In the United States, start with the FDA for most foods; use the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) for meat, poultry, and processed egg products. A search with no match does not prove a snack is safe: the FDA says its public recall page does not include every recall.
Is this snack recalled? Follow these steps
- Identify which agency regulates it. Most packaged snacks fall under the FDA. For snacks containing meat, poultry, or processed egg products, check USDA FSIS recalls. The FDA also directs consumers to its Enforcement Report for classified recalls. USDA FSIS recalls
- Search by both product and company. On the FDA’s Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts page, search the snack’s product or brand name and the recalling company name; use available filters to narrow results. If the result is unclear, check the company’s recall notice as well.
- Open the notice and match the package. Check the product name, package type and size, UPC, lot or product code, sell-by or use-by date, label or package image, and stated distribution area or stores. A familiar brand name alone is not enough to establish that your item is included.
- Act on a confirmed match. Do not eat or share the snack. Follow the notice’s instructions for returning or disposing of it; FDA says recalled food may often be returned to the store where it was bought. If the notice does not resolve an important question about your package, contact the company.
What to do if you already handled or ate the snack
- If the product contacted food-storage or preparation surfaces, wash and sanitize those surfaces as FDA recommends.
- If you develop symptoms after eating it, contact a health-care provider.
- Do not give the recalled food to someone else. If it cannot be returned, follow the notice’s disposal instructions and dispose of it properly.
FDA’s consumer guidance is to read and follow the recall notice, dispose of contaminated food if it cannot be returned, avoid giving it to others, clean affected surfaces, and seek medical advice for symptoms. Its general recall advice is: “If you think you have a recalled product, don’t use it. Check the instructions and take action!” (FDA 101: Product Recalls).

What a missing result—or a terminated status—means
No result is not an all-clear
The FDA says not all recalls appear on its public-warning listing. A product may also be older than the page’s display period. If an initial search finds nothing, check the company’s notice and the FDA Enforcement Report where relevant; do not treat an empty search as proof that the snack is safe.
Check older notices in the archive
FDA says its public recall content remains available for three years before it is archived. For an older product, search the FDA Recall Archive by product or company name and year. The current listing changes over time, so recheck it when making a decision.

Terminated describes the recall process
A “terminated” status means FDA has determined that reasonable efforts were made to remove or correct the product and that proper disposition was made. It describes the status of the recall process; it does not tell you whether your particular package matches the notice. Compare its identifiers and follow the notice’s consumer instructions.

Get future recall notices from the FDA
The FDA offers a free subscription option for daily or weekly notices. It can help you see new alerts, but a notice still needs to be matched against the product and package you have.
