Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse OpenAI’s documented OAuth 2.0 Authorization Code flow with PKCE and OpenID Connect (OIDC), then verify the returned ID token on your backend before associating the person with an account in your app. ChatGPT provides an identity assertion; your app remains responsible for account creation and linking, its own session, authorization, and organization sign-in policy.
What Sign in with ChatGPT gives your app
For identity-only sign-in, OpenAI’s quickstart specifies the openid profile email scopes. With the appropriate identity scopes, your app can receive a stable account identifier and available name, email address, and profile picture. OpenAI says identity sign-in does not independently share a user’s conversations, memory, files, tokens, billing information, or other ChatGPT account data. OpenAI’s quickstart and its Help Center explanation distinguish identity from separately authorized access.

A ChatGPT plan is not an API key, and signing in does not give your app access to private ChatGPT content. If your product needs delegated data or actions, or wants to use a ChatGPT plan for eligible requests, treat that as a separate authorization flow: additional Responses API scopes and user authorization are required. Organization approval may make an access type available, but the user must still authorize it and have the relevant product permissions.
Implement the sign-in flow securely
- Register the client and exact callback URLs. Obtain an OpenAI client ID and register the precise callback URL for each environment, such as production and staging. Load the issuer, authorization endpoint, token endpoint, and JWKS URI from OpenAI’s production OIDC discovery document rather than hard-coding illustrative values. Require the ID token’s
issclaim to match the discovered issuer exactly. See the OpenAI developer quickstart. - Create a new, bound authorization transaction. On your backend, generate fresh
state, a PKCE verifier and its S256 challenge, and a nonce for each attempt. Bind short-lived transaction data to a server-generated browser-session identifier. In production, transaction storage must expire entries and support atomic, one-time consumption across application instances. - Exchange the authorization code on the backend and verify the ID token. Validate its signature and claims before trusting any identity data. Reject tokens with an invalid signature, issuer, audience, expiration, or nonce. Clear temporary authorization state after success and failure.
- Map the verified identity to a local account and issue your session. Associate the verified issuer, client ID, and subject (
sub) with the account in your system, then create your app’s own session. Prefer a maintained OAuth/OIDC library. If you have a confidential client, keep its client secret in a server-side secret manager; public clients do not receive or use a secret. - Make account linking a deliberate user action. Give returning users a clear way to choose the same sign-in method and let an existing user confirm linking. Do not silently merge accounts just because email addresses match. Use the verified identity tuple and your own account-recovery and linking rules.
- Protect tokens and sign-out. Keep tokens out of browser storage, source control, logs, analytics, support transcripts, and URLs. Clear temporary transaction state. Signing out of your service must clear your app’s session. For token-sharing open-source apps using the applicable renewable-session flow, OpenAI’s account and session guide documents revoking the renewable session at sign-out and clearing local tokens; confirm the behavior for the flow your client actually uses.
Keep identity sign-in separate from authorization
Request only the scopes needed for the task. The identity-only scopes are openid profile email; they establish sign-in and do not authorize access to ChatGPT conversations or OpenAI API resources. If you request additional access, identify the permission and explain it separately from account sign-in. OpenAI’s quickstart describes the boundary plainly: “Your application owns account creation, enterprise sign-in policy, sessions, authorization, and connector access.”

Check eligibility and organization policy
Availability has two dimensions. OpenAI’s Help Center says Sign in with ChatGPT is available globally to authenticated users, is rolling out across selected partners, and can be restricted by organization policy. Global admins manage External access settings. Separately, OpenAI’s developer guide describes commercial website integration as available to selected partners through a limited trial. A user being able to sign in does not mean any developer can enable commercial integration independently; confirm eligibility with OpenAI. See the Help Center availability and policy details and the developer quickstart.

Security review checklist
- Exact callback URLs are registered for each environment; OIDC endpoints and issuer come from the production discovery document.
- Every attempt gets fresh state, PKCE verifier/challenge, and nonce, with short-lived server-side transaction data consumed once.
- The backend exchanges the code and validates token signature, issuer, audience, expiration, and nonce before accepting identity claims.
- The local account is associated with the verified identity tuple, and your service—not ChatGPT—issues and protects its session.
- Account linking is explicit; tokens are not exposed in browser storage, logs, analytics, support records, source control, or URLs.
- Identity scopes are not confused with separately authorized data access, API permissions, or plan-based eligible requests.
