To protect a home computer, keep its software updated, secure your Wi-Fi router, strengthen account logins, check unexpected messages before responding, and back up important files. These steps work together: no single setting or security product can prevent every threat.
- Turn on automatic updates for your operating system, browser, security software, and frequently used apps where available.
- Change your router’s default administrator credentials, enable Wi-Fi encryption, and check for router updates.
- Use a unique password for every important account and enable multifactor authentication (MFA).
- Verify unexpected messages and requests through a contact method you already trust.
- Back up irreplaceable files to an external drive or a carefully chosen cloud service.
1. Keep your computer and apps updated
Updates can include fixes for security weaknesses. Turn on automatic updates for your operating system, web browser, security software, and other apps you use regularly, if those options are available. The FTC advises: “Turn on automatic updates to keep up with the latest protections.” FTC: Five things to do to protect yourself online

Router menus differ by model, so use the maker’s current instructions rather than relying on a universal menu path. The FTC recommends changing default credentials, enabling available security features, and checking which devices are connected. FTC: Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home
3. Protect your accounts with unique passwords and MFA
Use a different, strong password for each important account, especially your email, financial, and cloud-storage accounts. A reputable password manager can help you create and keep track of unique passwords. The FTC explains additional ways to protect accounts in its strong-password guidance.

Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it is offered. MFA adds another login check, so a stolen password alone may not be enough to access an account. When a service offers a choice, prefer an authenticator app or a security key over a passcode sent by text or email; the stronger option still depends on what that service supports. - External drive: Provides a removable copy you can keep disconnected between backup sessions. Store it safely and reconnect it only when backing up or restoring files, which limits its exposure to a computer affected by ransomware.
- Cloud backup: Can keep a copy separate from your home computer and make it accessible online. Before choosing a service, assess its security and privacy practices and how you would restore your files.
Whichever option you use, make sure the backup completes and that you know how to retrieve the files. If you encrypt a device or backup, first make a backup and securely store the encryption recovery information; losing the recovery key can prevent access to your data. Make the protections fit your situation
Start with the free settings and habits above before buying additional products. A security key is an optional MFA method for accounts that support it; it does not replace updates, backups, or cautious behavior. If your computer is managed by an employer or used for business data, follow your organization’s IT policies instead of changing managed settings on your own.
