Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteConnecting an AI agent to an app gives it some ability to act through that app’s permissions. Before linking email, files, a calendar, or another account, check exactly what access it requests, grant only what the task needs, and keep consequential actions behind a clear human approval. These steps reduce risk; they cannot make an agent completely safe.
Is it safe to let an AI agent access your email or files?
It depends on what the connection lets the agent do and what it may encounter while working. A read-only connection used to summarize messages has a smaller potential impact than one that can also send or delete them. The wider the permissions and the more autonomy the agent has, the more an unintended instruction or misuse could affect your account. OWASP identifies risks including prompt injection, tool abuse, data exfiltration, excessive autonomy, and sensitive-data exposure in its AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.

There is also a risk that is easy to miss: the material an agent reads is not necessarily trustworthy. A malicious instruction can be placed in an email, document, or webpage and try to redirect the agent. NIST calls this agent hijacking, a form of indirect prompt injection, in its January 17, 2025 discussion of agent-hijacking evaluations. An agent asked only to summarize a message may still encounter text attempting to get it to share information or perform another action.
There is no source-supported incident percentage that establishes how often consumer accounts are compromised through AI agents. The practical approach is to limit what a connection can reach and do, then require confirmation for actions with meaningful consequences.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Check and limit an agent’s app permissions
When an app or service asks you to authorize a connection, review the permissions on the account’s authorization screen rather than assuming the agent needs everything it requests. Exact options vary by app and connector.
- Match access to the task. An agent that only needs to summarize email generally needs read access, not permission to send or delete messages.
- Choose narrower scopes where available. Prefer read-only access or a restriction to specific resources when those options cover the task.
- Decline unrelated capabilities. Be cautious if a connector requests permission to send, delete, share, purchase, or change settings when the task does not require those actions.
- Disconnect access you no longer need. Review connected-app grants in the account and revoke access that is no longer required.
OWASP recommends limiting the extensions, functions, and downstream permissions available to an agent, and using the user’s identity with the minimum necessary OAuth scope. Its LLM06:2025 guidance on excessive agency describes a mailbox example in which read-only OAuth access and manual review before sending constrain what can go wrong.
Treat emails, documents, and webpages as untrusted input
An agent may process hostile content while doing an ordinary task. A message that looks like routine correspondence, a shared document, or a webpage can contain instructions aimed at the agent rather than at you. NIST describes such instructions as a way to redirect an agent toward an unintended, harmful task. OWASP likewise advises treating external data as untrusted and maintaining clear boundaries between data and instructions.

You cannot reliably solve this by asking the model to ignore suspicious text. Instead, limit what the agent is authorized to do. Text inside a message or webpage should not, by itself, be enough to authorize sending a reply, deleting content, making a purchase, changing access, or sharing private information. Keep those capabilities unavailable unless the task genuinely requires them, and require your review before consequential actions.
Protect the credentials and tokens behind the connection
A connected agent may use authorization tokens or account credentials to reach an app. OWASP’s MCP Top 10 warns that hard-coded credentials, long-lived tokens, and secrets stored in model memory or protocol logs can expose connected systems. This guidance concerns MCP ecosystems; it should not be read as a claim that every AI agent uses MCP. NIST also discusses risks from static tokens and local agents operating with broad user-account access in its agent identity and authorization guidance.
- Use the integration’s supported authorization flow instead of putting a password or API secret into a prompt or ordinary chat.
- Review which apps have account access and revoke grants that are no longer needed.
- Where an integration offers scoped, short-lived credentials, prefer those over credentials with broader or longer-lasting access.
These are risk-reduction measures, not proof that a particular vendor’s storage or token-handling practices are safe. Check the app’s actual permission and authorization options rather than assuming how it protects credentials.

Require approval for actions that matter
Keep a human check for actions that could expose private information, spend money, change account access, or be difficult to reverse. An approval should identify the action and its target—for example, which message will be sent or which file will be shared—so you can judge what you are authorizing.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not rely on the model to decide whether an action is allowed. OWASP LLM06:2025 says, “Implement authorization in downstream systems rather than relying on an LLM to decide if an action is allowed or not.” In practice, permissions enforced by the connected app or service should restrict the agent even if it encounters misleading instructions. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet also recommends approval for high-impact actions, including action-bound approvals and short-lived authorization for critical actions.
Approval prompts are not automatically protective if they appear too often. NIST cautions that repeated, low-value prompts can lead people to approve reflexively. Reserve confirmation for meaningful risks, and avoid granting broad standing permission just to silence prompts.

Compare connectors before granting access
When choosing between app connections or reviewing an existing one, compare the controls that determine what the agent can reach and do:
- Which scopes does it request, and is read-only access available?
- Can access be limited to selected files, folders, mailboxes, or other resources?
- Can the agent send, delete, purchase, share, or change settings?
- What does the integration disclose about token scope and expiration?
- Can you review and revoke the connection?
- Does a consequential operation require an explicit approval that identifies the action?
Do not infer that a connection is appropriately limited simply because it appears in an authorization flow. Read the scopes and available controls for the specific app and task.
