As of October 3, 2026, Tyler Adams is captain of the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT). Head coach Mauricio Pochettino announced his appointment on October 2, ahead of the USA–Mexico match. The captain wears an identifying armband and has responsibility for team behaviour under the Laws of the Game, but receives no special status or privileges. In practice, U.S. Soccer says Adams has helped set camp standards and bring new players together with World Cup veterans.

The captain is identified on the field by an armband. The 2025/26 Laws of the Game require a team captain to wear one, but do not give the captain special authority over the referee or match decisions. The Laws say the captain has “no special status or privileges,” while assigning a degree of responsibility for the behaviour of the team. See the 2025/26 Laws of the Game changes.

What does leadership involve for Adams?
Leadership can extend beyond the limited formal match role. U.S. Soccer reported that Adams helped set the tone and standards in camp as newcomers joined World Cup veterans. Adams said the armband would not change who he is or what leadership means to him, and that he would try to lead the group toward a winning culture and continue building the team. Those are Adams’s stated aims and U.S. Soccer’s account of his role, not additional duties laid down by the Laws.

How did Adams become captain?
Tim Ream captained the USMNT through the 2026 World Cup. He announced his retirement from international soccer shortly before Adams’s appointment. U.S. Soccer reported that Ream made 86 appearances for the national team and captained Pochettino’s side 23 times. These figures describe Ream’s record as reported by the federation in 2026; they are not a measure of either player’s effectiveness.
U.S. Soccer also described Adams as the youngest captain at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, aged 23 years and 288 days, and the youngest American captain since Walter Bahr in 1950.
