Yes—AirPods can work as a microphone for some recordings, but whether you can select them depends on the AirPods model, app, operating-system version, and region. Apple specifically documents AirPods microphone support in certain iPhone and iPad camera apps; support is not guaranteed in every audio recorder. If you mean capturing music that is playing through AirPods, that is different: the documented features capture live sound through a microphone, not the digital audio of a streaming track.
What do you mean by recording a song?
There are two different tasks behind this question:

- Recording live sound: singing, speaking, or playing an instrument into a microphone. AirPods may serve as the input in supported configurations.
- Capturing music playback: saving or copying a track that is playing through AirPods. The Apple documentation cited here does not establish a way to do that with AirPods.
The rest of this guide covers live recording. Listening to a song through AirPods does not itself turn the earbuds into a way to capture that song’s digital audio.

Can AirPods record video as a microphone?
Yes, on supported devices and in supported camera apps. Apple says, “You can use your AirPods as a microphone—like a lapel mic—with supported camera apps.” Its AirPods guide lists AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2 for this feature. It requires iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later and is unavailable in some countries and regions, including the EU. Select AirPods as the camera input
- Connect the AirPods to the iPhone or iPad.
- Open a supported camera app and choose Video mode.
- Open Camera Controls, choose Input, and select the AirPods if they appear. Apple also documents an input option under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Input where available.
- Choose an available microphone mode—Automatic, Standard, Voice Isolation, or Wide Spectrum—if the app and device offer those controls.
AirPods can also be configured as a camera remote in supported setups; pressing the stem or Digital Crown can start or stop video. That remote function is separate from selecting the microphone input.
Can I use AirPods to record vocals or instruments in an audio app?
Possibly, but do not assume every model will appear as an input in every app. Apple’s Voice Memos guide supports recording through the iPhone’s built-in microphone, a supported headset, or an external microphone. It does not promise universal AirPods routing for every setup. Check the input source shown in Voice Memos on your device. Apple’s GarageBand for iPhone Audio Recorder can capture voice, instruments, or other sounds using the iPhone microphone, and it supports a connected external microphone. The cited guide does not guarantee that AirPods will be selectable in every GarageBand setup, so check the input route available on your device. Voice Memos stereo is not the same as AirPods stereo
Voice Memos offers mono, stereo, and Spatial Audio options on supported iPhone models. Apple describes stereo capture using multiple microphones on the iPhone; it also documents an external stereo microphone or compatible audio interface as an option. Those iPhone microphone modes should not be mistaken for a claim that AirPods record stereo audio.

How does Bluetooth recording quality affect the result?
Bluetooth recording quality is conditional, not a universal specification for AirPods. Apple’s developer documentation describes a high-quality Bluetooth recording option that can provide full-bandwidth audio when the Bluetooth route supports it, including certain AirPods models. The app must configure its recording session to opt in; a route that does not support the option may fall back to another mode. This does not establish that AirPods match a dedicated vocal microphone or guarantee a particular sound quality. Details are in Apple’s Bluetooth high-quality recording documentation.

Which recording setup should I use?

What to check if AirPods do not appear as an input
- Confirm the earbuds are connected to the device, not merely nearby.
- For camera recording, verify the AirPods model, supported camera app, operating-system requirement, region, and input selection.
- For Voice Memos or GarageBand, check the input source offered by that app on your specific device. Apple’s camera support does not imply that every audio app supports the same route.
- If reliable input selection or input-level adjustment is essential, use an external microphone or compatible audio interface supported by the app.
