Share as little sensitive information as possible, and check the aggregator’s own data practices before you submit prompts or files. An aggregator can add another organization—and another set of terms—to the path your content travels. A privacy or training setting at the underlying model provider does not establish what the aggregator does with its own copies.
Can an AI aggregator see your prompts?
Assume the service receiving your prompt can process it. Depending on how an aggregator is built, your prompt or file may also be sent to a separate model provider or other subprocessors. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) notes that model-as-a-service providers can receive sensitive personal data and confidential business information through model interfaces and APIs. Its guidance is a reason to check the relevant services’ terms—not evidence that every aggregator stores or trains on user content. FTC staff guidance, January 2024.

Review the aggregator’s privacy notice and terms, and check the downstream provider’s applicable terms where available. Find out which organization receives each request, what information it receives, and whether the aggregator’s settings or contract affect that flow. A setting you change directly with a model provider may not govern copies held by the aggregator.
How can you reduce what you expose?
The most dependable low-friction step is to leave unnecessary sensitive information out. The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) recommends educating users to provide only essential information, remove unnecessary identifiers, and consider anonymized or pseudonymized alternatives where appropriate. - Remove names, addresses, account numbers, credentials, customer records, and other identifiers unless they are genuinely needed.
- Use a synthetic or redacted example when it can answer the same question as a real case.
- Do not upload unpublished work or confidential company material unless the service is approved for that use.
- For work information, use an organization-approved service and confirm its permitted uses with your privacy or security owner.
What should you check in an AI aggregator’s privacy policy?
Read the current notice and terms, rather than relying on a feature label or a general claim such as “private.” Look for concrete details about data categories, purposes, retention, sharing, review, and the organizations involved. The EDPB recommends addressing retention, processing locations, safeguards for transfers, and data minimization when assessing providers.
- Recipients: Which model providers and other subprocessors receive prompts, files, or outputs?
- Purpose and training: Can input or output content be used for model training, improvement, analytics, or other purposes? Does an opt-out cover the aggregator, its providers, or both?
- Retention and deletion: How long are inputs and outputs stored? What does deletion remove, and can backups, abuse monitoring, or legal obligations affect how long data remains?
- Human review: Can people review content, for example for support or abuse monitoring, and under what conditions?
- Location and transfers: Where is data processed, and what safeguards apply when it is transferred internationally?
- Contract and controls: For organizational use, what retention configuration, access protections, contractual commitments, and incident procedures apply?
When comparing services, assess each against the same questions. If a policy does not answer an important question, ask the provider; do not treat missing detail as proof of a particular practice.

Do AI aggregators use your chats to train models?
There is no basis here for a blanket yes or no: practices and settings vary by service. Check whether the aggregator uses content for its own model improvement and whether it passes content to a provider whose terms allow a separate use. An opt-out at one service is not proof that another organization’s copy is excluded.
The FTC says companies should clearly disclose other uses of consumer data and honor their privacy commitments. FTC staff also warned that quietly changing terms to allow broader sharing or AI training may be unfair or deceptive, depending on the circumstances. How do you stop an AI service from saving your prompts?
First identify which service’s saving you want to control. The aggregator may retain a copy even when a model provider offers a separate setting. Check the aggregator’s account controls and terms, then ask how deletion works and whether retention for backups, abuse monitoring, or legal obligations is affected. The EDPB recommends agreeing retention periods with a provider; a delete button alone may not explain what happens to every copy.
As one service-specific example, OpenAI’s ChatGPT documentation says eligible users can turn off “Improve the model for everyone”; new conversations then are not used to train OpenAI models, but may remain in chat history. ChatGPT Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while temporary, do not appear in history or create memories, and may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Availability depends on account or workspace configuration. These statements describe ChatGPT, not an unrelated aggregator or every provider it may use. OpenAI’s Temporary Chat documentation also says information sent to a third party through a GPT action is governed by that recipient’s privacy policy, and the recipient may retain it longer than 30 days or use it for other purposes. That example illustrates why a downstream recipient’s own terms matter; it does not establish retention practices for other services.

A feature name or privacy-enhancing technology claim is not, by itself, evidence of what happens to your content in practice. The FTC notes that implementation can present challenges and that auditing internal corporate behavior has limits. Look for clear, specific explanations of scope and supporting evidence; a claim about one part of a service does not necessarily cover its providers or every data path. Do not assume a VPN, private-browsing window, or account-level training toggle prevents the service receiving a prompt from retaining or using it. Those measures do not answer the provider-specific questions above.
What should organizations verify before approving an aggregator?
For business use, assess the service as a chain of processors rather than just the app employees see. Confirm which model providers and subprocessors receive data, applicable contract terms, retention configuration, access controls, processing locations, transfer safeguards, and the incident process. The EDPB recommends verifying relevant provider and transfer details and making necessary contractual arrangements. Involve the organization’s privacy or security owner before confidential or personal data is submitted.
Recheck notices and settings after material changes. In its February 2024 guidance, the FTC cautioned against quietly broadening data use or sharing through retroactive terms changes without clear notice and consent where required. Applicable legal duties depend on jurisdiction and circumstances.
