SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) moves live audio and video between compatible endpoints over an IP network. It is designed to handle packet loss and jitter through retransmission, latency management and, where configured, other recovery options. It can help preserve a clean contribution feed on an unpredictable network, but it cannot guarantee delivery over an impaired path or eliminate the delay needed to recover lost data.

What SRT is—and where it fits

SRT is a transport protocol, not a video codec, encoder or complete production platform. It carries media between processing endpoints—for example, from a field encoder to a receiver or distribution system. The media is encoded and decoded by other parts of the workflow; SRT handles its transport across the IP path. Haivision’s SRT introduction describes SRT as detecting and adapting to real-time network conditions between endpoints.

Both ends of the connection need compatible SRT support and appropriate configuration. The protocol alone does not create a live production, choose a codec, or make an unsupported receiver compatible.

How SRT recovers from network problems

ARQ retransmits missing data

The SRT project identifies Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) as its primary loss-recovery method. The receiver detects missing packets and requests that the sender retransmit them. If the retransmitted data arrives in time for playback, the receiver can use it to repair the feed. This requires a return path for requests and enough time in the configured latency budget for the data to make the round trip. The Haivision-maintained SRT project README describes ARQ and the protocol’s other recovery mechanisms.

Latency provides room for recovery

SRT manages latency and jitter so that packets do not have to be played immediately on arrival. That buffer can give retransmissions time to arrive and help smooth variation in packet arrival. The trade-off is that more time for recovery means more delay. If the path is too impaired, or the available budget is too tight, packets may not arrive in time; SRT does not guarantee a perfect feed or unlimited recovery.

FEC and bonding are additional choices

The project README also lists Forward Error Correction (FEC) and connection bonding. They address different recovery and redundancy needs, but their presence in the project does not mean they are active in every stream or available in every device. Check the capabilities and configuration of both endpoints before relying on either.

What “low latency” means in practice

The SRT project characterizes the protocol as a sub-second live transport protocol. That is a description of the protocol class, not a promise of a particular end-to-end or glass-to-glass delay in every workflow. Encoding, decoding, SRT buffering, routing, congestion and receiver processing all contribute to total delay. The appropriate SRT latency setting depends on network behavior and how much delay the production can tolerate; there is no universal setting supported by the cited documentation.

Reliability and immediacy are in tension: retransmissions can repair loss when time remains, while a very tight latency limit leaves less time for recovery. Evaluate the expected loss and jitter, available bandwidth headroom, required redundancy and the full production delay—not just the transport setting.

What SRT encryption protects

SRT supports AES encryption for media-stream payloads between configured endpoints. This protects the media payload in transit; it does not automatically secure endpoint computers, credentials, management interfaces or every other part of a broadcast workflow. Use sound endpoint security and access controls, and configure and protect any encryption passphrase or key according to the implementation’s documentation. Haivision’s SRT product overview also describes encryption for contribution and distribution.

How to evaluate an SRT implementation

  • Endpoint support: Confirm that both sending and receiving equipment or software support SRT and interoperate with the settings your workflow requires.
  • Delay tolerance: Determine the total delay the production can accept, including encoding, decoding and downstream buffers, before choosing a latency budget.
  • Network conditions: Assess expected packet loss, jitter, congestion and bandwidth variation on the actual path. Recovery mechanisms cannot overcome a path that lacks adequate capacity or time.
  • Recovery and redundancy: Decide whether ARQ meets the use case or whether FEC or path redundancy is needed, then verify that both endpoints support the chosen approach.
  • Security configuration: Check how encryption is enabled and how passphrases or keys are exchanged, stored and restricted.
  • Software or hardware: Consider whether software endpoints fit the workflow or whether dedicated encoding and decoding equipment is required. Choose based on compatibility and operational needs, not the protocol name alone.

For a hardware example, Haivision documents SRT support on Makito X Series encoders and decoders. The SRT project repository provides an open-source library and sample utilities, including srt-live-transmit. Verify current device and software documentation before deployment; support for SRT does not establish that two particular products interoperate at every setting.

Keep a YouTube channel live without running SRT equipment at home

SRT is for transporting media between compatible endpoints; it is not a service for continuously looping uploaded videos to YouTube. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than a contribution link between production endpoints, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only.

Troubleshooting common SRT problems

The endpoints do not connect

  • Confirm that both endpoints support SRT and that the sender’s and receiver’s connection settings match the intended workflow.
  • Check network reachability and any firewall or routing rules between the endpoints. SRT support on one device is not enough if the other end cannot be reached or does not support the connection.
  • Consult the documentation for the exact software or hardware version in use; labels and supported options can vary by implementation.

The receiver still shows loss or artifacts

  • Check whether the network has enough bandwidth headroom and whether loss or jitter is exceeding what the configured recovery time can accommodate.
  • Review the latency budget. A receiver may not have enough time to use retransmitted packets if its deadline is too tight for the path.
  • Confirm whether ARQ is enabled and whether both endpoints support any intended FEC or bonding configuration; do not assume optional mechanisms are active by default.

The feed is clean but arrives too late

  • Review the entire chain—encoder, SRT buffering, routing, receiver, decoder and downstream buffers—to identify where delay is accumulating.
  • Reducing the recovery window may lower transport delay, but it also leaves less time for retransmissions. Test changes against real network conditions and the production’s tolerance for interruption.

Encryption is expected but not in use

  • Verify encryption settings at both endpoints and confirm that the required credentials or passphrase are configured consistently.
  • Protect those credentials and the endpoint systems themselves; payload encryption does not secure the rest of the workflow.

Check current version-specific documentation

Haivision’s documentation index identifies the displayed protocol documentation as version 1.5.3 and says version 1.5.4 is latest; the index page was updated on 2026-02-13. Version and availability details can change, so consult the Haivision SRT documentation index and the documentation for your particular endpoints when implementing or troubleshooting.
