Choose the right option for your goal: use your organization’s approved VPN for work or school access, consider a consumer VPN for a specific routing or IP-privacy need, or use iCloud Private Relay for its narrower Safari-privacy role. Each option has a different scope and trust model.
What a VPN does—and what it does not do
An active VPN creates an encrypted connection from your iPhone to a VPN endpoint, then routes eligible traffic onward. This can keep the local network from seeing the contents of traffic protected by the tunnel and can make destination services see the VPN endpoint’s IP address rather than your network’s address. The VPN provider becomes a new intermediary: it controls how traffic is routed after it leaves your device and may be able to see, intercept, or modify online activity. Apple explains this trade-off in its VPNs & Privacy guidance, dated December 12, 2025.

A VPN does not make you anonymous, guarantee that every connection uses the tunnel, secure an account against phishing, or turn an unencrypted service into end-to-end encrypted communication. Apple notes that some app connections can be excluded from an active VPN, and some essential system and local-network traffic is not routed through it.

Work or school resources
Use the VPN app or profile approved by your organization, and follow its setup instructions. Managed deployments can apply policy-based routing, including per-app VPN for managed traffic. Apple also documents Always On VPN for supervised, managed iOS devices; it is not a setting a user can simply enable in an ordinary consumer VPN app. Depending on the deployment, an organization may route all IP traffic through its network and apply monitoring or filtering controls. Consumer VPN routing or IP privacy
A consumer VPN may suit a defined need to route eligible traffic through a provider or to present a different IP address to destination services. Before installing it, decide whether you are comfortable making that provider a trusted intermediary. Do not assume that an app listing or a connected indicator proves that every iPhone connection is covered.
Safari privacy with iCloud Private Relay
Private Relay is an iCloud+ service designed to split requests between two separate relays. Apple says it protects Safari browsing, DNS queries, and unencrypted traffic; it is not a commercial VPN that routes all iPhone app traffic. A VPN configuration, when active, determines routing for internet connections that otherwise would be protected by Private Relay. Apple describes the service and its scope in its iCloud Private Relay privacy documentation. CISA’s guidance describes its benefit as limited to Safari.

Set up a VPN on iPhone
The safest setup source is the provider’s current iOS instructions or your organization’s IT administrator. Apple says you can install a preferred VPN configuration from the App Store, or add one manually. Exact labels may vary by iOS version, provider app, and management policy.
- For a provider app: Install the app from the App Store, then follow its instructions to add and approve the VPN configuration. Review the provider’s privacy practices before granting this network access.
- For manual configuration: Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN > Add VPN Configuration. Enter the server, account, and protocol details supplied by your provider or IT administrator; do not guess these values.
- For a managed work or school device: Use the profile, app, or enrollment process supplied by IT. Ask the administrator which traffic the VPN covers and whether the device is managed or supervised.
- After setup: Confirm the VPN shows as connected, then check the provider’s instructions for how it handles connection failures and network changes. A connected status alone does not establish that every app or system connection is tunneled.
Apple documents IKEv2/IPsec and app-based SSL VPN among supported approaches. Managed options such as VPN On Demand, per-app VPN, and Always On VPN depend on the organization’s device-management configuration.

How to evaluate a consumer VPN
Compare providers against the traffic and trust decision you actually need, rather than choosing by a broad claim such as “total protection.”
- Data handling: Read the privacy policy for what connection, account, and diagnostic data is collected or retained. Look for independent evidence supporting relevant claims; an unverified claim is not proof of how a service operates.
- Traffic coverage: Check which iOS traffic the app routes, how it handles network changes or disconnections, and whether any app or system traffic may bypass the tunnel.
- Compatibility: Confirm support for your iOS version and protocol, and consider how the VPN interacts with Private Relay or other network tools.
- Use case: Consumer privacy and organizational access are different jobs. On a managed work device, your administrator’s policy takes precedence over a consumer feature checklist.
- Commercial terms: Review current pricing, renewal terms, and cancellation conditions directly with the provider before subscribing.
Keep other iPhone protections in place
A VPN covers only part of a security and privacy plan. CISA’s Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance, published as of December 18, 2024, is aimed at highly targeted individuals. It recommends keeping mobile operating systems and apps updated, reviewing sensitive app permissions, using end-to-end encrypted communications, and preferring phishing-resistant FIDO authentication where feasible. CISA also distinguishes a VPN required by an organization from a personal VPN.

In that specific high-risk guidance, CISA warns: “Personal VPNs simply shift residual risks from your internet service provider (ISP) to the VPN provider, often increasing the attack surface.” The point is not that every consumer VPN is unsafe; it is that a VPN changes who may handle your traffic and does not eliminate other risks.
