To keep a list in one Excel cell, edit the cell, insert a line break between items, and type a bullet or number at the start of each line. Use Alt+Enter on Windows or Control+Option+Return on Mac, then turn on Home > Wrap Text so the lines display inside the cell.
Make a bulleted or numbered list in one cell
- Select the cell and enter editing mode by double-clicking it or pressing F2.
- Type the first item. For a bulleted list, put a bullet character (
•) at its start. For a numbered list, type a label such as1.. - Move the insertion point to the end of that item and insert a line break: press Alt+Enter in Excel for Windows or Control+Option+Return in Excel for Mac. Microsoft documents those shortcuts in its instructions for starting a new line inside a cell.
- Type the next bullet or number and repeat for each item.
- Select the cell and choose Home > Wrap Text. Increase the row height or use AutoFit Row Height if any lines are hidden.
Add a bullet character
You can type or paste the bullet character • at the start of each line. Microsoft also describes inserting one through Insert > Symbol, using character code 2022. Its worksheet guidance says Alt+7 can insert a bullet when a numeric keypad is available, though the displayed symbol can vary with the font. If you copy a list from another app, paste it while the target cell is being edited. Pasting into a selected cell without entering edit mode may put each line into a separate cell, so check the result.
Choose manual entry or a formula

For formula-generated lists, include bullet or number characters in the text you join if you want them to appear. For a hand-entered list, manual line breaks are usually the simpler option.

Fix display problems
- The list appears on one line: Select the cell and enable Home > Wrap Text.
- Some lines are cut off: Use AutoFit Row Height or increase the row height. Microsoft’s Wrap Text guidance notes that a fixed row height or merged cells can prevent all wrapped text from showing.
- The bullet is missing or looks different: Try a font that supports the character or insert it through Insert > Symbol.
Shortcuts and mobile editing
Microsoft’s line-break guidance covers Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, Excel 2016, and Excel for iPad, iPhone, and Android. On mobile, its instructions describe editing the cell, long-pressing where the break belongs, and choosing New Line. Exact controls can vary by device and version, so use the instructions for your Excel edition on Microsoft’s line-break support page.
In a worksheet cell, bullets and numbers are characters you enter on each line; the cited worksheet guidance does not describe a dedicated automatic numbered-list control for cells. For full word-processing list controls, Microsoft notes that you can apply bullets and numbering in a text box or shape instead.
