You can start a YouTube live stream from the YouTube app: make sure your channel meets the mobile requirements, tap Create > Live, set up the stream, and tap Go live. Before you start, choose portrait or landscape, check your connection, charge your phone, and test privately or unlisted if possible.
1. Check that your channel can go live from mobile
YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements include at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a supported device. YouTube lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later. You may need to wait up to 24 hours after enabling live streaming before your first mobile stream becomes available. Check YouTube’s current mobile live-streaming requirements before an event, since platform rules can change.

YouTube’s general live-streaming rules also require streamers to be at least 16. If your channel has an active restriction, switching to another channel is not a legitimate workaround.

Channels with 50–999 subscribers may have a viewer limit, and their live-stream archives default to private. YouTube says that after a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, removing the audience limitation may take several weeks; reaching the threshold does not necessarily remove it immediately.

2. Set up the stream and check who can see it
- Open the YouTube app and tap Create > Live.
- Enter a clear title and the other stream details. Choose the visibility and audience settings that fit the stream.
- Start now by tapping Go live, or schedule the stream for later if that option is available.
- When the stream is over, tap Finish. Review the resulting archive and change its visibility or delete it if needed.
For a rehearsal, use Practice Mode if it is available on your account; YouTube is rolling out this private practice feature, so it may not appear for everyone. An unlisted test is another way to check framing, sound, and connection before a public event. Confirm the visibility setting before sharing a link: an unlisted stream is not the same as a public one.
3. Choose portrait or landscape before going live
Decide how viewers should see the scene before you start. A vertical, 9:16 stream can appear full-screen in YouTube’s mobile vertical live experience and may be encountered while viewers browse Shorts. Landscape, 16:9, generally gives you more room for a wide scene and can suit viewers watching on computers or TVs. Choose based on the subject and audience rather than assuming one format is best for every stream.

YouTube’s phone-app workflow is different from the Live Control Room’s dual-format setup. In Live Control Room, eligible workflows can include horizontal and vertical versions with layout choices such as center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. YouTube says a vertical stream cannot be added after a stream has started, so make the format decision in advance.

4. Prepare the phone, power, and connection
- Charge before you start. YouTube estimates that “1% phone battery is used per 1 minute of stream,” but actual drain varies by device and conditions. A power bank can help during a longer stream.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb. This reduces interruptions from calls and notifications during the broadcast.
- Lock the intended orientation. Set the phone to portrait or landscape, then use rotation lock so the frame does not change unexpectedly.
- Test the network where you will stream. Check the connection from the actual location, not just at home or in another room. If it is unreliable, move closer to the access point or choose a more dependable connection before going live.
5. Make the picture and sound easier to watch
Choose a camera and framing
The rear camera generally gives better visuals; the front camera makes it easier to see the stream and chat while you broadcast. If you have a second device, you can use the rear camera on the streaming phone and monitor chat on the other device. Keep the phone stable and frame the subject with the chosen portrait or landscape format in mind.

Use simple, soft lighting
Face a window or use soft, even light where possible. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can create strong shadows or make the image uncomfortable to view.
Keep the microphone unobstructed
Stay close enough to the phone for clear speech and avoid covering its microphone. In a loud environment, YouTube suggests considering an external microphone. Check that any microphone you choose is compatible with your phone; an extra accessory is optional, not a requirement for going live.

6. Promote the stream and make use of the archive
If the event is scheduled, YouTube recommends sharing its link at least 48 hours in advance. Afterward, check the archive’s visibility and decide whether it should remain available, be changed, or be deleted.
Some eligible mobile streams may offer a Short highlight. YouTube’s stated criteria include a vertical stream made with the YouTube mobile app, a duration of 10 minutes to 12 hours, chat enabled, not a screencast, not marked Made for Kids, and compliance with safety standards. The option is not guaranteed for every account or stream, so check whether it appears after the broadcast. See YouTube’s guidance on promoting a live stream.

Troubleshoot before the event
- The Live option is missing: Check subscriber eligibility, channel verification, whether live streaming is enabled, any recent restrictions, and whether the app and device meet YouTube’s requirements. For a first stream, allow up to 24 hours after activation.
- You cannot reach the intended audience: Review visibility and audience settings before going live. For a test, select an appropriate private or unlisted option rather than assuming the stream is hidden.
- The stream is framed the wrong way: Stop and correct orientation before starting the real broadcast. Decide on portrait or landscape in advance; YouTube says a vertical stream cannot be added after the stream begins.
- The phone is losing power or overheating: Start with a charged device, reduce avoidable interruptions, and use a power bank if needed. Actual battery use depends on the phone and streaming conditions.
- Viewers cannot hear clearly: Check that the phone microphone is not covered, move closer to it, and reduce background noise. Consider a compatible external mic only if the environment calls for one.
