1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose n8n when you need to coordinate work across services; choose direct API code when the integration belongs inside a custom application and your team wants to own its behavior in that codebase. They are not mutually exclusive: n8n’s HTTP Request node can call REST APIs, so a workflow can combine ready-made integrations with custom requests. The right fit depends on what you are building and who will run it—not on a proven universal advantage in speed, cost, or security.
What is the difference?
n8n is a workflow automation platform for connecting API-enabled apps. A workflow can coordinate triggers, transformations, and actions across services using built-in integrations or API requests. n8n offers both managed Cloud and self-hosted paths; see its official site for an overview.

With a direct integration, a team implements an API interaction as part of its own application code. The specific architecture, language, deployment, and operational responsibilities depend on the project; there is no single required stack.
Using n8n does not mean avoiding APIs. Its HTTP Request node can call REST APIs, including services without a dedicated n8n integration. It lets you configure the method, URL, query parameters, headers, body, and authentication, and can import a cURL example from a service’s documentation. As n8n’s documentation puts it: “When using this node, you’re creating a REST API call. You need some understanding of basic API terminology and concepts.”

Which approach fits the work?
Use n8n for cross-service orchestration
n8n is a natural fit when the main task is moving information or triggering actions across several services and the team values building and inspecting that process as a workflow. Built-in integrations can cover common connections; for a service without a suitable node, the HTTP Request node may provide a route, provided you can configure the service’s API and authentication details.
Use direct API code for application-owned behavior
Direct code fits when the integration is part of a custom product or application and the team has a reason to implement and operate that logic in its own codebase. This is a fit criterion, not evidence that custom code inherently performs better, costs less, or is more secure. The team also needs the implementation and operational skills appropriate to its chosen architecture.

Use both when the process and the API call have different needs
A hybrid can make sense when n8n coordinates the larger process but one operation requires a custom API request. The HTTP Request node supports REST calls, so using n8n need not mean limiting a workflow to prebuilt integrations.

| Decision area | n8n workflow | Direct API integration code |
|---|---|---|
| Main shape of work | Coordinate triggers, transformations, and actions across services using built-in integrations or REST requests. | Implement API behavior as part of an application; the architecture depends on the project. |
| Custom API behavior | Configure request details in the HTTP Request node, including method, URL, parameters, headers, body, and authentication. | Implement the required behavior in the application code and maintain it there. |
| Operations | Choose Cloud or self-hosting; available plan features and execution limits differ. | The project team chooses and operates its runtime, deployment, monitoring, and updates. |
| Skills | Visual workflow building still calls for API concepts when a workflow makes API requests. | Requires the implementation and operations skills for the project’s chosen stack. |
| Cost | Plan prices and execution allowances are published, but do not by themselves establish total cost of ownership. | Engineering and operating costs vary by project; no universal comparison is established. |
Plan for authentication and access
Configure credentials for the service you are calling
When using HTTP Request, n8n recommends predefined credentials when available. Its generic credentials support patterns including Basic authentication, OAuth, header authentication, and query authentication. OAuth setup depends on the grant type and usually involves configuring an app, service, or integration with n8n’s OAuth redirect URL. Check the third-party service’s requirements rather than assuming a particular API will work without setup. See the generic credential documentation.

- [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
- [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
- [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
- [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
Review n8n API-key scope separately
For calls to n8n’s public REST API, the documentation says to send the key in the X-N8N-API-KEY header. It states that keys have full account access on non-Enterprise plans, while Enterprise instances can restrict key scopes; where scope controls are available, use only what is needed. This describes n8n’s API-key model, not a general security ranking of workflow tools against custom code. See n8n API authentication and API scopes.
Estimate the operating picture before deciding
Compare the complete work involved rather than treating a subscription price as equivalent to the cost of custom integration code. List the expected workload, required features, hosting ownership, development and maintenance effort, credential administration, and governance needs. The evidence available does not establish a universal winner on performance, security, or total cost.
As a dated commercial snapshot, n8n’s official pricing page accessed October 4, 2026 listed Starter at €20/month billed annually with 2.5K workflow executions, Pro at €50/month billed annually with 10K executions, and self-hosted Business at €667/month billed annually with 40K executions. The page describes Community Edition as a standard self-hosted version available on GitHub. It also says plans include unlimited users and workflows and every integration, and that pricing is based on monthly workflow executions regardless of complexity. These are vendor plan terms, not a comparison with custom-code costs; plan terms can change, so check the current official pricing page before budgeting.
