or essay in your leading candidates, including the stages that come after the first draft.
- Draft: Write a few paragraphs in the app’s normal and focus modes.
- Revise: Navigate to an earlier passage, search the document, and make edits without losing your place.
- Organize: If your project is long, create or reorder sections and attach or consult research.
- Move and export: Export a sample to the format you need and open it in the tool or service where it will be used.
- Check another device: If cross-device work matters, verify the sync process and confirm that edits appear as expected.
Choose the least complicated option that handles your real workflow. If you mainly need a clear page and portable Markdown, try iA Writer. If you need to manage a large manuscript’s parts and compile its output, Scrivener is a more project-oriented candidate. If your preference is an Apple-centered subscription workflow, consider Ulysses; if you want a customizable, free desktop editor, investigate FocusWriter. Google Docs, Obsidian, Calmly Writer, and OmmWriter may fit specific collaboration, linked-note, or immersive-writing preferences.
