Why AI-assisted wallet phishing is harder to recognize
Traditional phishing often contained obvious spelling errors, awkward wording, or crude branding. Generative AI removes many of those clues. An attacker can produce fluent email, chat, and social-media messages, copy a company’s visual style, and maintain a believable conversation for hours. Voice-cloning and video tools let the scammer imitate a support representative or even a person you know.

Judge the channel and the requested action instead.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Ledger advises treating unsolicited communications sent by text, WhatsApp, Telegram, phone, or postal mail as phishing. A legitimate-looking message can still be fraudulent if you did not initiate the contact through a known, official route.
The requests that reveal the scam
- Your recovery seed, wallet backup, or private key.
- Your PIN, password, one-time code, or screen-sharing access.
- A demand to install software, connect your wallet to a site, or approve an unfamiliar transaction.
- An instruction to transfer bitcoin to a “secure,” “new,” or “safe” wallet.
- A request to use a Bitcoin ATM, buy gift cards, or pay a fee before your account can be unlocked.
- Pressure to keep the conversation secret or to act within minutes.
Trezor states that no legitimate support agent asks for a wallet backup, PIN, password, or code. Its rule is direct: any request for those secrets is a scam. Because the recovery seed controls the wallet, giving it away is equivalent to handing over the funds.
The recovery seed is the master secret
A recovery seed (also called a backup phrase or seed phrase) can recreate a self-custodied wallet. Anyone who obtains it can generally move the bitcoin without your device, your phone, or your password. A support representative does not need to see it to diagnose an app, replace a device, or explain a transaction.

Rules for handling a seed
- Write it down during wallet setup and store it offline in a place protected from theft, fire, and unauthorized access.
- Do not type it into a website, support form, cloud note, email, messaging app, or computer because an unexpected prompt told you to do so.
- Do not photograph or upload it. A compromised phone or cloud account can expose a digital copy.
- Do not read it aloud on a call or show it on camera.
- Do not enter it into a “verification,” “migration,” or “security check” page reached from an unsolicited message.
Legitimate troubleshooting can use public information such as an app version, device model, or transaction ID. It never requires revealing the seed. If a caller says the seed is needed to stop an attack, end the call.
Use an independent channel to verify every contact
Authentication means finding the company’s contact route yourself rather than trusting details supplied in the message. A phishing page can display the correct logo and a phone number that reaches the attacker. A cloned voice can answer that number convincingly.

- Pause. Do not answer while frightened or rushed. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises slowing down and checking independently.
- End the supplied channel. Hang up, stop replying, close the chat, and ignore any QR code or button in the message.
- Type the domain yourself. Use a previously verified bookmark or enter the address manually. Do not rely on a search-ad result, a shortened URL, or a link copied from the message.
- Check the official help center. Start a new support request from the site or application you opened independently. Explain that you received a suspicious contact.
- Compare the details. If support says an action is required, confirm it inside the official application and through the company’s published support process, not through the original caller.
Ledger identifies https://ledger.com/ledger-live as its official application location. Type that address yourself rather than following a link from a text or chat. For any other wallet, confirm the current domain and download location from documentation you already trust; vendor domains and applications can change.
Recognize urgency and “protect your money” instructions
Scammers create a crisis: an account is supposedly compromised, a tax deadline is approaching, or a withdrawal will happen unless you act immediately. They then offer a single “protective” action—send coins to a new address, use a Bitcoin ATM, or disclose a seed.

The FTC says it will not direct consumers to a Bitcoin ATM and will not demand a cryptocurrency transfer. The agency also advises looking up contact details independently. A real business or public agency will not require you to move cryptocurrency to protect it.
Common pressure phrases
- “Your wallet is under attack; transfer everything now.”
- “This is a confidential security operation. Do not contact anyone else.”
- “Your account will be frozen in 10 minutes.”
- “Read your backup phrase so we can restore access.”
- “Scan this QR code to synchronize your wallet.”
- “Send a small test payment before we release your funds.”
None of these instructions becomes safe because the message contains your name, a genuine-looking case number, or accurate public information about your wallet. Treat the demand itself as the warning.
Verify the destination before signing
Even when you initiated a payment yourself, a malicious computer or browser can display a different address from the one you intended. Clipboard-substitution malware can replace a copied address, while a compromised website can show one address on the page and supply another to the wallet.

Trezor recommends checking the receiving address on the hardware device’s own screen. The physical display provides a second verification boundary that is harder for a compromised computer to alter. Compare the address shown on the device with the address supplied by the intended recipient before approving the transaction.
- Obtain the recipient address through a channel you independently trust.
- Paste or enter it into your wallet application as usual.
- When the hardware wallet displays the transaction, review the address on the device itself—not only on the computer or phone.
- Check the complete address, including characters in the middle, and confirm the amount and network.
- Reject the transaction if any character differs or if the destination is unfamiliar.
For a high-value transfer, confirm the address with the recipient through a second, independently verified channel. A phone number contained in the payment request is not an independent channel if the request itself may be compromised.
Defend against address poisoning
Address poisoning exploits the way many wallets and explorers abbreviate long addresses. An attacker sends a tiny or worthless transaction from an address whose beginning and ending resemble one you previously used. If you copy a familiar-looking entry from your transaction history without checking the middle, you can send funds to the attacker.
The FBI advises checking the entire address. Do not assume that matching the first and last few characters proves identity; the differing middle characters are where the theft occurs.
Safe address-checking routine
- Copy the recipient address only from a source you trust and expect.
- Compare the full string with the address displayed on your hardware wallet.
- Do not select a destination solely because it resembles a prior transaction in your history.
- Investigate suspicious addresses or tokens in a public blockchain explorer before sending. An explorer can show the address’s transaction history, but it cannot make a fraudulent address safe.
- For recurring payments, maintain a verified address record and re-confirm it when the recipient changes systems or requests an update.
Address poisoning is not proof that your wallet itself was hacked; it is a deception aimed at the person preparing the next transfer. Careful, full-address review prevents the mistake.

What a hardware wallet protects—and what it cannot
A hardware wallet is a physical signing device. Its main phishing benefit is that it can show transaction details, including the destination address, on a display separate from the computer or phone. That separation helps detect a maliciously altered address.
| Protection question | What to verify | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Is the destination address authentic? | Compare the complete address on the device screen with the intended recipient’s address. | The device cannot know whether you voluntarily approved a scammer’s address. |
| Is the recovery process safe? | Follow the manufacturer’s documented setup and recovery procedure on the device itself. | Entering the seed into a phishing site defeats the device’s protection. |
| Is the software genuine? | Download wallet software from the manufacturer’s official location opened independently. | A genuine app does not make an unsolicited support request genuine. |
| Can support recover stolen coins? | Use only the vendor’s independently verified support channel for guidance. | Self-custody means no authority can reverse a signed Bitcoin transaction. |
Self-custody gives you control over where funds are sent; no support agent or government office must approve a transaction. That control also means you must protect the seed and inspect every transaction. A hardware wallet reduces some attack surfaces but does not stop a user from revealing the seed or approving a fraudulent payment.
Buying and setting up a device safely
- Buy from the manufacturer’s official store or an authorized seller.
- Check the current model, seller, packaging, and authenticity procedure at the time of purchase; product lines and authorized-seller lists change.
- Install firmware and companion software only through the manufacturer’s independently verified site or application.
- Create or restore the wallet in a private environment where no camera, caller, or remote-support session can see the seed.
- Confirm that the recovery words shown during setup match your written backup and that the backup is stored offline.
- Perform a small, carefully verified transaction before committing a larger amount to a new workflow.
A practical response when a suspicious message arrives
Use the following checklist whether the contact arrives by email, social media, SMS, messaging app, phone, or video.
- Stop interacting. Do not click, scan, call back, install software, or approve a transaction.
- Do not disclose secrets. Keep the seed, PIN, password, and codes private even if the caller claims to be from the wallet company.
- Secure the account you can still control. Close the suspicious session and open the wallet application through a trusted, self-entered address.
- Check activity independently. Review recent transactions in the genuine wallet application or a public blockchain explorer. Do not use a link supplied by the message.
- Contact the vendor independently. Start from the official site or a previously verified bookmark and report the impersonation.
- Warn anyone else involved. If a family member, colleague, or payment recipient may receive the same impersonation, tell them through a known channel.
- Preserve evidence. Save the message, sender address, phone number, domain, screenshots, QR code, transaction hash, and timestamps without forwarding the scam to others.
If you already revealed the seed or approved a transfer
When the recovery seed was exposed
Assume the wallet is compromised. Do not wait for a support reply and do not send more funds to “test” the wallet. Using a clean, independently obtained wallet setup, create a new wallet and move any remaining assets only after verifying the new destination on the device screen. Never import the exposed seed into the new wallet as a way to “keep” the old address; that preserves the compromise.
Recommended Free Tools
If you are unsure how to move remaining funds safely, use the manufacturer’s support process opened from its official site, or consult a qualified professional through a channel you found independently. Do not pay a stranger who contacted you first.

When a transaction was signed
Bitcoin transactions generally cannot be reversed by a support agent. Stop sending additional payments, record the transaction ID and destination address, and contact any exchange or service involved only through a site you opened yourself. The sooner you preserve accurate details, the more useful your report will be.
When a password or code was disclosed
Change the affected password from the genuine service, revoke active sessions where the service provides that option, and secure the email account or phone number used for recovery. Do not reuse the exposed password. A disclosed code can be used quickly, so act from a trusted device without following the scammer’s instructions.
Report cryptocurrency theft quickly
The FBI asks victims to report internet-enabled cryptocurrency crime to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Include transaction dates, amounts, wallet addresses, transaction hashes, domains, phone numbers, usernames, screenshots, and a clear timeline. Submit the report through the IC3 public service announcement and reporting guidance.
Reporting does not guarantee recovery, but it creates a record that can help investigators connect related complaints. Do not pay an “asset recovery” service that demands an upfront fee or claims it can unlock a blockchain transfer. That promise is a common follow-up scam.
How large the risk can be
The FTC reported more than $65 million in reported losses from Bitcoin-ATM scams during the first six months of 2024, with a median reported loss of $10,000. Those figures cover reported Bitcoin-ATM scams in that period, not every form of cryptocurrency theft, so they should not be read as a complete measure of all wallet fraud. They do show why an instruction to use an ATM under pressure deserves immediate skepticism.
A verification framework for every bitcoin payment
Before signing, ask five questions:
- Who initiated this payment? If an unexpected caller or message started the interaction, stop and verify independently.
- Where did the address come from? Confirm it through a known recipient channel, not a supplied link or copied history entry.
- Does the full address match? Compare every character on the hardware wallet display, including the middle.
- Does the amount and purpose make sense? A “test” payment, unlock fee, or emergency transfer is not automatically legitimate.
- Can I wait? Legitimate transactions can be reviewed without surrendering to an artificial deadline.
If any answer is uncertain, do not sign. Close the session and restart verification from the official site or application you opened yourself.
What to teach family members and teams
People who do not manage wallets daily are especially vulnerable to a convincing voice or video. Establish a simple household or team rule: no one may request a seed, PIN, password, or code, and no one may order an emergency transfer without a second-person confirmation through a pre-agreed channel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Publish the official wallet-support domain in an internal password manager or printed procedure.
- Define who can authorize a high-value transfer and how that person is contacted independently.
- Practice identifying an urgent request without clicking its links.
- Keep a written incident checklist with the wallet provider’s genuine support route and the IC3 reporting link.
- Explain that a hardware-wallet screen is the final address check, not an invitation to approve every prompt.
These controls address the human decision that AI impersonation targets. Technology helps, but a pause and an independent verification step are what stop the transfer.
