Keep the factory-installed inner screen film in place, keep grit and hard objects away from the open display, and check both the screen and hinge area before folding. Close the phone gently; never force the hinge. These habits reduce avoidable risks, but they do not make a foldable dustproof or prevent damage from an object trapped between its panels.
Why a foldable’s inner screen needs extra care
A book-style foldable’s flexible inner display is softer and more vulnerable to pressure and sharp objects than the rigid glass typically used on a conventional phone. Google’s Pixel Fold safety guide warns that the flexible screen can be damaged by items such as crumbs, fingernails and sharp objects. Samsung gives similar cautions in its US foldable care guidance.

When the phone is open, keep pens, keys, coins, grit and anything pointed away from the display. Avoid pressing hard with a fingertip or fingernail, and do not treat the inner screen like a surface for writing or placing objects.
Before folding, check the screen and hinge
Look over the inner display and the area around the hinge before closing the phone. A card, coin, key or small particle caught between the halves can scratch or puncture the main screen when the phone folds.

- Move loose objects away from the display before folding.
- If you see grit or debris, remove it gently rather than pressing or rubbing it into the screen.
- Bring the two halves together normally. Do not push past the fully open position or force the hinge if it resists.
Samsung’s care instructions specifically say to check for cards, coins or keys between the screens and warn that sharp objects can scratch or puncture the main display. Google likewise advises checking for objects or fine particles on the screen and in the hinge before closing.
Leave the factory inner film in place
The pre-installed inner film is part of the phone’s intended screen protection. Samsung says, “Your Galaxy foldable phone comes with a specially designed screen protector pre-installed on the main screen.” Do not peel it off, add an unapproved third-party film, or attach stickers or other adhesive accessories to the inner display.
If the factory film lifts, bubbles or needs replacement, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for instructions specific to your model. Samsung recommends authorized service for replacement and says damage caused by user or unauthorized removal is excluded from its stated Standard Limited Warranty. Google also advises against removing the pre-installed film or applying a third-party screen protector, and recommends professional assistance for repairs. Warranty terms and service options can vary by model and market.

Clean the display and hinge gently
Inner display and exterior
Use a soft, lint-free cloth and light pressure. Google recommends a dry cloth for dust and smudges; for certain color transfer, its Pixel Fold guide permits a slightly damp cloth. It warns against solvents and abrasive cleaners. Follow the cleaning instructions for your exact device, and do not apply liquid directly to the screen.
Hinge area
Samsung advises gently wiping a dusty or dirty hinge with a soft, dry cloth. The official guidance cited here does not recommend inserting brushes, picks, paper or other objects into the hinge, or using compressed air there. Avoid probing the mechanism; if debris appears lodged inside or the hinge does not move normally, consult the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Dust and water ratings are model-specific
A foldable’s water rating does not mean it is dustproof, and a rating should not be generalized from one model to another. Google says the original Pixel Fold is not dust resistant. Its IPX8 water resistance applies when the device leaves the factory, is not waterproofing, and may diminish over time through wear, repair, disassembly or damage.

Samsung’s US guidance distinguishes among Galaxy foldable models and says no Galaxy foldable listed on that page is dust resistant. Samsung’s Philippines guidance discusses IPX8 for specified older model families; that information should not be applied to every Galaxy foldable. Check your exact model’s current manual and care page before relying on a water or dust rating. Even a water-resistant device should be kept away from grit, and a rating does not protect the inner display from debris trapped between the panels.

Choose a case for the exact model
A compatible case can help protect the outer surfaces. Some designs also cover the hinge, but coverage is a feature of the case—not a guarantee that particles cannot enter the hinge or that the inner screen is protected from something caught between the folded halves.

- fits that model and leaves buttons, ports and controls usable;
- covers the hinge or only the outer shell;
- adds bulk that you are comfortable carrying; and
- is compatible with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Samsung provides model-dependent case fitting guidance, but the manufacturer information cited here does not establish comparative performance for third-party cases. A case should complement careful handling, not replace checking the display before folding.
Understand normal hinge movement—and when to get help
Some movement or subtle visual differences may be characteristics of a particular hinge design rather than proof of damage. Samsung’s Korea support article, dated 2026-07-24, describes its Flex hinge on specified Galaxy Z Fold5–Z Fold8 and Z Flip5–Z Flip8 families. It notes that slight movement in some positions, minor frame-height differences and a subtle appearance around the fold can be normal for those models. It also warns that force beyond the fully open position can damage the device.
