For a straightforward RTMP server on Windows, Linux, or macOS, use MediaMTX: download the release for your operating system and CPU, extract it, and run the executable. Then point OBS at rtmp://localhost/mystream for a local test. You do not need Docker for that basic setup; use its documented container method when you want a more managed deployment.
Choose a setup method
| Method | Best suited to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| MediaMTX standalone | A first test or a simple server on a machine you control | MediaMTX documents Linux, Windows, and macOS support and distributes a single executable without a dependency or interpreter requirement. [MediaMTX introduction] |
| MediaMTX with Docker | A container-based or more managed deployment | MediaMTX recommends its Docker method for production environments. Its example maps RTMP on TCP port 1935 and includes ports for other protocols; expose only the ones you use. [MediaMTX installation] |
| NGINX with RTMP | A project that specifically needs an NGINX-based stack | The current NGINX documentation available for this option covers the NGINX Plus RTMP dynamic module. The sources do not establish a controlled performance or latency comparison with MediaMTX. [NGINX RTMP module documentation] |
The instructions below use MediaMTX standalone because it has a documented path for all three desktop operating systems. You can test it locally with OBS before deciding whether you need Docker, remote access, or another protocol.

Set up MediaMTX on Windows, Linux, or macOS
1. Download the matching release
- Open the MediaMTX project and release information.
- Choose the release artifact matching both your operating system and CPU architecture, then extract the downloaded archive.
- Keep the extracted executable and its accompanying files together. The project provides an example Linux archive name in its installation instructions; artifact names and available builds can change, so check the current release list rather than relying on an old filename.
2. Start the server
- Windows: double-click
mediamtx.exe. - Linux or macOS: open a terminal in the extracted directory and run
./mediamtx.
For a first local test, leave the default configuration in place. MediaMTX supports several streaming protocols; RTMP uses TCP port 1935 in the project’s Docker example. If you need to change a port or other setting, consult the configuration file and current installation documentation before editing it. [MediaMTX installation]

Keep the process open while you test. If it exits or reports that a port is already in use, another service may be occupying that listener; inspect the error and resolve the conflict before trying again. The exact shell, service manager, and macOS security-dialog steps are not prescribed by the cited setup instructions, so they can differ by system configuration.

Publish a test stream from OBS
MediaMTX documents a direct OBS test using a custom streaming service and a local RTMP URL. [MediaMTX OBS publishing instructions]
- Start MediaMTX and leave it running.
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Stream.
- Set the service to Custom….
- Enter
rtmp://localhost/mystreamin the Server field. - Leave Stream key empty, save the settings, and choose Start Streaming.
The stream path in this example is /mystream. Here, localhost means the computer running OBS itself. To publish from a different device on your local network, use the server computer’s reachable address in place of localhost; that also requires the network and host firewall to allow the connection.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Run MediaMTX in Docker
Docker is the documented alternative when you want an isolated, repeatable deployment; MediaMTX recommends this method for production environments. Its example maps 1935:1935 for RTMP and maps additional ports for other supported services, including RTSP, HLS, and WebRTC. Do not assume every mapped port is necessary: publish only the protocols you intend to use, and follow the current official instructions for the command, image, environment variables, and WebRTC address handling. [MediaMTX Docker installation]
Secure access beyond your own computer
A local-only test is different from a server reachable by other devices or over the public internet. Before allowing wider access, decide who should be able to publish or read streams and configure the host firewall, router, or cloud firewall deliberately. Restrict permitted sources where practical and do not expose credentials in public places. These are deployment precautions, not a universal firewall recipe; the right rules depend on where the server runs and which protocols you use.

Encryption and credentials
MediaMTX documents RTMPS configuration using a TLS certificate and key. Its authentication documentation also describes RTMP username-and-password or token query parameters. Treat URLs containing credentials or tokens as secrets, since anyone who obtains them may be able to use them. [MediaMTX RTMP documentation] [MediaMTX authentication documentation]
MediaMTX’s RTMP-specific documentation notes that RTMPS is not supported by most major players. Check the compatibility of the particular publisher and reader you plan to use before making encrypted RTMP a requirement. [MediaMTX RTMP documentation]

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- OBS cannot connect to the local server: make sure MediaMTX is still running, use
rtmp://localhost/mystreamwhen OBS is on the same machine, and verify that the RTMP listener is available on TCP port 1935. - Another device cannot publish: replace
localhostwith the server computer’s reachable LAN address. Check that the device can reach that address and that the host firewall permits the connection. - The executable will not start: check that you downloaded the build for the correct operating system and CPU architecture and extracted the archive before launching it.
- The server reports a port conflict: another process may already be using the relevant listener. Identify and resolve that conflict, or consult the current MediaMTX configuration instructions before changing the port.
- RTMPS does not work with a publisher or player: confirm that the software supports RTMPS and that the server’s TLS certificate and key are configured as required.
- A public endpoint is reachable by unintended users: review authentication and firewall rules, restrict allowed sources where possible, and rotate credentials or tokens that may have been exposed.
Understand what an RTMP server does—and does not do
MediaMTX describes itself as a portable server and proxy supporting RTMP among its publishing and reading protocols. An RTMP server receives or relays a stream; setting one up does not by itself create a YouTube live stream or make a computer stay online continuously. [MediaMTX introduction]

For a local OBS test, no particular paid hosting service or streaming accessory is required. If you later need an endpoint reachable while your own computer is off, a hosted server is one possible deployment choice; local use does not require paid hosting.
