Protect a digital game library before something goes wrong: secure every store account and its email with two-factor authentication and unique passwords, save the oldest proof of purchase, download lawful offline installers and patches, export saves, and keep at least two local copies. These measures preserve what can be preserved. They cannot recreate a publisher server, an online economy, or an entitlement check that still requires a functioning account.
What you can—and cannot—preserve
A digital purchase is usually permission to access software under a platform’s contract, not ownership of a permanent copy. A 2025 Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) inquiry found that standard-form terms for Steam, Epic Games Store and PlayStation Network generally describe a revocable licence to access and play. In Australian survey fieldwork conducted in October and November 2024, 56% of game players did not know that buying a game might not give them ownership; 72% considered that arrangement quite or very unfair, while 10% considered it quite or very fair.

That legal and technical distinction explains why a library needs a continuity plan. You can preserve installers, patches, saves, receipts and recovery evidence. You cannot guarantee that a provider will continue authenticating an account, maintain a launcher, operate matchmaking, or keep a proprietary online service available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Usually preservable: a lawfully downloaded installer, offline patch, configuration files, screenshots, save data, purchase receipts and account-recovery records.
- Conditionally preservable: a game that starts only after a launcher check, uses a third-party account, or periodically validates a licence.
- Not reproducible by a local backup: matchmaking, server-side progression, cloud economies, hosted leaderboards and any other service that runs on the publisher’s infrastructure.
Think of preservation as a set of layers. The first layer is your identity and account. The second is evidence that you acquired the game lawfully. The third is the software and saves stored on your devices. The final layer is the publisher’s infrastructure, which you can document but cannot control. A failure in any layer can change what “keeping the game” means.

Secure the account that controls your library
Use strong, unique credentials and two-factor authentication
Enable the store’s two-factor feature (Steam calls its system Steam Guard) and use a password that is unique to that store. Protect the email address attached to the account with its own unique password and two-factor authentication. The email account is often the recovery route; losing it can be as damaging as losing the store login.
Prefer an authenticator app or hardware security key when the service supports it. Keep recovery codes in an encrypted password manager or another secure offline record. Do not store them only inside the account you are trying to recover. If a service lets you register a phone number, secondary email or trusted device, review those options periodically and remove methods you no longer control.
Defeat the common takeover routes
- Open the store by typing its address or using a saved bookmark instead of following an unexpected message link.
- Never give a one-time code, password or recovery code to someone claiming to be support.
- Do not share accounts, buy an account, use an account-creation service, or activate a key from an untrusted seller. Those activities can make ownership disputes harder to resolve.
- Keep your operating system, browser and security software current, and scan a computer if you suspect malware.
- Use a separate browser profile or device for account recovery when practical, and avoid signing in on shared computers.
If you suspect compromise
- From a known-clean device, change the store password and the password for the linked email account.
- Use the account’s “sign out everywhere” or equivalent control, then review the list of authorized devices and revoke anything unfamiliar.
- Check the email account for forwarding rules, changed recovery addresses and unfamiliar sessions.
- Scan the computer that may have been compromised before signing in again. A password changed on an infected machine can be stolen immediately.
- Contact the store’s official recovery channel and provide your preserved purchase evidence.
Do not open a second account to “start over” while a recovery case is pending if doing so could confuse which account owns the purchases. Keep copies of support correspondence and case numbers in your recovery record.

Build an ownership and recovery record
Recovery teams may ask for the oldest proof that you controlled an account. Create a private record before you need it, and update it whenever you make a significant purchase.
| Record | What to retain | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Earliest account evidence | Original account email, first transaction email and the oldest receipt you can find | Older evidence can establish that you are the original account holder |
| Transaction details | Order numbers, transaction IDs, dates, amounts, currency and payment method details (redacted where appropriate) | Support can match a disputed account to a payment history |
| Product evidence | Activation keys, bundle names, platform, edition and screenshots of the library | Shows which entitlement you are trying to recover |
| Account structure | Linked email addresses, console accounts, third-party logins and family-sharing relationships | Prevents you from overlooking a dependency during recovery |
Store this information in an encrypted vault and in a second offline copy. Do not publish keys or receipts in a public forum. Redact full payment-card numbers and other information that a support agent does not need.
Make the record usable during an outage
Use a plain-text or PDF index that can be opened without the store application. For each title, list the storefront, edition, purchase date, transaction ID, installer filename, patch version, save location and any required account or server. Note whether the game starts offline after first activation. Include the email addresses and third-party identities involved, but never put passwords or one-time codes in the index.
Save screenshots of your library and important in-game entitlements as supplementary evidence. Screenshots do not replace receipts, but they can show the edition, downloadable content or account name when a storefront is unavailable. Keep the record current after refunds, family-sharing changes, account-email changes and hardware transfers.

Delisting removes a title from new sale. It does not automatically delete a copy that you already downloaded, but access can still fail if the title needs a publisher server, launcher authentication or an online entitlement check. A previously installed copy can also become unusable after a required service is retired or a platform changes its authentication system.

The European Commission wrote in 2026 that modern video games often rely on publishers’ servers and that ending server support can make games partially or entirely unplayable. In the European Union, providers must disclose the duration and termination conditions of digital-content contracts before signup. Digital-content rules can provide remedies, potentially including a proportionate refund when content does not conform to the contract. Those rights depend on jurisdiction and the facts of the transaction; they are not a universal promise that every delisted game remains playable.
Check a title’s dependency chain
- Local executable: starts entirely from files on your device.
- Launcher dependency: requires a separate client to install, update or authenticate.
- Account dependency: checks a store or publisher account even for single-player play.
- Service dependency: requires matchmaking, a server-hosted profile, cloud inventory or another live endpoint.
Record these dependencies when you install the game. A note such as “offline single-player works after first activation” is more useful than assuming every installed title will remain playable. Test after a normal restart, after signing out of the launcher and with the network disconnected. A game that loads from an already-running session is not necessarily an offline game.
Download and preserve lawful offline files
Use the availability window
- Download the installer or complete game files while the title is still offered.
- Apply the latest patch that you can lawfully obtain, then retain both the installer and the patch rather than keeping only the updated directory.
- Launch the game with the network disconnected to test whether the promised offline mode actually works. Follow any documented first-run activation requirement before going offline.
- Export saves using the game’s own menu or by copying the documented save directory. Keep separate copies for each profile.
- Save license keys, purchase receipts, required redistributables and a text file listing the operating-system version and graphics settings used.
Keep the original installer even after applying a patch. It establishes what you acquired and may be needed to reinstall an older compatible build. Keep the patch separately when the platform provides it as a distinct download, and record the order in which updates must be applied. If a game stores settings or saves outside its installation directory, include those locations in the inventory.
Keep redundant copies
Use at least two copies on separate storage devices. An external SSD or hard drive is practical for installers, patches, saves, screenshots and recovery records. A USB flash drive can be a portable secondary copy, but removable media can fail and should not be the only backup.
- Keep one copy disconnected from the computer except during backup or restoration.
- Periodically open a sample of installers and saves to verify that the files are readable.
- Replace a drive showing errors and copy the data to the replacement before the old device fails completely.
- Include a simple inventory: title, edition, platform, installer version, patch version, save location and any account or server requirement.
Redundancy protects against drive failure, accidental deletion and ransomware; it does not make an account entitlement portable. A backup that contains only an installed directory may still fail if the launcher or account check is missing, so preserve the associated installer, patch and documentation together.
What DRM-free means in practice
A DRM-free installer can start without a store account check, which reduces account-loss risk. It does not restore multiplayer servers, cloud saves, a publisher’s online economy or any proprietary service. Some “offline” editions still require a first activation, a third-party login or a particular runtime, so test the exact files you archived.
Choose editions with stronger preservation characteristics
When a legitimate choice exists, compare the edition rather than assuming that the newest storefront copy is the most durable. A preservation-focused program operated by GOG says qualifying classic games receive DRM-free access, technical support and compatibility work for modern PC configurations. It also says a qualifying game remains in that program, with compatibility maintenance, even if it is later delisted from sale. This is a company commitment, not a guarantee that every game or every online feature will survive indefinitely.
GOG’s positioning is unusually explicit: its managing director has said that “games you bought and downloaded can never be taken from you or altered against your will.” Treat that as the company’s description of its service, not as a legal guarantee that overrides a contract, operating-system change or online dependency.

| Risk dimension | Questions to ask before buying |
|---|---|
| Account recovery | What email, two-factor method and purchase evidence would support recovery? |
| Offline access | Can you download a complete installer, and does it start without an account after installation? |
| DRM and launchers | Is a separate launcher required, and is first-run activation mandatory? |
| Server exposure | Which modes, saves or progression systems disappear if the publisher shuts down its servers? |
| Device portability | Can the files be moved to another supported computer or console, or are they tied to one platform account? |
| Preservation commitment | Does the seller document compatibility maintenance or provide updated offline installers? |
These dimensions indicate relative risk; no storefront promises to preserve every title, and a lower-risk edition can still depend on an operating system, driver or service that changes later. Compare the exact edition, not just the publisher or franchise. A DRM-free single-player edition and an online-only deluxe edition may have very different preservation profiles.
Console-specific account and entitlement risks
Nintendo Switch virtual game cards
Nintendo says eShop purchases are tied to the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. One account can load virtual game cards on up to two consoles. If the purchasing account is unlinked, other users on a console may be unable to start the software. Before changing accounts or selling a console, confirm which Nintendo Account owns each purchase and that the intended console is one of the two authorized systems.
Document which console is authorized and which account is the purchaser. A family member’s profile using the software is not necessarily the profile that owns the entitlement. Keep the purchasing account’s recovery details even if another user is the primary player.
Other console ecosystems
Console stores generally rely on the platform account to redownload and validate purchases. Keep the account’s email, two-factor recovery information and transaction records even when a game is installed on a physical console. A local installation does not necessarily remove the account check. Physical media can also contain only part of a game or require a download, so preserve any available updates and note whether the disc or cartridge starts without network access.
When a publisher shuts down servers
Separate the game’s local code from the services that code contacts. A server shutdown may remove only multiplayer, or it may block menus, saves, progression and startup. Before a shutdown date, download every available update, use any official export tool, and capture screenshots or records of server-hosted achievements that cannot be exported. If the publisher releases an offline patch, preserve the original and patched installers.
No backup can recreate a server-side inventory, matchmaking population or hosted economy. Community replacements may exist, but their legality, security and compatibility vary. Do not assume that a fan-made server or modified executable is authorized merely because it works technically. Keep the publisher’s shutdown notice with your archive so you know which features were discontinued and when.
Legal boundaries for backups and DRM changes
In the United States, 37 CFR 201.40 provides a narrow exemption for lawfully acquired complete video games when an authentication server has ceased providing access. The rule defines that condition as an affirmative statement that access has ended with support actually unavailable, or at least six months of discontinued support. It permits specified copying and modification to restore personal local gameplay, subject to the rule’s conditions.
The exemption is not a blanket right to bypass every DRM system. It does not authorize broad redistribution, commercial exploitation or sharing modified copies. Preserve your own lawful copy, document where it came from, and check the law in your country before altering software. Copyright, contract and anti-circumvention rules differ by jurisdiction. A game’s terms may also restrict account sharing or modification even when a technical workaround exists.

Do you really own a digital game?
Usually, you own a contractual right to access the game under the store’s terms rather than a perpetual digital object. That right can be limited by account status, platform rules, DRM, contract termination and server availability. A DRM-free installer gives you stronger practical control over the files, while a preservation commitment can reduce compatibility risk, but neither changes the terms of an online service or guarantees perpetual access.
The most durable strategy is therefore layered: protect the account and email, preserve independent evidence of purchase, keep lawful offline files and saves, maintain redundant storage, and understand which parts of each game live outside your devices.
Frequently asked questions
How do I keep my games if I lose my account?
Secure the linked email, enable two-factor authentication, retain recovery codes and keep the oldest receipts, transaction IDs and original account emails. If the account is compromised, sign out everywhere, revoke unfamiliar devices, scan for malware and use the store’s official recovery process. A local installation may still require the account to validate access.

Sometimes. Delisting usually stops new sales but does not automatically erase an already downloaded copy. Play can still fail if the game requires launcher authentication, an online entitlement or a publisher server. Test the exact installed files offline and archive the installer and patches while they are available.
What happens when a publisher shuts down the servers?
Only the online features may disappear, or startup, saves and progression may also fail. Download final updates, use official export tools and record server-hosted data before the shutdown. No local backup can recreate matchmaking, a hosted economy or server-side inventory.
How do I back up DRM-free installers and saves?
Download the complete installer and patches, export saves from every profile, include required runtimes and record the operating system and version details. Keep at least two copies on separate storage, with one disconnected, and periodically open sample files to verify readability.
Does DRM-free mean I own the game?
No. DRM-free reduces dependence on an account check for the files you downloaded, but the purchase may still be a revocable licence. DRM-free files also cannot restore online services, cloud saves or a proprietary economy.
Can I legally remove DRM from a game that no longer works?
Rules vary by country. In the United States, 37 CFR 201.40 is a narrow exemption for certain lawfully acquired complete games after an authentication server has ceased providing access, subject to defined conditions. It is not permission to redistribute modified copies or bypass every DRM system. Check local law first.
