How to Protect Your Bitcoin From Phishing, Scams, and Exchange Hacks

The safest approach is layered: treat every unsolicited Bitcoin message as hostile, verify websites and addresses independently, lock exchange accounts with strong authentication and withdrawal controls, keep long-term holdings in self-custody only when you can protect the recovery phrase, and act quickly if anything goes wrong. No wallet or exchange can prevent a user from approving a scam transaction or handing over a secret.

What Bitcoin protection actually involves

Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed by a bank or customer-support agent. Once you authorize a transfer to an address controlled by a scammer, the network generally treats it as final. Protection therefore means preventing the theft of credentials and signing authority before a transaction is broadcast.

Most losses fall into four categories:

  • Credential theft: a fake login page, app, support agent or phone call captures your password, one-time code or identity documents.
  • Secret-phrase theft: an attacker obtains a wallet recovery phrase or private key and imports it elsewhere.
  • Deception: you are persuaded to send Bitcoin to a “safe” wallet, investment platform, romantic contact or fake support address.
  • Platform compromise: an exchange account, device or service is breached, frozen or otherwise made unavailable.

A security plan has to address all four. A hardware wallet reduces exposure of private keys to internet-connected systems, but it cannot detect a fraudulent address that you approve or rescue a phrase you have disclosed.

Recognize the scams before you respond

Unexpected “support” contacts

Impostors use calls, texts, email, direct messages, pop-ups and support tickets to claim that an exchange account is compromised. They create urgency, ask for a password, two-factor authentication code, identity document or screen-sharing session, and provide a link or phone number. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center advised in 2024: “If you receive a call or message indicating any kind of account problem or compromise, do not respond, even if it appears official and indicates you must act immediately.”

Real support will not need your password or one-time code. Coinbase Help states: “No one will ever ask for your password, 2FA codes, or for you to transfer assets to a specific or new address, account, vault, or wallet.” End the conversation and open the exchange’s app or type its known address yourself.

Look-alike websites, apps and QR codes

Attackers register domains with a substituted character, extra word or unusual top-level domain. Paid search results and social-media advertisements can place those sites above the genuine exchange in results. A counterfeit wallet app may look authentic while sending your recovery phrase to the operator. QR codes are convenient but conceal the destination; a code displayed in a message, kiosk or pop-up can encode the scammer’s address.

  • Do not log in from a link in an unsolicited message.
  • Check the domain character by character and confirm the app publisher in the device’s official store.
  • Use a bookmark you created after independently verifying the address.
  • After scanning a QR code, compare the complete address on the wallet’s screen with the intended recipient before signing.

“Protect your funds” transfer demands

A caller may say a government agency, security team or exchange requires you to move Bitcoin to a new wallet, “escrow,” vault or Bitcoin ATM. That is a scam. The Federal Trade Commission says, “No legitimate business is going to demand you send cryptocurrency in advance – not to buy something, and not to protect your money.” It also warns: “Don’t believe anyone who says you need to use a Bitcoin ATM, buy gift cards, or move money to protect it or fix a problem.”

Losses reported to the FTC from Bitcoin-ATM scams exceeded $65 million in the first six months of 2024. The FTC reported more than $110 million in such losses during 2023, nearly ten times the 2020 level. These are reported losses, not a measure of every incident, and they describe the U.S. reporting period specified by the FTC.

Investment, romance and “guaranteed return” grooming

A social-media contact may build trust for weeks before presenting an exclusive trading platform or an insider opportunity. The site can display fabricated profits and require a fee or tax before withdrawal. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission identifies guaranteed-return pitches and spoofed digital-asset sites as recurring fraud patterns. No legitimate investment can promise a risk-free return, and a balance shown on an unfamiliar website is not proof that Bitcoin exists or can be withdrawn.

Recovery scams after a theft

Once a victim posts about a loss, a second actor may claim to be a blockchain investigator, lawyer or government contractor who can recover the coins for an upfront fee, tax or “tracing deposit.” The FBI warns that recovery offers can be another scam. Do not send additional money, provide a seed phrase or private key, or give remote access to your device.

Use a verification routine for every message

Make this routine automatic rather than relying on confidence or caller ID:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop. Do not click, call back, reply, scan a code or move funds while the message is creating urgency.
  2. Close the contact channel. Hang up and close the chat, email or pop-up. Caller ID, logos and a familiar display name can be forged.
  3. Open the service independently. Use a previously saved bookmark or type the address yourself. Do not use a URL or phone number supplied in the message.
  4. Check account notifications inside the genuine app. If no alert exists there, treat the message as fraudulent. Contact support only through the verified app or website.
  5. Verify the requested action. No legitimate agent needs your password, 2FA code, recovery phrase or a transfer to a new address to “secure” an account.
  6. Delay high-value transfers. For an unfamiliar recipient, use a small test amount only when you have independently confirmed the destination and understand the recipient; a test does not make a malicious address safe.

Harden an exchange account

Exchange custody is convenient for trading and often provides account-recovery procedures, but it leaves your assets exposed to phishing, account takeover, platform compromise, withdrawal freezes and counterparty risk. Reduce those risks with the following controls.

Credentials and authentication

  • Use a long, unique password generated and stored in a reputable password manager. Never reuse it for email or other financial accounts.
  • Prefer a hardware security key for sign-in when the exchange supports it. Coinbase Help summarizes the preference as: “Hardware keys are best.”
  • If a hardware key is unavailable, use an authenticator application rather than SMS-based codes. Protect the phone and the authenticator backup separately.
  • Turn on login, password-change and withdrawal alerts. Treat an alert you did not initiate as an incident.

Recovery and withdrawal controls

  • Verify the recovery email address and phone number by opening the account settings directly, not by following a message link.
  • Enable withdrawal allowlists or address locks when offered. Add an address only after checking it on a trusted device, and learn the service’s waiting period before relying on the control.
  • Review active sessions, API keys and connected applications regularly. Remove entries you do not recognize and disable trading or withdrawal permissions that you do not need.
  • Keep only the amount needed for near-term trading on an exchange. Move long-term holdings to a properly maintained self-custody setup.

These measures limit an account takeover; they do not protect Bitcoin already sent to a scammer or prevent a user from authorizing a fraudulent withdrawal.

Exchange custody versus self-custody

Neither choice is universally safer. The right choice depends on whether you can reliably protect a recovery phrase, verify transactions and maintain backups.

Factor Exchange custody Self-custody with a hardware wallet
Private-key control The exchange controls the keys and records your balance in its account system. You control the keys; the device keeps them offline and signs transactions after physical approval.
Online account risk Phishing, password theft, SIM attacks, platform breaches and withdrawal freezes can affect access. The keys are less exposed to online account attacks, but the computer or phone can still mislead you into approving a bad transaction.
Recovery The provider may offer password and identity-based account recovery, subject to its rules and availability. Anyone with the recovery phrase can restore the wallet; losing or revealing it can permanently destroy control.
Convenience Fast trading, familiar interfaces and easier on-ramp services. More setup, manual backups and physical confirmation for transactions.
Main responsibility Secure the account, recovery channels and trusted devices; assess platform and counterparty risk. Secure the phrase and device, verify addresses and amounts, plan backups and inheritance, and maintain device integrity.

Set up a hardware wallet without creating a new weakness

Hardware wallets are designed to keep private keys offline. Ledger describes its devices as storing keys offline, and its Ledger Nano S Plus product page says the device uses a Secure Element, supports Bitcoin through Ledger Wallet and requires device approval for transactions. It is one example, not a guarantee of safety or a ranking of products.

  1. Buy through a trusted channel. Purchase from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Do not accept a device that arrives initialized, has a prewritten phrase, or asks you to enter a phrase supplied by a seller.
  2. Inspect the package and device. Follow the manufacturer’s authenticity checks. If seals, packaging or device behavior are suspicious, stop and contact the manufacturer through its official site.
  3. Initialize it yourself. Let the device generate a new recovery phrase. Write the words on paper or another durable offline medium exactly as displayed; never photograph, email or store them in cloud notes.
  4. Set a device PIN. Choose a unique PIN that is not reused elsewhere. Keep the phrase and PIN in separate secure locations.
  5. Install wallet software only from the manufacturer’s official source. Ignore download links in messages and pop-ups. Keep the device firmware and companion software updated according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. Test recovery before depositing a large balance. After recording the phrase, verify that the wallet can be restored on the device or a compatible replacement using the official recovery procedure. Do this privately and never type the phrase into a website, support form or phone app.
  7. Make a small deposit and withdrawal test. Confirm that you understand the account and network before moving a substantial amount.

A hardware wallet cannot protect a phrase that has been disclosed, cannot reverse a signed transaction and cannot identify every malicious smart-contract or destination address. Anyone who asks for the phrase, even while claiming to be manufacturer support, is attempting to take control of the wallet.

Verify every transaction on the device

Malware can replace a copied address, and a fake website can display a different destination from the one it sends. Before pressing the device’s approval button:

  • Compare the full destination address shown on the hardware wallet’s own screen with the recipient’s independently verified address. Do not rely only on the first or last few characters.
  • Check the exact Bitcoin amount and network or fee information presented by the device and software.
  • Reject a request that appears unexpectedly, changes after you paste an address, or asks you to sign a message or transaction you do not understand.
  • For a recurring recipient, confirm that the saved address has not been altered and that an address allowlist or second-person check is available for high-value transfers.

Address poisoning and QR-code substitution exploit human shortcuts. A familiar label in an app is not proof that the underlying address is correct.

Secure the computer and phone that touch your Bitcoin

Protecting keys is not enough if an attacker controls the device used to approve transfers. CISA warns that access to an unencrypted device can allow an attacker to read, alter, steal or deny access to data.

  • Use full-device encryption, a strong screen lock and automatic locking. Keep recovery codes offline.
  • Install applications only from the official operating-system store or the vendor’s verified website. Remove software you no longer need.
  • Use reputable anti-malware protection and a separate browser profile or device for financial activity when practical.
  • Do not grant remote-control access to an unsolicited caller. Legitimate support does not need to watch you type a password or recovery phrase.
  • Maintain encrypted backups of important records, but never back up a seed phrase to an internet-connected service.
  • Secure your email account with a unique password and hardware-based or authenticator-based 2FA; email is often the reset path for an exchange account.

Back up and plan for recovery or inheritance

A recovery phrase is the ultimate backup for a self-custody wallet. Make at least one durable offline copy, protect it from fire and water, and keep access limited to the people who must use it. Do not split or modify the words unless you fully understand the wallet standard and recovery implications; an incorrectly recorded phrase can be as useless as no backup.

Document the wallet brand, model, firmware instructions and the location of the backup without writing the phrase in an ordinary estate document or cloud account. Create an inheritance plan that explains how a trusted person can locate the device and instructions without exposing the phrase to unnecessary intermediaries. Recheck the plan after a move, marriage, divorce, death or change in the people you trust.

What to do immediately after a suspected theft

Speed matters, but panic helps scammers. Use a clean device when possible and follow this order:

  1. Stop communicating and stop sending funds. Do not follow further instructions, pay a fee or attempt a rushed “rescue” transfer.
  2. Contain the account. Change the exchange password, revoke unknown sessions and API keys, and remove unfamiliar withdrawal addresses. If the recovery email or phone may be compromised, secure those accounts first.
  3. Contact the exchange through its official app or website. Never use a phone number or link in the suspicious message. Ask the provider to lock withdrawals and preserve relevant logs where its procedures allow.
  4. Preserve evidence. Record transaction hashes, sending and receiving addresses, asset and amount, dates and times, screenshots, usernames, email headers, phone numbers, domains and the exchange account involved. Do not edit the original files.
  5. Report promptly. In the United States, submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and notify the relevant regulator or local police service. Provide the transaction data exactly as recorded.
  6. Ignore recovery offers. Do not disclose a seed phrase, private key, password or remote-access code to anyone promising to retrieve the Bitcoin.

If a recovery phrase was exposed, treat the wallet as permanently compromised. From a clean device, create a new wallet with a new phrase, verify the destination on the new device, and move any remaining funds only after checking that malware or the attacker no longer controls the old environment. Do not reuse the exposed phrase.

Can stolen Bitcoin be recovered?

There is no general chargeback process for a confirmed Bitcoin transaction. Investigators and exchanges may sometimes identify a receiving service, freeze assets that remain on a regulated platform or connect transactions to a suspect, but success depends on timing, jurisdiction, evidence and whether the funds have been moved through obfuscation services. A blockchain record can support an investigation; it does not guarantee a return of funds.

Be skeptical of anyone promising a certain recovery, demanding cryptocurrency upfront or requesting your wallet credentials. A legitimate report should be based on the transaction hash and documented facts, not a request for another secret.

Quick safety checklist

  • Assume unsolicited Bitcoin support messages are fraudulent until independently verified.
  • Never disclose a password, 2FA code, recovery phrase or private key.
  • Never move Bitcoin to a “safe” wallet, government wallet or Bitcoin ATM because a caller tells you to.
  • Use a unique password, hardware-key or authenticator 2FA, login alerts and withdrawal controls on exchanges.
  • Keep long-term holdings in self-custody only if you can secure and recover the phrase.
  • Buy hardware wallets from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller and initialize them yourself.
  • Confirm the full address and amount on the hardware device before every approval.
  • Keep phones and computers updated, encrypted and free of untrusted remote-access software.
  • After a loss, preserve transaction evidence, notify the service through its official channel and report to IC3 or the appropriate authority.
