Protecting an Android phone takes preparation and a quick response: set a hard-to-guess screen lock, switch on the theft protections available for your device, and make sure Google Find Hub is ready before the phone goes missing. If it is stolen, lock it remotely, secure your Google Account and phone service, then weigh the consequences before erasing it. No single setting prevents every theft or unauthorized access attempt.
What to set up before your phone is stolen
Use a strong screen lock
Set a PIN, password, or pattern that someone watching you enter it could not easily guess. Avoid obvious choices such as a simple sequence or a date others can identify. A screen lock is the first barrier to someone handling your phone, and Google says it also protects certain private data, including saved passwords and location history. The exact options and menu names vary by device. Google’s Android screen-lock guidance explains the available lock types.

Turn on the theft protections your phone supports
Open Settings and look for a section named Theft Protection or Lost Device Protection. If available, review and enable protections such as Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and authentication safeguards. These features address different risks: some are designed to respond to suspicious snatching behavior, while others can lock a phone after it has been disconnected for a period. Availability depends on the phone, Android version, and rollout region; a feature announcement does not confirm that a particular handset has it.

On supported devices, Android’s Advanced Protection mode can bundle security controls such as Play Protect, USB Protection, failed-authentication locking, and restrictions on apps from unknown sources. Those restrictions can affect how you install apps and use some accessibility services; performance may also be affected on supported devices using Memory Tagging Extension (MTE). Prepare Find Hub and account recovery
Confirm that your Google Account is on the phone, Find Hub is enabled, and the device is visible in Google Play. Google lists power, a network connection, an account, Find Hub being on, and Play visibility among the conditions relevant to remote device actions. A lock screen and connectivity also matter to locating assistance. Check the setup in Google’s Find Hub help.
Make sure you can recover your Google Account without relying on the missing phone. Keep two-step verification backup options somewhere separate and accessible, such as a secure location at home. If the phone is your only route to a verification code or recovery prompt, theft can make it harder to use Find Hub and protect the account.

Consider extra protection for sensitive apps
Private Space, where supported, lets you place selected apps in a separate protected area. It can add a barrier around sensitive apps, but it does not prevent someone from physically taking the phone, and it is not a substitute for a strong screen lock. Its availability and setup depend on the Android version and device.

In crowded settings where a phone could be snatched or dropped, a compatible lanyard or tether may help you keep hold of it. This is a physical precaution, not a data-security control: it cannot protect information if the phone is taken, and it does not replace a screen lock or remote recovery setup.

What to do if your Android phone is stolen
- Try to locate and lock it. From another device or browser, open Find Hub, select the missing phone, and use the available locate and mark-as-lost or lock controls. Whether an action works depends on the phone meeting the relevant setup and connectivity conditions.
- Use Remote Lock if it is the faster option. Go to android.com/lock from another device. Google’s January 2026 announcement describes Remote Lock as available on Android 10 and later, with an optional security challenge. The feature’s availability and behavior can still vary by device and region.
- Secure your Google Account and phone service. From a trusted device, review account security and protect access if you suspect the phone or account may be exposed. Contact your carrier to suspend the SIM or service and ask whether it can block the handset using its IMEI; Google notes that carriers can use the IMEI to disable a device.
- Change other credentials if access may have been exposed. If the phone was unlocked, or you have reason to think someone reached your accounts, change passwords for high-value services. Contact your bank or payment providers promptly if banking or payment access may be at risk.
- Erase only after weighing the trade-off. Remote erase permanently deletes data from the device, may not delete data on an SD card, and means the phone is no longer available in Find Hub. If you still hope to locate or recover the phone, understand that consequence before choosing erase.

Why theft-protection features may differ by phone
Google introduced Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Remote Lock, Private Space, and stronger authentication in its 2024 feature overview, but rollout paths and Android version requirements differ. Later updates describe additional safeguards and regional changes, not universal availability on every current Android phone. Google’s January 2026 update, for example, discusses Identity Check and authentication safeguards for supported newer Android versions, along with January 2026 changes to Remote Lock and default-on protections in Brazil. Its 2026 Android security article also covers Android 17 changes and expanded default-on availability in selected markets.
Check your phone’s Settings and the manufacturer’s guidance to confirm what is actually available on your model and in your country.
