Turn the computer off immediately, unplug the charger and every external power source, and do not press keys or restart it. Blot liquid from the outside with a soft cloth, then follow the exact make-and-model instructions for positioning and drying. Manufacturer advice differs: Lenovo warns against turning a laptop over, while Dell’s general guidance says to tilt and drain it. Coffee can leave conductive or corrosive residue after the visible moisture disappears, so a computer that powers on is not automatically recovered.
What to do in the first minute
Speed matters because electricity and liquid can create short circuits. Lenovo’s user guide puts it plainly: “The more quickly you stop the current from passing through the computer the more likely you will reduce damage from short circuits.” That is a general caution, not a quantified guarantee, but it explains why trying to save a document before shutting down is a poor trade.

- Shut down immediately. Use the normal operating-system shutdown only if it happens instantly. Otherwise hold the power button as your model’s emergency-shutdown procedure specifies.
- Disconnect power. Unplug the charger from the wall and the computer. Remove docking-station power, USB power, monitors, and other connected accessories. If the battery is removable and the manufacturer provides a safe removal procedure, remove it; do not pry open a sealed battery compartment in a hurry.
- Stop interacting with the keyboard. Do not test keys, save files, wake the computer, or reconnect the charger. Every key press can move liquid farther into the switch assembly or circuit board.
- Blot the exterior. Use a soft, absorbent microfiber or lint-free cloth on the keyboard deck, palm rest, display bezel, and outside of the ports. Dab rather than scrub. Keep the cloth and any liquid out of openings.
- Check the model’s own spill instructions. Look up the manufacturer’s support page or printed manual using the exact model number. The correct orientation and drying period depend on the chassis design.
If the spill is still spreading, move the unplugged computer only as much as necessary to place it on a stable, protected surface. Avoid squeezing the keyboard, shaking the chassis, or carrying it with liquid running toward a port.

Water can evaporate without leaving much material behind. Coffee commonly contains dissolved solids, oils, sugar, milk proteins, and acids. The exact composition depends on the drink, but the practical issue is the same: a keyboard can look dry while residue remains under keycaps, membranes, connectors, or shields.

Intel’s older technical guidance treats coffee as a residue-producing spill. That guidance is useful for understanding why evaporation is not the same as cleaning; it should not replace current, model-specific manufacturer instructions. Residue can attract moisture from the air, become sticky, interfere with key contacts, and contribute to corrosion. A laptop that starts once may still develop intermittent keys, charging faults, or shutdowns later.
Positioning and drying: follow the exact model
There is no universal “turn every laptop upside down” method. Manufacturers describe different chassis designs and drainage paths. Use the instruction for your computer rather than combining advice from another brand.
| Source or device guidance | Positioning instruction | Drying instruction | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lenovo user-guide guidance | Do not turn the computer over to drain it; use built-in keyboard drainage holes where the model has them. | Wait until you are certain all liquid is dry. | No fixed number of hours is specified, and drying does not prove that coffee residue is gone. |
| Dell general support guidance | Tilt the laptop and drain as much liquid as possible. | Allow thorough drying for at least 24–48 hours. | The interval is a manufacturer recommendation, not a recovery-rate statistic or guarantee. |
| Apple guidance for a wet USB-C port alert | Keep the affected port facing safely away from additional moisture while following the device instructions. | Apple says to allow at least a day for the specified port condition. | This port-specific advice is not a universal keyboard-spill timer. |
These instructions appear to conflict because laptop interiors are not identical. A bottom panel, keyboard membrane, battery position, and drainage channel can change where liquid travels. If your manual says not to invert the machine, do not follow a generic upside-down recommendation. If it says to tilt and drain, use only the angles and precautions it describes.

Detailed recovery procedure
1. Isolate every source of electricity
Power is not limited to the wall charger. Disconnect USB-C power delivery, a dock, an external monitor that supplies power, and peripherals connected to powered hubs. Close the lid only if doing so does not spread liquid across the screen or hinge. A detachable keyboard should be unplugged from the computer and from its own charging cable before you clean it.
Do not assume that a sleeping computer is safe. Sleep, hibernation, and a black screen can leave energized circuits. Use a complete shutdown and leave the machine disconnected.

2. Remove only what the manual says you may remove
Some computers have removable batteries or manufacturer-approved access panels; many do not. If the user guide provides a battery-disconnect or emergency-reset procedure, follow it. Do not remove a sealed battery, pry at glued panels, or probe inside with a metal object. Opening a chassis can create additional damage and may affect service terms.
3. Blot, do not flush
Press a clean, soft cloth gently against accessible wet surfaces. Do not push paper towels, cotton swabs, cards, or cloth corners between keys or into vents and ports. Do not spray cleaner onto the computer. Apple’s exterior-cleaning guidance specifically says to keep moisture out of openings and not to spray liquid directly on the machine.
A microfiber cloth is useful for removing visible exterior liquid, but it cannot dry internal hardware or repair a contaminated keyboard. Replace the cloth when it becomes saturated instead of redistributing coffee across the deck.
4. Use the manufacturer-approved orientation
Read the support instructions for the exact model before changing its angle. Lenovo’s guidance relies on drainage holes on models designed with them and says not to turn the computer over. Dell’s general guidance calls for tilting and draining. Neither instruction should be presented as a rule for every laptop.

When a manual permits tilting, support the computer securely so it cannot slide or fall. Keep liquid away from the display hinge, ventilation openings, and ports. Do not shake it; shaking can drive coffee into deeper layers.
5. Leave it unpowered for the full drying period
Follow the stated interval and the stronger condition: the computer must be thoroughly dry. Dell recommends at least 24–48 hours of drying. Lenovo does not give a fixed interval and instead says to wait until all liquid is dry. A timer cannot establish that coffee trapped below a keyboard membrane or on a circuit board has evaporated or that residue is harmless.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the computer in a dry, well-ventilated room at normal indoor temperature. Do not place it on a radiator, in direct hot sunlight, or near a space heater. Do not use a hair dryer or heat gun.
Shortcuts that can make damage worse
- Do not power it on “just to check.” A brief successful boot does not show that all circuits are clean or stable.
- Do not use external heat. Heat can deform key mechanisms, damage batteries, loosen adhesives, and move liquid into other layers.
- Do not blow compressed air into the keyboard. Apple advises against compressed air for a wet Mac; airflow can force liquid and residue farther inside.
- Do not bury the computer in rice. Apple explicitly advises against rice. Rice dust and fragments can enter openings, while the rice does not remove residue from a circuit board.
- Do not pour alcohol or other cleaner into the keys. Apple’s permission for a cloth moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol concerns certain hard-to-remove marks on external surfaces. It is not permission to flood a keyboard or clean an internal board without the required equipment and procedure.
- Do not rinse a laptop under a tap. A water-resistant keyboard design is not the same as a waterproof computer, and adding liquid increases the area that must dry.
What to do after the drying period
Only attempt a restart when the manufacturer’s instructions allow it and there is no visible moisture. Reconnect the charger last, not first. If the model has a battery-disconnect procedure, restore power exactly as the manual describes.

- Inspect the keyboard deck, ports, vents, hinge, and underside under good light. Stop if you see moisture, sticky residue, discoloration, or liquid emerging from a port.
- Reconnect only the minimum equipment needed: the charger and, if required, an external display. Leave accessories disconnected during the first test.
- Start the computer once. Listen for abnormal sounds and watch for warning messages, flickering, unexpected shutdowns, or charging errors.
- If it reaches the operating system, test essential functions gently: several keys, the trackpad, charging, display, Wi-Fi, and USB ports. Do not repeatedly reboot to prove reliability.
- Back up important files immediately if the computer is stable. A backup protects your data; it does not mean the liquid damage is resolved.
Stop using the computer if any symptom appears. Continuing to operate a marginally working machine can increase corrosion and complicate later diagnosis.
Symptoms that require service
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider when coffee entered the chassis, reached a port, or produced any abnormal behavior. Service is particularly important when you notice:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Keys that do not register, repeat, feel sticky, or work only intermittently.
- Unexpected shutdowns, restarts, failure to wake, or a computer that will not boot.
- A charger that is not recognized, a battery that will not charge, or a warning about liquid in a port.
- Flickering, lines, distorted sound, a burning smell, unusual heat, or visible corrosion.
- Liquid emerging from a vent or port after the outside appears dry.
Tell the technician what spilled, approximately how much, where it landed, whether it contained milk or sugar, when the shutdown occurred, and every step you took afterward. That information helps determine whether the keyboard, charging circuitry, main board, or battery needs inspection.

Qualified independent repair provider
A reputable local provider may be practical for an older computer or a model outside its original service period. Ask whether the shop performs liquid-damage inspection and board-level cleaning, not just keyboard replacement. Provide the exact model and explain the spill route. Avoid any provider that promises recovery solely because the computer powers on or guarantees a success rate unsupported by comparable testing.
When replacement may be more sensible
Get a written diagnosis and estimate before approving extensive work. Replacement can be worth considering when the main board and display are both affected, parts are unavailable, or repair cost approaches the value of the computer. Preserve the storage drive or ask about secure data recovery if the files are not backed up, but do not keep powering a damaged machine to retrieve them.

Liquid exposure is often treated differently from a manufacturing defect. Apple’s US support information says liquid damage is not covered by the one-year limited warranty or AppleCare Protection Plan. An AppleCare plan for Mac can add accidental-damage protection subject to service fees, tax, and exclusions. Coverage varies by plan and region, so check the terms attached to your own device rather than assuming that a standard warranty pays for a spill.
Other manufacturers and retailers may use different definitions, deductibles, or inspection requirements. Record the model number, serial number, purchase information, and photos of visible damage before sending the computer for service. Do not conceal the spill or clean away evidence if a claim requires inspection.
Protecting a keyboard computer before the next spill
- Keep drinks on a separate, stable surface rather than beside the keyboard.
- Use a lidded container during travel, meetings, and crowded desks; a lid reduces spill probability but does not make a laptop waterproof.
- Keep a clean microfiber cloth accessible for blotting the exterior. Store it dry and use it only for surface cleanup.
- Enable automatic file backup and test that backups can be restored. Backups address data loss, not hardware damage.
- Learn the exact model number and locate its emergency-shutdown, battery, and liquid-spill instructions before an accident occurs.
- For a detachable keyboard, identify its power switch, charging connector, and manufacturer cleaning directions separately from the computer’s.
A keyboard cover can reduce the amount of liquid reaching some key gaps, but compatibility and ventilation vary by model. Do not assume a generic cover makes a computer spill-proof or follow a cover’s cleaning advice in place of the device manual.
A practical decision path
- Is the computer still powered? Shut it down and disconnect every power source now.
- Is liquid visible outside? Blot it gently without pushing anything into openings.
- Did coffee enter the keyboard, ports, vents, or chassis? Treat it as an internal spill and follow the model’s service and positioning instructions.
- Does the manual specify an orientation? Use that orientation; do not substitute another manufacturer’s rule.
- Has the required drying period passed and is the device visibly dry? Perform one cautious startup test only when the manufacturer permits it.
- Are there symptoms, residue, or uncertainty about internal exposure? Stop testing and arrange manufacturer or qualified professional inspection.
The safest outcome is not defined by whether the laptop boots once. It is defined by removing power quickly, avoiding actions that spread liquid, following the exact chassis instructions, and getting inspection when coffee may have reached internal components.
