Danish authorities say unauthorized parties accessed information about 8.8 million people in the CPR system; the access was closed and the case was under investigation, according to a government notice. Exposure does not prove that your identity has been misused. Be alert for targeted scams, verify unexpected contact independently, and consider a CPR credit warning if you have a concrete reason to suspect misuse.
What happened—and what it does and does not mean
Sikkerdigital.dk reported on 5 October 2026 that unauthorized parties accessed names, addresses, CPR numbers and other information through CPR. A Borger.dk notice on the Rigspolitiet page says information about 8.8 million people was accessed, that the unauthorized access had been closed, and that the matter was under investigation. The notice does not give a breakdown of which fields were exposed for each person, and its status is not a finding that the investigation has concluded.

An exposed CPR number is sensitive personal information, but exposure alone does not show that someone has accessed your accounts or committed identity fraud in your name. The immediate practical response is to be cautious about convincing, personalized approaches and to act promptly if you see signs of actual misuse.
What to do now
- Be cautious with unexpected contact. Treat texts, emails and calls that use personal details with care. Fraudsters may impersonate a bank or public authority and use urgency to pressure you.
- Verify through a channel you choose. Do not click an unexpected link. Open the organization’s official website yourself or call its published main number. Caller ID can be spoofed, and a text can appear in a genuine-looking message thread.
- Do not disclose security or payment details. Do not provide MitID credentials, one-time codes, passwords, card information or CPR details in response to unsolicited contact. Borger.dk says public authorities and banks will not unexpectedly ask for CPR numbers, MitID or login information by email, message or phone.
- Consider a CPR credit warning if there is a reason to suspect misuse. The incident guidance recommends considering it where there is concrete suspicion that your CPR details are being misused. It is also an option after identity fraud or losing a passport or driving licence. The warning is not a guaranteed block on credit.
- Get help if your MitID or identity may be compromised. Follow the official MitID blocking instructions if you think someone else can use your MitID. Sikkerdigital.dk lists Cyberhotline for digital security at 33 37 00 37 and says its opening hours are temporarily extended to 08:00–24:00 “in the coming days.” Because that is temporary, check the official Sikkerdigital.dk hotline information for current hours and advice.
- Respond to signs of identity misuse. Unfamiliar bills or debt-collection demands may be how a person first discovers that personal information has been misused. Contact the company named on the notice using independently verified contact details, and seek official hotline or police guidance where appropriate.
How the CPR credit warning works
The Danish term is kreditadvarsel. It is an optional marker in CPR that warns against loans or credit being granted in your name. A company with a legitimate interest may be informed by CPR-kontoret; the marker signals that it should take particular care with identity checks. It is not a universal credit freeze: companies choose whether to receive the information, and some need to adapt their systems to access it. Adding or removing the marker
You must be at least 15 to add or remove a warning. Use the official self-service route, or ask your municipality’s Borgerservice for help if you cannot use it; an appointment is generally required. An existing warning can make it harder to obtain legitimate loans or credit. You can remove it before applying and add it again afterward.
When it may be worth considering
Consider the warning if you have a concrete reason to think your CPR number is being used for fraud, if you have previously experienced identity fraud, or if you have lost a passport or driving licence. Weigh the added identity-check friction against the inconvenience of applying for legitimate credit while the marker is active.

How to recognize a suspicious approach
Pause if an unexpected message or call asks for personal information, tells you to act urgently, includes a suspicious link, comes from an unfamiliar sender address, or claims to be from a company you do not deal with. Do not let a familiar-looking phone number or text thread reassure you: phone numbers and message identities can be manipulated. If in doubt, contact the organization independently using details from its official website.
Sikkerdigital.dk’s written advice is: “Hvis du modtager uventede sms’er eller mails med links, så klik ikke, men gå selv ind via den officielle hjemmeside – eller ring til afsenderens hovednummer og dobbelttjek.” In English: if you receive unexpected texts or emails with links, do not click; go to the official website yourself or call the sender’s main number to verify.
