To limit who can see future posts, turn on Protect your posts; to make your account harder to discover, separately switch off email and phone discoverability. Neither change makes content confidential: followers can copy or capture posts, and information shared before a setting change may persist.
Choose who can see your posts
X calls private posts protected posts. The setting restricts their audience to your followers and makes new follow requests reviewable; it does not conceal posts from followers you already have. If your priority is followers-only visibility, use this path:

- Open Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy and safety, then Audience and tagging.
- Turn on Protect your posts.
Labels or layout may differ slightly by app or web version; look for the equivalent audience control if the path has changed. Existing followers remain followers unless you block them. X explains how to protect and unprotect posts in its post protection guide.
Understand what protected posts do—and do not—protect
Public posts can be seen by anyone, including people without an X account. Protected posts are visible to your followers; X says they do not appear in third-party search engines and can be searched on X only by you and your followers. The repost controls are unavailable for protected posts, but that does not prevent recipients from copying text, capturing an image, or sharing a link or media. X warns: “Your followers may still capture images of your posts and share them.” Authorized third-party applications may also be able to access protected posts. Treat protection as audience control, not secrecy. See X’s explanation of public and protected posts.

When you protect an account, older posts stop appearing publicly on X and in public X search. That cannot undo anything already seen or copied, or control copies elsewhere. If you later turn protection off, previously protected posts become public. Pending follow requests are not automatically accepted when you unprotect posts, so review them before making posts public.
Limit discovery through your email and phone number
Post visibility and account discoverability are separate settings. In Privacy and safety, open Discoverability and contacts and review the individual options for letting people find you by email address and phone number. Turn off either or both if you do not want those details used to match your account to others.

X says these details are not publicly displayed simply because discoverability is enabled. The controls govern matching and suggestions. If you disable discoverability, X says it will not use address-book contacts you uploaded to suggest your account to other people. See X’s email and phone discoverability settings.

Review personalization and data controls
Under Privacy and safety, open Personalization and data to review the available controls, including the master setting. X describes these options as controls over personalization and sharing non-public information with certain business partners. The signed-in preferences apply across devices when you use the same account; logged-out preferences apply only to the browser you are using while logged out.

Turning off the master setting should not be treated as a promise that all data collection or processing stops, or that information previously shared is recalled. X’s description of the controls is on its Personalization and data settings page.
Check location before you post
Post location is off by default and requires opting in. You can attach a place label to a post; after enabling location posting, the next post automatically includes a general location label, so check the composition screen each time. The in-app camera has a separate precise-location option: if enabled, a photo or video post may contain the device’s latitude and longitude as well as the selected place label. Those coordinates can be more specific than the visible label.

- Check the location indicator on each post before publishing.
- Review the in-app camera’s precise-location option if you post photos or videos.
- Check device or browser location permissions and any third-party apps used to post.
- If needed, use X’s control for deleting past location data displayed in posts.

Photo-tagging controls let you choose whether anyone, friends, or no one can tag your account, according to X’s experience controls. Review them in Privacy and safety if tags could expose unwanted associations or draw attention to your account.

Blocking is an interaction control, not a way to hide public posts: if your account remains public, its posts are still publicly visible. X’s experience controls guide covers blocking and tagging options.
Secure the account that holds your privacy settings
Use a strong password that you do not reuse on other sites, and enable two-factor authentication (2FA). X documents authentication-app codes and physical security keys as secondary login methods. A security key is an option, not a required brand or model; choose a method you can keep available so you do not lose account access if a device is lost.
SMS 2FA support for non-Premium subscribers ended on 20 March 2023. X says Premium SMS availability varies by country and carrier, so check the methods currently shown in your account rather than relying on older instructions. Consult X’s 2FA guide and account security tips.

X’s general advice is: “Don’t post information you consider to be private, and be thoughtful about when you want to publicly share your location.” Its personal-information guidance is a useful reminder that settings cannot make a recipient forget or erase what they have already received. X also cannot remove content from websites other than X.com; for an external copy, contact the site or operator hosting it.
