To stop unauthorized viewers from opening a live stream, require sign-in and check each viewer’s entitlement, then issue short-lived playback credentials that the CDN validates. Keep the media origin private, use HTTPS, and add geographic restrictions when rights require them. For premium content, DRM can add encryption and license controls—but no combination can guarantee that an authorized viewer will not capture or redistribute what they can see.
How do I stop people from watching my live stream without permission?
Do not treat an unlisted or hard-to-guess watch link as access control. If a public manifest or media origin URL can be discovered or shared, someone may be able to fetch the stream directly. AWS advises against exposing an origin directly and warns that signed credentials should not remain valid too long (AWS Streaming Media Lens anti-patterns).
Build protection as a chain: authenticate viewers, check what each account is allowed to watch, grant temporary playback access, enforce that access at the delivery edge, and prevent requests from bypassing the edge to reach the origin. Use HTTPS throughout. Add encryption and DRM when the content’s value or licensing terms justify their added integration work.
How to set up protected playback
- Authenticate and authorize in your application. Require sign-in where appropriate, then check the viewer’s entitlement for the specific event or content before granting playback. A logged-in account alone is not proof that it should be allowed to watch every stream.
- Issue temporary playback credentials from a trusted backend. Use a signed URL for a resource, or a signed cookie or token when access needs to cover multiple resources or a session. Set an expiry that fits the viewing session and grant only the necessary content scope. Never put a long-lived shared secret in page or player code. CloudFront documents signed URLs and cookies for private content (CloudFront private content); AWS also describes temporary signed credentials and JWT-based patterns (AWS Streaming Media Lens).
- Validate access on the delivery path. Check credentials at the CDN or edge for playback requests, including manifests and media segments—not just when the player page loads. Cloudflare Stream’s signed URL option requires a signed token to view or download protected video; when it is enabled, the video ID alone no longer makes the video publicly viewable (Cloudflare Stream signed URLs). CloudFront can also enforce signed access to content it serves.
- Make the origin reachable only through the authorized route. Configure the media origin to accept requests from the intended CDN or another controlled path, rather than directly from arbitrary viewers. Otherwise, a viewer may bypass CDN token checks or geographic restrictions. AWS identifies direct origin exposure as a security anti-pattern (AWS Streaming Media Lens anti-patterns).
- Use HTTPS and apply geography deliberately. Protect playback requests in transit with HTTPS. If territorial rights or policy require a geographic restriction, enforce it on the actual delivery path and verify that direct-origin access cannot evade it. CloudFront lists HTTPS and geographic restrictions among its content-restriction controls (CloudFront restricting access).
- For high-value content, assess DRM with your real devices and player. Confirm supported protocols, packaging, encryption schemes, player coverage, and who operates the keys and licenses. Google’s Live Stream API can encrypt streams for documented DRM configurations, but a third-party DRM provider must create and manage keys and licenses (Google Live Stream API content encryption). Apple describes FairPlay as protecting HLS streaming media on Apple platforms through encryption and secure key exchange (Apple FairPlay Streaming). AWS SPEKE guidance covers DRM packaging and license-server integration requirements (AWS SPEKE). These are specific integrations, not evidence of universal compatibility.
- Test before the event. From a browser or client outside an authorized session, try an anonymous request, an expired token, a revoked entitlement, and a direct-origin request; then verify that an entitled viewer can play normally. Check manifests as well as segments. This operational checklist helps expose gaps in the actual configuration.
Choose credentials and delivery controls that fit the stream

Cloudflare Stream and CloudFront are not interchangeable. Cloudflare Stream is a managed video service with documented signed-video access; CloudFront is a CDN whose private-content controls need to be integrated with the application and origin architecture. Cloudflare’s documented signed URL method does not support Live WebRTC (Cloudflare Stream signed URLs).

What protection can and cannot guarantee
Authentication, expiring credentials, edge validation, and private origins can prevent unauthorized clients from obtaining playback through the paths you control. DRM adds encryption and license checks for supported playback systems. These measures do not guarantee that an authorized viewer cannot share account access, record a screen, or redistribute what they can see. Treat access controls as layered risk reduction, not a promise that piracy is impossible.
Common problems and fixes
- A protected player page still allows playback without signing in: the page may be protected while the manifest or segments remain public. Require credentials on the media requests themselves and validate them at the edge.
- CDN rules appear correct, but the stream is still accessible: check whether the origin can be requested directly. Restrict origin access so the CDN is the authorized route.
- Legitimate viewers suddenly get access errors: inspect token expiry, clock assumptions, content scope, and whether the player can request every required manifest and segment while credentials remain valid. Adjust the credential lifetime or renewal flow to match the session without making access unnecessarily long-lived.
- Geographic restrictions are bypassed: confirm that restrictions are enforced on the delivery path and cannot be avoided through a direct-origin request.
- DRM playback fails on some devices: verify that the device, player, stream packaging, encryption configuration, and license service match the specific supported integration. Do not assume one DRM setup covers every platform.
