How to Put a RealMedia Ad on a Page with JavaScript

RealMedia/OAS ads use account-specific page and placement values. Get the current tag from ad operations, and treat older JavaScript examples as historical guidance.

To place a RealMedia (Open AdStream, or OAS) ad with JavaScript, use the complete tag generated for your publisher’s current ad-server account. The tag needs the page identifier and the placement name for each slot; historical examples show how those pieces fit together, but they do not establish a live endpoint or provide values you can safely copy.

What you need before adding the tag

Ask your ad operations team or ad-server administrator for the current JavaScript tag for the specific page and ad position. Confirm that the account still supports the supplied integration method and that the page identifier and placement names match the server configuration.

  • The current ad-server base URL and complete JavaScript tag.
  • The configured site-page identifier or path.
  • The placement name for every intended ad slot.
  • Any account-specific query values or cache-busting logic required by the tag.
  • Whether the supplied tag is synchronous or supports asynchronous loading.

Do not substitute a URL, page key, placement name, or query string from an old example. Those values are specific to a publisher’s configuration, and historical samples do not confirm that their endpoints still work.

How the historical OAS JavaScript pattern works

Legacy OAS examples follow a consistent general sequence: configure the server and page, list the placements, load a JavaScript response from an endpoint historically named adstream_mjx.ads or adstream_jx.ads, and call a rendering function for each placement. One MJX example uses calls such as OAS_RICH('x25') and OAS_RICH('x30'). These are illustrative historical names, not values to paste into a live page.

The detailed fields and sample code in Rob Flaherty’s MJX article were published on March 22, 2010; a third-party tracking reference also documents a historical OAS example tied to a 2013 campaign. Use them to understand the tag’s shape, not as current deployment instructions: Flaherty’s OAS MJX example and Kevel’s third-party tracking reference.

Insert the account-specific tag and verify each slot

  1. Request a page-specific tag. Tell the administrator which page will display the ad and identify each intended slot. Ask for the complete current tag, not just an endpoint or a fragment.
  2. Place the tag where the ad should appear. Follow the placement instructions supplied for that tag. Do not assume a historic function call or script path is valid for your account.
  3. Match each placement call to its configured slot. If the supplied implementation uses a function call per placement, verify the exact placement names with ad operations; the names in old examples are not universal.
  4. Test the page with the publisher’s approved setup. Check that each intended slot renders and that the ad-server administrator confirms the page and placement configuration. If a slot is blank, verify those values and the supplied endpoint with the administrator rather than guessing at replacements.

Understand the page-loading trade-off

The historical MJX implementation described by Flaherty uses document.write to insert the remote script and render ad calls. He notes that this can block other page components and constrain asynchronous loading. This warning applies to the legacy pattern he documents; it does not establish how every currently supported OAS tag behaves. Ask whether your account’s tag uses document.write and whether an asynchronous option is supported before changing its loading behavior.

What current documentation does—and does not—confirm

Drupal’s Open AdStream project page describes a GUI for managing 24/7 Real Media’s service and mentions DX and MJX tagging. The page, updated February 13, 2024, labels the project as maintenance-fixes-only and lists no supported stable releases: Drupal Open AdStream project. That is useful context for the age and support status of the integration, but it does not establish whether a particular publisher’s ad server or tag remains operational.

Google Ad Manager’s help lists 24/7 Real Media as a recognized vendor for JavaScript creative code in its macro-insertion feature. This is a limited compatibility detail, not confirmation that any individual RealMedia account or endpoint is active: Google Ad Manager: Insert macros into creative code.
