Agent Wall is an open-source proxy that sits between an MCP client and an MCP server. It inspects tool calls before they reach the server and can scan tool responses before they return to the client. Its maintainers document YAML rules for allowing, denying, or prompting on calls, plus response actions to pass, redact, or block matched content. Those are documented mechanisms—not proof of a security guarantee or independent validation.
What Agent Wall does in an MCP connection
Model Context Protocol (MCP) clients use servers to expose tools. Agent Wall inserts itself into that connection as a proxy: instead of launching the server directly, the client launches Agent Wall, which then starts the original server and mediates the traffic. The project describes inspection of both inbound tools/call requests and responses to tracked tool calls. Agent Wall’s repository and its How It Works guide document the design.

For a call, the configured outcome can be to forward it, deny it with an error, or request human approval. The guide says protocol messages that are not tool calls pass through untouched. On the return path, response scanning can pass the response through, redact matched content, or return an error rather than send the sensitive-looking content to the client.
What the documented checks cover
The repository describes a sequence of checks for tool calls. These include an emergency kill switch, pattern-based prompt-injection detection, egress checks for private addresses, SSRF vectors and metadata endpoints, YAML policy evaluation, and detection of suspicious multi-step call patterns. It also documents first-match-wins rules, glob matching, and rate limiting.

Response checks use built-in and custom patterns, with a configurable response-size limit. The README gives examples of patterns for secrets and personally identifiable information (PII); it describes PII detection as opt-in. A matched response can be passed, redacted, or blocked according to configuration.
The project also lists audit logging, policy validation and hot reload, and a real-time dashboard. These are maintainer-documented features. The available project materials do not establish that Agent Wall catches every prompt injection or exfiltration path, isolates tools in a sandbox, or has passed an independent security audit.
How to add it to an MCP server command
The documented setup is to install the CLI, initialize a policy, and wrap the command that starts the MCP server. Agent Wall’s repository gives this example flow:

Install the package globally with
npm install -g agent-wall. -
Create a starter policy with
agent-wall init. -
Replace the MCP server’s launch command with the wrapper pattern
agent-wall wrap -- <original-command>, keeping the original server command and its arguments after--. -
Review and edit the generated YAML policy, then use the CLI’s policy validation and testing commands before relying on the configuration.

For an MCP client configuration, the essential change is to make Agent Wall the server command and pass the original server command to it after --. The repository names Claude Code, Cursor, Claude Desktop, VS Code, and Windsurf as compatible clients. The guide describes the proxy as operating over MCP JSON-RPC messages on stdio and claims compatibility with servers using that transport. These are project claims; they are not independently tested here.
How YAML policies shape decisions
The documented policy format combines a default action, a global call rate limit, security settings, response-scanning options, and ordered rules. Because the project specifies first-match-wins behavior, rule order matters: a broad rule placed earlier can decide a request before a narrower rule is reached.
Examples in the README show rules that block reads from SSH-key paths, deny a curl-like shell command, prompt for shell execution, and allow selected file reads. Treat such examples as starting points, not a complete policy for your environment. Match the rules to the tools and data available to your agent, and check that the policy’s default action and rule ordering produce the behavior you intend.

A proxy can provide a central place to inspect and apply policies to traffic that actually passes through it. That makes Agent Wall relevant when you want configurable controls at the MCP client–server boundary, including approval prompts and response scanning. It is not, on the evidence in the project materials, a replacement for restricting permissions on the server, isolating risky execution, protecting credentials, or reviewing tool behavior.
