How to Protect Aptos Trades From Sandwich Attacks (2026 Guide)

Use Aptos’s opt-in encrypted mempool whenever your wallet or application offers it. The client encrypts the transaction payload before submission, validators order the ciphertext without seeing the swap function or arguments, and the payload is decrypted only after consensus finalizes the block. That removes the classic information advantage used to copy a pending trade and place transactions before and after it. Encryption does not hide your address or gas fields, guarantee a price, or make a wallet route private automatically, so you still need sensible slippage and transaction checks.

Why a sandwich attack can happen on Aptos

A sandwich attack targets a trade that is visible before execution. A bot watches the pending transaction, submits a buy immediately before it, lets the victim’s swap move the pool price, then sells immediately afterward. The bot attempts to capture the price movement while the victim receives a worse fill. The same pattern can affect a sell in the opposite direction.

Aptos validators decide which transactions enter a block and in what order. Before agreement and execution, transactions wait in mempool buffers. Aptos Improvement Proposal 144 (AIP-144) explains that pending transactions were public to validators, giving a block leader an opportunity to reorder or censor them for profit and identifying sandwiching as a harmful form of maximal extractable value (MEV).

This is an information and ordering problem, not a defect in a particular decentralized exchange. A contract can enforce its swap rules correctly while a watcher still reacts to a cleartext transaction before the contract executes it. Aptos has not published an official total for sandwich losses, victim counts, or attack frequency, so decisions should be based on the protection mechanism and its limits rather than an invented loss estimate.

What Aptos encrypted mempool protection does

Aptos’s strongest native defense is an optional encrypted-mempool path introduced through AIP-144. A client obtains the current epoch encryption key, encrypts the transaction payload locally, and submits the ciphertext. Validators can include and order the ciphertext, but they cannot read the called function or its arguments while the transaction is pending. After consensus finalizes the block, a validator threshold decrypts the payload so execution can proceed.

What is hidden before execution

  • The Move entry function or other payload details.
  • Arguments such as the asset, amount, recipient, limit price, or route encoded in the payload.
  • The trade intent that would otherwise let a watcher construct a front-running and back-running sequence.

What remains visible

The first version does not hide sender metadata. The sender address and gas-fee fields remain visible, and the transaction data is recorded on-chain once the block is finalized. Encryption therefore reduces pre-trade information about what you are calling; it is not an anonymity system.

Why the trust model matters

The mechanism uses validator threshold decryption rather than a new private relay operated by one company. Aptos’s launch description says no single validator, and no subset below the chain’s two-thirds honest-stake threshold, can decrypt a pending transaction. AptosBFT is documented as tolerating up to one-third malicious validator nodes. AIP-144 says the design adds no trust assumption beyond the validator set.

How to submit a protected Aptos trade from a wallet

Encryption is selected per transaction. An ordinary cleartext submission remains observable in the pending pool, so seeing an encrypted option somewhere in a wallet does not mean every transaction uses it.

  1. Use a wallet that exposes encrypted signing. Aptos identifies Petra as the first wallet with an encryption option in its signing flow. Update the wallet through its official distribution channel, then start the swap as usual.
  2. Inspect the final signing screen. Look for an encrypted-transaction, encrypted-mempool, or equivalent privacy toggle in the transaction approval view. The exact label can change as wallet releases evolve; the important test is that the wallet explicitly says the payload will be encrypted before submission.
  3. Turn the option on for the specific trade. Because the setting is opt-in per transaction, enable it each time unless the wallet clearly documents a persistent default. Do not assume that a previous encrypted swap changed the default for future swaps.
  4. Review economic limits separately. Set a slippage ceiling, deadline or expiration where the application supports one, and the correct input and output assets. Encryption conceals intent; it does not stop a pool from moving, prevent a failed transaction, or guarantee that the amount you receive is favorable.
  5. Approve and retain the transaction hash. After consensus, the finalized record will reveal the payload needed for execution and auditing. Save the hash so you can verify status and actual amounts on an Aptos explorer.

How to tell whether the route was really encrypted

Check the wallet’s approval details or developer log for an encrypted-payload indicator before signing. If the interface only shows a normal serialized transaction and provides no encryption status, treat the submission as cleartext. After submission, a pending transaction that exposes its function and arguments to a monitoring tool is evidence that this particular route was not encrypted. A finalized transaction is expected to become readable; finalization visibility is not a failure of the feature.

Integrating encrypted submissions in an Aptos application

Applications can use the Aptos TypeScript SDK version 7.0.0 or later. The SDK handles the client-side steps: fetching the current epoch encryption key, encrypting the payload, and submitting the encrypted transaction. Existing Move contracts do not need to be modified because the protection wraps the transaction before consensus rather than changing the contract’s entry functions.

Implementation checklist

  1. Pin a supported SDK. Use Aptos TypeScript SDK 7.0.0 or a later release, and verify the version in the application lockfile and deployment artifact.
  2. Fetch the current epoch key through the SDK. Epoch keys rotate with the validator epoch. Do not hard-code a key or cache it indefinitely.
  3. Build the ordinary transaction payload first. Keep contract arguments, coin types, recipient, amount, and user limits exactly as they would be for a clear submission.
  4. Call the SDK’s encrypted-payload flow. Encryption must happen on the client before the request leaves the application. A server that receives a clear payload and encrypts later has already exposed the user’s intent to that server.
  5. Submit and monitor the returned hash. Handle normal pending, finalized, rejected, and expired states. Record whether the encrypted path was selected so support staff can distinguish a protected submission from a fallback.
  6. Test key rotation and failures. Exercise an epoch transition, stale-key response, rejected ciphertext, wallet cancellation, and fullnode submission failure in staging before enabling the feature for users.

Simulation and privacy risk

AIP-144 warns that simulating an encrypted transaction through the same fullnode used for submission can create timing or statistical associations with the cleartext simulation. If an application must simulate, separate simulation infrastructure from the submission path where practical, minimize identifying telemetry, and avoid logging complete payloads alongside a user’s address and exact submission time. Encryption protects the pending payload; it does not erase data your own application already collected.

What encrypted mempool protection does not solve

  • Execution price: A hidden order can still receive a poor fill because liquidity is thin, the pool moves for another reason, or the user permits excessive slippage.
  • Post-finalization disclosure: The payload becomes readable on-chain after the block is finalized, as required for verifiable execution.
  • Sender privacy: The address and gas fields remain visible, allowing observers to connect activity to a known account.
  • Every wallet or route: Encryption is opt-in. A decentralized exchange, aggregator, hardware-wallet flow, or custom RPC route may submit ordinary cleartext unless it explicitly integrates the feature.
  • Malicious application behavior: A front end can know your order before encryption if it constructs or logs the trade. Use applications you trust and inspect what is signed.
  • Other MEV strategies: Encryption targets pre-execution information leakage and ordering abuse. It does not guarantee resistance to liquidation races, oracle manipulation, pool manipulation, or attacks based on information already public.

How Aptos protection compares with other privacy approaches

Private transaction methods differ in who can read the order, who must be trusted, and whether they address price controls. Aptos’s own comparison places private relays, trusted execution environments, external threshold committees, and validator-native encryption on a trust spectrum.

Approach Who can read the order before execution? Trust and architecture Sender and fee metadata Availability on Aptos Price protection
Cleartext public mempool Validators and other observers can read the payload. No additional intermediary, but fully exposed intent. Visible. Default when encryption is not selected. None beyond the contract’s own limits.
Trusted builder or private RPC The relay or builder can generally read the order. Adds trust in that operator and its policies. Usually visible to the intermediary. Depends on the provider and application integration. May change ordering, but does not automatically enforce a user’s maximum price impact.
TEE-based execution Intended to restrict visibility to a hardware-isolated environment. Relies on specific hardware, software attestation, and operator controls. Depends on implementation. Not the Aptos-native path described by AIP-144. Depends on the application design.
External threshold committee Distributed committee members may hold encrypted shares. Adds an external committee and its availability and governance assumptions. Depends on implementation. Separate integration, not required by Aptos encrypted mempool. Depends on the execution service.
Aptos validator encryption Validators order ciphertext; threshold decryption occurs after consensus. Uses the Aptos validator set, with no additional trust assumption beyond that set. Sender and gas fields remain visible. Wallet and SDK support are being added; Petra is identified as the first wallet with the option. Hides intent but does not guarantee a fill or set slippage limits.

Performance, epochs, and validator guarantees

Aptos’s 2026 launch announcement reports roughly 20 milliseconds of latency overhead per block, based on 50-node benchmarks against production AptosBFT. The same announcement contextualizes that figure with block finalization under one second. These are published network benchmarks, not a promise that every wallet, fullnode, geographic region, or congested application will observe the same end-to-end time.

AIP-144 describes a launch design intended to support more than 1,000 transactions per second using batch threshold encryption. Treat that as a stated launch target rather than a guaranteed throughput for a specific decentralized exchange or wallet.

Aptos epochs are described in AIP-144 as periodic two-hour intervals during which validator membership and stake distribution remain fixed. The client therefore needs the current epoch encryption key. Key rotation is normal; an integration that assumes one key forever can fail or fall back to a less private path.

Practical trade controls to use with encryption

Set a narrow slippage limit

Choose the maximum price movement you can accept instead of relying on a large default. A narrow limit can cause a legitimate transaction to fail when the market moves, but a wide limit gives any adverse movement more room to reduce your output. Encryption removes one source of adversarial information; it does not choose this economic boundary for you.

Reduce unnecessary order size

Large trades move automated-market-maker pools more than small trades. Splitting an order can reduce immediate price impact, although each additional transaction has its own gas cost, timing, and market risk. Use the application’s quoted route and calculate the total cost before deciding.

Check the recipient, assets, and deadline

Verify the token type, input amount, destination account, minimum received amount, and expiration before signing. A hidden payload is still capable of sending funds to the wrong address if you approve incorrect arguments.

Avoid leaking the order during support or debugging

Do not paste a complete unsigned payload, exact amount, and planned submission time into public chats. If you need help, redact addresses and amounts and share only the error and transaction state that support requires.

Troubleshooting an allegedly protected trade

The wallet has no encryption option

Confirm that the wallet version and the application integration support Aptos encrypted transactions. If the signing screen offers no explicit encrypted path, do not assume the route is protected. You can wait for support, use an application that documents encrypted submission, or accept that the transaction will be cleartext and use stricter slippage and size controls.

The transaction fails after an epoch change

Refresh the wallet or SDK state and retry key retrieval. An expired epoch key or stale client cache can invalidate an encrypted payload. Ensure the retry creates a new transaction and does not blindly resubmit a potentially consumed sequence number.

The transaction remains pending

Check whether the application submitted encrypted ciphertext or merely displayed a privacy label. Then inspect network status, account sequence number, gas balance, and fullnode connectivity. Encryption adds a small published block-level overhead, but a long delay is more likely to involve submission, account, or network conditions than the encryption step itself.

The swap executes at an unexpectedly poor price

Encryption cannot reverse a trade that met its contract conditions. Compare the finalized input and output with your approved minimum, review pool liquidity and route selection, and report a discrepancy only if the chain result violates the signed limits. Do not increase slippage automatically on a retry.

A developer’s simulation exposes the order

Move simulation and submission onto separate infrastructure where feasible, remove payloads and exact timestamps from logs, and review analytics, error reporting, and proxy layers for copies of the cleartext request. The encrypted transaction protects the network submission, not an application’s own observability pipeline.

What to expect as Aptos support expands

Aptos’s launch materials identify wallet and SDK support as the initial user path and name Decibel as a future integration for private order execution. Availability can differ by application, wallet release, and transaction type. Treat an integration as protected only when its current signing or API documentation explicitly confirms encrypted payload submission.

The design is deliberately protocol-native: validators can verify and execute the transaction after consensus without requiring a private company to promise that it will not inspect or reorder orders. That makes it a stronger default defense than simply routing a clear payload through an intermediary, while leaving the user responsible for slippage, recipient checks, and application trust.

Bottom line for Aptos traders

Select the encrypted-mempool option for each eligible trade, verify that the wallet or SDK actually submits ciphertext, and keep your slippage and transaction limits conservative. The feature closes the classic pre-execution information channel behind many sandwich attacks, but it does not hide your address, guarantee execution price, or protect a cleartext fallback. For developers, Aptos TypeScript SDK 7.0.0 or later provides the documented client-side integration without requiring Move-contract changes.
