The reliable pattern is to run each independently scalable microservice as a Nomad task group, expose only named ports, register every endpoint with health checks, and resolve dependencies through Nomad service discovery or Consul. Never configure one service with an allocation IP: Nomad may replace that allocation at any time. Instead, submit a declarative jobspec, let Nomad place the workloads on eligible Ubuntu clients, and use catalog-backed lookups to find the current healthy instances.

This guide covers the Ubuntu preparation, Docker-based jobspec structure, native Nomad discovery versus Consul, dependency templates, deployment verification, rescheduling behavior, and the operational settings that keep a small cluster dependable.

What Nomad contributes to a microservices deployment
Nomad is a declarative workload orchestrator for containers, binaries, and batch jobs. Its jobspec is the deployment contract: it describes what should run, where it may run, which resources it needs, which ports it exposes, and how Nomad should update and monitor it.
A microservice normally appears as a task inside a task group. The task selects a driver such as Docker, identifies an image or command, and declares CPU and memory resources. The group defines networking and can contain one or more closely coupled tasks. Separate groups can be scheduled, updated, and scaled independently, which is usually the right boundary for independently deployable services.

Why discovery is part of the design
Nomad placements are dynamic. A failed client, an update, or a reschedule can move a service to a different node and assign it a different address. Static hostnames or allocation IPs therefore become stale. Every service that calls another service needs a discovery mechanism that returns the current healthy address and port.
Nomad includes native service registration and lookup. For production systems, HashiCorp recommends integrating Consul, which adds a richer catalog, health-aware routing, DNS, service mesh, key-value storage, and ACL capabilities. Consul is separate software; it must be installed and operated alongside Nomad if you choose that design.

Reference architecture on Ubuntu
Use Ubuntu hosts with network connectivity between Nomad servers and clients. Servers maintain cluster state and schedule work; clients execute allocations. The documented Countdash example uses Ubuntu 22.04 on AMD64, which is a useful reference environment rather than a promise that every future Ubuntu release is supported. Confirm the currently supported Ubuntu releases and package instructions before production use.
- Nomad servers: form the scheduler and consensus cluster. Use the server count and failure-domain layout appropriate for your availability target.
- Nomad clients: run application allocations and must be able to reach the servers and any required registries, databases, and discovery agents.
- Docker runtime: required for Docker task groups. Install and enable the driver on every client that may receive those allocations.
- Discovery: use native Nomad discovery for a simple deployment, or run Consul agents and configure the Nomad–Consul integration for production-oriented service networking.
Prepare and validate Ubuntu hosts
- Choose a supported Ubuntu image and architecture. The Countdash documentation demonstrates Ubuntu 22.04 AMD64. Check current Nomad and Consul support before selecting another release or architecture.
- Provide connectivity and name resolution. Allow the Nomad server and client communication ports required by your chosen topology, and allow clients to reach the container registry and application dependencies. Keep server and client traffic on trusted networks.
- Install Nomad from the current Ubuntu instructions. Repository keys, package names, and service-unit details change over time, so use HashiCorp’s current installation page rather than copying an old command sequence.
- Configure server and client agents. Start the appropriate agent mode on each host, enable the system service, and verify that the client is eligible to run work before submitting application jobs.
- Install and validate Docker where required. The Docker driver must be available on every client selected for Docker allocations. Test that the Nomad client account can invoke the runtime and pull an image.
- Check cluster health. Use the Nomad CLI to confirm that servers are participating and that at least one client is ready and eligible. Do not deploy application jobs until the node status is healthy.
The tutorial prerequisite historically mentioned Nomad v1.3.3 or later. That is a tutorial-era minimum, not a current universal release recommendation; select a version supported by the current documentation and keep the server and client versions compatible.

Model each service in a jobspec
A jobspec can contain several groups, but keep independently released or scaled services in separate groups. A frontend may scale from two to ten instances without changing an API group, while a worker can use a different resource profile and update strategy.
Minimal Docker microservice example
job "shop" {
datacenters = ["dc1"]
group "api" {
count = 2
network {
port "http" { to = 8080 }
}
task "api" {
driver = "docker"
config {
image = "registry.example.invalid/shop-api:1.4.0"
ports = ["http"]
}
resources {
cpu = 500
memory = 512
}
service {
name = "shop-api"
provider = "nomad"
port = "http"
check {
type = "http"
path = "/health"
interval = "10s"
timeout = "2s"
}
}
}
}
}
The count value requests two allocations. The group network stanza gives the port a stable logical name, while Nomad maps it to the task’s port 8080. The resource limits participate in placement decisions; set them from measured application needs rather than treating them as decoration.
The service block registers the endpoint. A health check prevents an unready allocation from being treated as a usable instance. Add a service block for every endpoint that other jobs must discover, and use a distinct service name for each logical API, worker endpoint, or frontend.
Separating multiple services
Put an API and a frontend in separate groups when they need independent rollout or scaling. A database migration task that must run once can be modeled differently from a continuously serving API. The correct boundary is the unit you want Nomad to place, update, and scale as one.

Choose Nomad discovery or Consul
| Concern | Native Nomad discovery | Consul integration |
|---|---|---|
| Additional infrastructure | None beyond Nomad | Separate Consul agents and, normally, a Consul cluster |
| Good fit | Simple architectures, testing, and edge deployments | Production, multi-cloud, hybrid, and complex network environments |
| Lookup methods | Nomad catalog and the nomadService template function |
Consul catalog, DNS, and templates |
| Capabilities | Basic registration, lookup, and checks | Discovery, health-based routing, service mesh, KV, and ACL features |
Native Nomad discovery
Set provider = "nomad" in each service block. This keeps the deployment self-contained and avoids operating another control plane. It is often sufficient for a small cluster or an edge installation where the main requirement is finding healthy allocations.
Consul integration
Consul is not bundled invisibly inside Nomad. Install and configure Consul agents or a Consul cluster beside the Nomad servers and clients, then configure the integration and credentials. Consul is the default provider in many Nomad–Consul configurations, but verify your actual agent configuration instead of assuming the provider.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose Consul when you need its broader catalog and routing behavior, DNS-based clients, service mesh, or ACL and KV features. The trade-off is another distributed system to secure, upgrade, monitor, and back up.
Connect dependencies without hard-coded addresses
Render a native Nomad lookup
Nomad templates can render the address and port of a registered service. A task can write a configuration file before startup and reload it according to the application’s capabilities.

template {
data = <<-EOF
API_URL=http://{{ range nomadService "shop-api" }}{{ .Address }}:{{ .Port }}{{ end }}
EOF
destination = "local/env"
env = true
}
The exact template shape depends on whether the application expects an environment variable, a URL, or a structured configuration file. If several healthy instances are returned, implement client-side balancing or use a local proxy appropriate to your architecture.
Use Consul catalog data when Consul is selected
With Consul, resolve the service through the Consul catalog, DNS, or a Consul-aware template. Keep the service name and health policy consistent across jobs. Do not mix an unregistered hostname with a registered service and expect rescheduling to repair it.
Why allocation IPs are unsafe
An allocation IP identifies one placement, not the service itself. When Nomad replaces that allocation, the old address may disappear while the catalog records a new healthy instance. Catalog-backed resolution is the mechanism that lets callers follow that change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Submit, inspect, and verify a deployment
- Validate the file locally. Check HCL syntax and review the image, datacenter, resource, port, service, and check settings before submission.
- Submit the jobspec. Use the Nomad CLI, for example
nomad job run shop.nomad.hcl. Keep the jobspec under version control so every deployment is reproducible. - Inspect deployment progress. Run
nomad job status shopand inspect allocations, placement failures, health, and rollout state. A submitted job is not necessarily a successfully serving job. - Inspect allocation details and logs. Identify the allocation ID, review task events, and read stdout and stderr when an image fails to pull, a port cannot bind, or a health check remains critical.
- Query the service catalog. Confirm that each expected service is registered with the intended provider and that its check is passing. With Consul, inspect the Consul catalog and health view; with native discovery, use Nomad's service view.
- Exercise the dependency path. Call the frontend or API through its discovered endpoint and verify that it can resolve and reach its downstream service, not merely that the process is running.
HashiCorp's HashiCups tutorial follows this pattern with several Docker microservices and an additional frontend instance used for load balancing. The important operational sequence is registration, health verification, catalog lookup, and an end-to-end request.
Best Value
Rescheduling and rollout behavior
After a client failure or deliberate replacement, Nomad creates a new allocation according to the jobspec. The new task receives a new placement and may receive a different port mapping. The service registration and health check must complete before callers treat it as ready.
Use update settings suited to the application: a stateless HTTP API may tolerate a rolling replacement, while a singleton or stateful process may require serialization and explicit availability safeguards. There is no universal rollout policy. Watch failed allocations and verify dependency resolution after every replacement, not only after the initial deployment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Health-aware routing
Health checks should represent readiness to serve the dependency, not merely process liveness. An HTTP check should return success only after the application has initialized the resources required for requests. Health-aware catalogs allow clients or routing components to avoid unhealthy allocations and distribute traffic among passing instances.
Troubleshooting checklist
- No eligible clients: confirm the client agent is running, marked eligible, in the requested datacenter, and has sufficient CPU, memory, and driver support.
- Image pull failures: verify registry reachability, image spelling and tag, and credentials on every candidate client.
- Port or bind errors: check that the named port is declared in the group network stanza and that the application listens on the address and port Nomad supplies.
- Service missing from the catalog: confirm the service block is nested under the task, the provider matches your configured integration, and the allocation reached a running state.
- Check remains critical: test the health path from the client host, verify startup timing, and increase the interval or timeout only when the application's real initialization time justifies it.
- Calls fail after rescheduling: remove cached allocation addresses, render the dependency through the catalog template or Consul mechanism, and restart or reload the caller so it consumes the new endpoint.
- Consul lookups fail: verify that Consul agents are installed on the intended hosts, can communicate with one another, and that Nomad has the required integration configuration and credentials.
Security and operational hygiene
- Keep Nomad and Consul control-plane traffic on private, authenticated networks and restrict administrative APIs.
- Use image tags that identify an immutable release policy, and record the jobspec revision with each deployment.
- Give tasks only the CPU, memory, filesystem, and network access they require.
- Store registry credentials and application secrets through the secret-management mechanism appropriate to your environment rather than committing them to the jobspec.
- Monitor allocation failures, health-check transitions, scheduler events, and client capacity so a placement problem is visible before it becomes an outage.
A practical decision rule
Start with native Nomad discovery when you need straightforward service registration without another infrastructure dependency and your clients can consume Nomad template output. Select Consul when your organization needs a shared, health-aware catalog across environments or plans to use DNS, service mesh, KV, or ACL features. In either case, the deployment contract is the jobspec, and the non-negotiable rule is the same: discover services by name and health, never by a remembered allocation address.
