On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Two-Factor Authentication, tap Add Trusted Phone Number, then follow the prompts to verify the number. Apple ID is now called Apple Account; the trusted-number setting adds a way to receive sign-in verification codes, rather than changing the account’s sign-in name.
What a trusted phone number does
A trusted phone number is a number on file that can receive verification codes for Apple Account two-factor authentication. You use a code along with your password when signing in on a new device or browser. If a trusted device is available, it may display the code instead.

Apple requires at least one trusted number for two-factor authentication. If you have more than one number, Apple recommends considering one that is not associated with your iPhone, so losing access to that phone does not also remove your only route to a code. The number you add must be one you can access to receive messages or calls with verification codes.

The steps below change the two-factor authentication options under account security.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Add the number on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Sign-In & Security, then Two-Factor Authentication.
- Below the listed devices and phone numbers, tap Add Trusted Phone Number.
- Enter the number and follow the on-screen verification steps. Tap Done when finished.
Apple’s interface labels or layout may vary slightly by software release. If you do not see the exact wording, look under your account name for the two-factor authentication settings.
Use a Mac or the web instead
| Where you are | Path | Setting area |
|---|---|---|
| Mac | Apple menu > System Settings > your name > Sign-In & Security > Two-Factor Authentication | Scroll down and click Add Trusted Phone Number. |
| Web browser | Sign in at account.apple.com > Sign-In and Security > Account Security | Use Trusted Phone Number to add or remove numbers. |
These routes change the same account-security setting. If a label differs slightly on your device, look for the two-factor authentication area on an Apple device or Account Security on the web.

When you need a verification code
A trusted number does not receive every sign-in code automatically. If you are setting up a new device and cannot use a trusted device, select Didn’t get a verification code? on the code screen, then choose a trusted number to receive one.

You have permanently lost access
Start Apple’s account-recovery process from the sign-in flow. On the verification-code screen, choose Didn’t Get a Code? or Can’t get to your devices?, then select Can’t use [phone number] and follow the instructions. Recovery can take a few days or longer depending on the information available to verify your identity; Apple says contacting support cannot speed it up.

If you enabled an Apple Account recovery key, keep it available: Apple may ask for it when you make certain account changes, including adding a trusted phone number. A recovery key also turns off Apple’s standard account-recovery process, and losing it can permanently lock you out.

An account recovery contact is a separate option: a trusted person can provide a recovery code if you are locked out. Apple does not require a recovery contact to add a trusted phone number.
