Neither is inherently better. Campus cafés can make it easier for students and staff to meet within the flow of university life; neighborhood coffee shops may bring together people who have no connection to the university. In either setting, community depends less on the label than on whether people can afford to come, feel welcome, find a comfortable place to stay, and return often enough to build relationships.
What makes a café a community space?
A café can host conversation, studying, relaxation, and informal gatherings. Those activities create opportunities for connection, but a room full of people is not automatically a community: social use alone does not establish lasting relationships, inclusion, or belonging. The useful question is whether a particular place makes repeated, low-friction interaction possible for the people it is meant to serve.

Researchers often use the idea of a “third place” for informal settings beyond home and work or study. It is a lens for considering social use, not a guarantee that a café will be welcoming or accessible. Seating, cost, atmosphere, and expectations about buying something all affect who can participate.
How campus cafés and neighborhood coffee shops differ
| Factor | Campus café | Neighborhood coffee shop | What to check locally |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it may bring together | People connected to the university, such as students and staff. | People from different institutions and age groups may share the space. | Who actually enters, feels welcome, and takes part in events? The reviewed studies do not directly measure a general difference in audience. |
| Routine and proximity | May be convenient between classes or other campus activities. | May fit a neighborhood route or daily routine. | Compare walking distance, opening hours, and alignment with people’s schedules. |
| Cost and purchase expectations | Food and drink prices, and rules about occupying seats, affect access. | The same constraints can apply; a commercial setting may expect customers to buy something. | Are there affordable options, and can people gather without making a purchase? |
| Comfort and capacity | Atmosphere and seating can help people stay; crowding can limit that. | Noise, seating, and peak-hour demand also shape whether people linger or talk. | Look for seating variety, space for groups, manageable noise, and room at busy times. |
| Interaction opportunities | Regular campus activities can create reasons to meet again. | Events or familiar faces can likewise encourage repeat visits. | Are gatherings recurring, and does the layout support conversation? |
This is a practical comparison framework, not a tested scoring tool. Physical proximity alone does not ensure that people can afford a venue or feel culturally included. Language, accessibility, staff interactions, and who is represented in programming also matter.

What studies of campus cafés and coffee shops find
Evidence from University of the Western Cape cafés
A 2025 mixed-methods study by Makhathini and Kanosvamhira examined selected cafés at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), using surveys, interviews, and observation. The authors describe cafés as places that can support student socialization and belonging, while also reporting crowding and limited seating. Among the study’s café-user respondents, 64.3% rated the cafés “Very accessible”; 33.0% chose “Somewhat accessible,” and 2.7% “not very accessible.” The authors caution that physical proximity does not capture affordability or cultural inclusion. Read the UWC study.
When asked about café choice, 69 of 112 respondents (61.6%) selected food and beverage quality, 46 (41.1%) selected proximity to classes, and 44 (39.3%) valued ambience and atmosphere. These figures describe respondents in that one campus study—not students generally. Because the study surveyed café users, it may not represent students who avoid the venues; it also had no control group, so it cannot show that cafés caused belonging.

Evidence from the University of Ljubljana
Žalac and Medved’s 2024 study of the Aškerc Street campus and surrounding urban area found that students and faculty used on- and off-campus third places to study, work, relax, socialize, and gather informally. In the surveyed student group, 52.1% visited a café at least weekly and 55.1% visited a restaurant at least weekly. Those results show recurring use in this particular campus setting, not that one type of venue creates stronger community.

In open-ended responses about where students preferred to get coffee, 29.3% named nearby cafés and 10.8% on-campus coffee options. The study categorized 334 responses, with 59.9% placed in a broad “Other” category, so these figures are not a clean head-to-head preference comparison. The authors also call for flexible, accessible gathering options, including non-commercial places where people are not expected to buy something. Read the Ljubljana study.

What broader coffee-shop research adds
A 2023 study of 722 students at the University of California, Irvine, examined the psychological benefits of third places. It reports that cafés and coffee shops can offer benefits similar to urban parks, and that a large-chain coffee shop was among the pleasant places students preferred for rest. This supports the idea that coffee shops can be valued leisure settings for some students, but it does not test community formation or compare neighborhood shops with campus cafés. View the study record.
A 2018 qualitative case study observed a Starbucks on the Universitas Indonesia campus. Lukito and Xenia describe a modern café as a potentially comfortable, neutral setting for interaction, including conversation alongside use of electronic devices. It is one café case, not evidence that all chain cafés or campus cafés work the same way. View the Universitas Indonesia research record.

Which venue is the better choice?
Choose a campus café when
- The community you want to support is primarily students, faculty, or staff.
- The café is close to classes or other regular campus activities, making repeat visits practical.
- Its prices, seating, and atmosphere allow a broad range of people to use it.
- Recurring gatherings or everyday encounters give people a reason to meet again.
Choose a neighborhood coffee shop when
- You want a potential meeting place that is not defined by university membership.
- Its location and hours work for the schedules of nearby residents and other regular visitors.
- Its costs, welcome, and physical setup make it usable by the people you hope to bring together.
- It offers ways for people to return and interact, rather than only passing through.
These are conditional choices, not proven advantages of either venue type. The studies examined different populations and outcomes, and none directly compared matched campus cafés and neighborhood coffee shops.
How to tell whether a café is genuinely welcoming
- Check practical access: note the route, hours, prices, and whether sitting without buying is permitted.
- Look beyond the doorway: consider accessibility, cultural cues, language, staff interactions, and who appears in events or programming.
- Observe how the space works: look at noise, seating variety, group space, and crowding at the times people would actually meet.
- Look for repeat opportunities: regular gatherings and familiar faces create more chances for interaction than décor alone.
- Ask who is missing: people who do not use a café may face barriers that regular customers do not notice.
A venue that wants to support community can pair comfortable, flexible seating with recurring activities and alternatives for people who cannot or do not want to spend money. That makes participation less dependent on having a purchase in hand.
