Choose an AI agent platform by testing the controls in the exact setup you plan to use—not by relying on a “safe” label or the underlying model alone. For editing and research, look for narrow, revocable access; human approval before consequential actions; observable activity; appropriate data and memory controls; and safeguards for untrusted content such as webpages and documents. No single control guarantees safety, and no comparative evidence here establishes one platform as the safest choice for this work.
Why an AI agent needs a broader safety check
A conventional chat tool mainly returns text. An agent may also plan tasks, retrieve information, use connected tools, read files, retain memory, or change records. Each added capability creates another place where an error, excessive permission, or malicious input can have an effect. Assess the whole configuration—the model, instructions, tools, data sources, memory, permissions, and approval flow—not just the model’s reputation.

For editing and research, define the task and the possible harm first. A draft review on a copy of a document is different from permission to overwrite a shared file, email findings, publish content, or search a confidential repository. The right setup gives the agent only the access and autonomy needed for its particular task.

Ask the vendor to demonstrate each control in the deployment, plan, and configuration you would actually use. A policy statement is not a substitute for seeing what the product enforces.

| Area | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Permissions and identity | Whether the agent has a distinct identity; whether file, account, connector, and API access can be scoped to the task; whether permissions can be revoked; and whether authorization is checked for each action. | Broad delegated access can let an agent reach more information or take more actions than the user intended. |
| Human control | Whether you can use read-only or preview mode; require approval before edits, sends, deletes, publication, or other consequential actions; and reliably pause, stop, correct, or recover from a run. | Approval for high-impact actions should be enforced by the workflow rather than left to the agent to decide. |
| Untrusted content | How the system separates trusted instructions from retrieved pages, documents, and tool results; and whether it is tested against indirect prompt injection. | Content an agent reads may contain instructions intended to redirect its tool use. |
| Visibility and audit | Whether you can inspect the agent’s plan or status, which tools and data it used, and what actions it took; whether logs are reviewable and protected from unnecessary exposure of secrets. | Useful records make oversight, investigation, correction, and accountability possible. |
| Data and memory | What information is sent to the provider; retention and deletion settings; memory scope and isolation; who can access memory and logs; and controls for sensitive files. | Information can persist or be exposed through outputs, tool calls, memory, or logs. |
| Sandboxing and network access | Whether browser or code tools run in an isolated environment, what network destinations they can reach, and how data egress is limited. | Browsing and code execution expand the security boundary beyond the conversation. |
| Governance and dependencies | Whether there is a named owner, an approved inventory of models, connectors, tools, and data sources, change control, monitoring, incident response, and a process for removing access. | Integrations and dependencies can change or accumulate over time, creating new exposure. |
| Evidence quality | Whether the vendor provides agent-specific documentation, relevant safety evaluations, third-party testing information, known-incident handling, and clear limitations. | Capability claims alone do not establish safe behavior in your intended configuration. |
Test how the agent handles malicious or misleading content
Prompt injection is an attempt to make an agent treat untrusted content as instructions—for example, a webpage or document might tell it to disclose data or use a connected tool. The practical question is not whether a vendor says the agent resists prompt injection, but what happens when the agent encounters hostile content while it has real permissions.
During a controlled trial, use representative documents and webpages that contain clearly marked adversarial instructions. Check whether the agent treats those passages as content to analyze rather than directions to follow, whether it tries to invoke tools, and whether the approval gate blocks any sensitive action. Use test data and a restricted environment; a successful test is useful evidence for that setup, not proof that all attacks will be stopped.

- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Roll out access in stages
- Define the task and boundaries. Specify which documents the agent may read, what it is expected to produce, and which actions are out of scope.
- Start with minimal access. For individual editing, begin with read-only access to the narrowest file scope and ask for suggested edits or a review. Do not connect unrelated accounts or repositories.
- Test with representative material. Include ordinary documents and controlled examples of untrusted content. Observe tool calls, data access, and the behavior of approval prompts.
- Review before granting write access. If the read-only workflow works, allow edits only for a specific task where possible. Compare proposed changes with the original and retain a recovery path.
- Expand cautiously and monitor. For organizational research, add only the necessary connectors. Require approval before external sharing or changes to records, review logs, and remove permissions that are no longer needed.
These steps are an application of least-privilege and human-oversight guidance; products differ, so verify that the controls exist and behave as required rather than assuming every platform supports them.

Know who is responsible for each control
Responsibility shifts with how an agent is deployed. Microsoft’s shared-responsibility guidance distinguishes SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS, while noting that service agreements and configurations vary. Use the categories as a starting point, then confirm the actual division of duties with the vendor.

| Deployment | What to establish |
|---|---|
| SaaS | The provider may supply hosting, model runtime, and some safety controls. Your organization still needs to govern data entered into memory or tools, the agent’s identity and permissions, allowed actions, human oversight, and acceptable use. |
| PaaS | Establish which agent settings your team must configure, including instructions, tool selection, permissions, orchestration, memory, and identity. |
| IaaS or self-hosted | Expect your organization to operate more of the stack; clarify which infrastructure, runtime, security, monitoring, and agent controls remain your responsibility. |
For every deployment, ask which protections the provider supplies, which your team configures, which are shared, and how each is demonstrated.

The AI Agent Index research team’s 2025 AI Agent Index, published in 2026, reported that 25 of the 30 agents in its study disclosed no internal safety results, and 23 of 30 had no information about third-party testing. These figures describe that index’s sample; they are not estimates for the entire agent market or a ranking of platforms for editing and research.

Ask for evaluations relevant to the agent setup and workflow you intend to use. The index findings make disclosure worth checking, but the absence of published test information does not by itself prove a product is unsafe, and a published evaluation does not guarantee safe behavior in your configuration.

Questions to take into a vendor demonstration
- Can you show the agent’s identity and the exact file, account, connector, and API permissions it will have in our intended setup?
- Can we keep the agent read-only, require approval before specific actions, and pause or stop a run reliably?
- What does the agent do when a webpage, document, or tool result contains instructions that conflict with the task?
- Can we inspect which data and tools the agent used and what actions it attempted, and control who can access those records?
- What data is retained, how is agent memory scoped and isolated, and how can we delete data or revoke access?
- Which controls are supplied by the platform, which must we configure, and what relevant safety evaluations or third-party testing information can you share?
- How are changes to models, connectors, tools, and agent behavior reviewed, monitored, and communicated?
Features, settings, and service terms can vary by product, plan, and deployment. A vendor’s demonstration should match the configuration you intend to deploy.
