Ask before photographing or recording people, avoid places where privacy is expected, and learn what the exact glasses model’s recording indicators and controls do. A light can signal capture, but it cannot prove that people noticed it or agreed to be recorded.
Before you record, put people’s choice first
Meta’s responsible-use guidance for its AI glasses says to ask permission before capturing people and to avoid sensitive locations or places where people expect privacy. These are the company’s recommendations, not a complete statement of recording law.

- Ask in a way that lets someone freely say no. If asking is impractical, skip the shot or reframe it so people are not identifiable.

Ray-Ban Meta is a documented example, not a template for every camera-equipped glasses product. Ray-Ban’s current US FAQ describes two LEDs: an inward-facing notification light and a front-facing capture light. The capture LED signals photo or video capture. For photos, the LEDs blink; during video recording, the capture LED stays lit, according to the manufacturer.

The same FAQ describes a physical power switch, a capture button for one-touch photos and videos, voice commands for hands-free capture, and notification settings in the Meta AI app. These are manufacturer descriptions, not an independent audit of every recording mode. Check the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming other brands behave the same way.

A recording indicator is notice, not consent
A small light can be hard to see, and a person who sees it may not know what it means. The 2024 CHI study “In Focus, Out of Privacy: The Wearer’s Perspective on the Privacy Dilemma of Camera Glasses” examined wearers of Ray-Ban Stories, an earlier model. Participants described feeling responsible for protecting bystanders’ privacy and wanted more reliable indicators. The study also found a gap between wearers’ and bystanders’ assumptions about motivations and needs; these findings describe its participants and device context, not every wearer or bystander.

Meta says photos and videos for a gallery or streaming activate both the notification and capture LEDs, and that its features prohibit photo or video capture if the light is covered. In a July 2026 explanation, Meta said second-generation glasses automatically disable the camera if the capture LED is detected as blocked; capture remains unavailable until the light is unblocked. Meta also says the shutter sound is audible to the wearer but is not practical as a signal heard at a distance. These are company claims and the automatic-blocking safeguard is specific to the second generation; they do not establish equivalent protections on other glasses.
Even when an indicator works as described, do not treat it as proof that nearby people saw it, understood it, or consented. Meta’s explanation is at about.fb.com/news/2026/07/ai-glasses-capture-led/.

Before wearing camera glasses around others, identify how to power them off, take a photo, start and stop video, and manage voice or app-based features. For Ray-Ban Meta, the manufacturer documents a physical power switch, capture button, voice capture, LEDs, and app notification settings. Other models may use different controls and indicators.

Review the companion app’s privacy and data settings, and check which features use the camera or send information for processing. The available product and policy guidance establishes that Meta offers camera-based AI features, but does not settle every current setting, retention period, or processing pathway. Consult current documentation for the exact feature you use rather than assuming where images or other data are stored or how they are used.
Check the law where and how you are recording
Recording and privacy laws vary by jurisdiction and by context, including whether a conversation is recorded and whether a space is private. The sources cited here are not a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal guide. Check current local law for your circumstances, particularly before recording conversations or filming in private spaces.
As a dated example, the Associated Press reported on October 1, 2026, that California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have penalized recording people without permission in specified private settings and required recording indicators on smart glasses and other wearable devices starting in 2028. The bill was not enacted, so its proposed requirements are not current California law. AP reported that Newsom considered the bill’s device definition too broad and noted existing law concerning recording in places generally considered private. The report is not a comprehensive survey of California law or of other jurisdictions.
