A Tool Round-Trip Is Not a Load Test: What Each Measurement Proves

A tool-call benchmark measures an interaction under specific conditions. A load test shows how the system responds to defined traffic as it ramps and is sustained.

No. A tool-call round-trip measures the time taken by a particular interaction under the conditions observed; it does not show whether a system can handle production traffic. To assess capacity, test a defined, realistic traffic pattern as load increases and is sustained, while measuring latency, throughput, errors, and relevant system behavior.

What does a tool round-trip measurement tell you?

It answers a narrow question: how long did this interaction take under these conditions? The measured boundary matters. A total invocation time may include network or SDK time without showing how much time was spent in the agent, tool, or backend.

A single call—or a small number of calls—is a latency sample, not proof of capacity. It cannot establish how the system behaves when many users or agents make requests concurrently, whether queues grow, or whether performance remains stable over time.

How is a load test different?

A load test defines traffic and observes the system as that traffic increases and remains at a target level. Its results apply to the workload, environment, and duration actually tested.

Aspect Round-trip or short runtime benchmark Load test
Main question How long did an invocation take? How does the system behave under defined traffic?
Workload One or a small number of calls, sometimes with modest concurrency Representative concurrent users or requests and a defined traffic profile
Time shape Often brief and warmed up Ramp toward a target, sustained target load, and optionally ramp-down or longer endurance
Metrics Call latency; possibly throughput and cost Latency under load, throughput, errors, and relevant resource or stability signals
Limits May hide bottlenecks inside an aggregate duration and omit endurance or resource behavior Does not establish behavior outside the tested workload, environment, and duration

The measurements complement each other. A round-trip can help investigate a performance change, but it cannot substitute for a load test.

How do you load test an AI agent that uses tools?

  1. Define the question. Decide whether you are checking a latency regression, expected-load capacity, peak behavior, or long-duration stability; each calls for a workload suited to that question.
  2. Set a representative workload. Derive expected concurrency and throughput from production observations or an explicit business estimate. Include realistic user or agent behavior and, where they are part of the real path, the relevant tool and backend dependencies—not just a repeated isolated tool operation.
  3. Ramp toward the target and sustain it. A gradual ramp can reveal degradation as load increases. Holding the target helps assess performance and stability at that level. A brief smoke benchmark does not assess endurance.
  4. Measure behavior throughout the test. Track response-time distributions, throughput, and errors during both ramp and sustained load. Observe resource and stability signals relevant to the system architecture.
  5. Trace the interaction path. Use traces to inspect the request across agent, tool, and backend stages and see where elapsed time accumulates. OpenTelemetry describes traces as a way to follow a request across components; tracing helps explain behavior but does not establish capacity on its own. OpenTelemetry’s traces documentation.
  6. Report the scope. State the environment, workload, concurrency, duration, measured boundary, and omissions alongside results. This prevents a round-trip or test result from being mistaken for a system-wide capacity claim.

Grafana Labs describes average-load testing as modeling typical production concurrency and throughput, ramping toward a target, and holding that load to assess performance and degradation. Its guidance distinguishes above-average conditions as a stress-testing question. Grafana Labs’ average-load testing guide.

When should you run a stress or soak test?

Stress testing

Use a stress test when you want to explore behavior above expected load. It asks a different question from an average-load test, which models typical conditions. Do not treat success at expected load as evidence of how the service behaves beyond it.

Soak or endurance testing

Use a longer sustained test when the question is whether the system remains stable over time. A short benchmark can report latency, throughput, or cost and still omit sustained-load endurance, process-level memory pressure, cold starts, or multi-region variation. AgentEval’s performance benchmark documentation explicitly describes such scope limits and characterizes the tool as runtime observability, not a replacement for load testing or capacity planning. Its beta status and any thresholds it documents are specific to that tool, not universal standards. AgentEval performance benchmark documentation.

What should you measure besides tool-call latency?

  • Throughput: how many requests the system handles under the defined traffic profile.
  • Errors: whether failures increase as load ramps or remains at the target.
  • Latency distributions: how response times change under load, rather than relying on one aggregate duration.
  • Relevant resource and stability signals: select these for the architecture and the question being tested.
  • Stage-level timing: trace the request through agent, tool, and backend components to locate where time accumulates.

There is no universally correct workload, test duration, or latency percentile threshold established by these sources. Choose and document them for the production behavior and decision you need to evaluate.
