Foldables need this discipline because their inner displays are softer than conventional phone glass and their hinges have moving clearances that can be affected by debris. Water-resistance labels also describe controlled laboratory conditions, not immunity to beaches, pools, pressure, wear or contaminated water.

Why a foldable needs different protection
A foldable combines a flexible inner display, a crease, a hinge and two housing halves that meet when closed. Each part creates a different failure path. A fingernail or pen can mark the softer display surface; pressure from an object trapped in the fold can scratch or puncture it; fine sand can work into the hinge; and forcing the hinge beyond its designed motion can damage both the mechanism and the panel.

Set up protection before the first day of use
Choose a case made for the exact model
Buy a case identified for the precise phone and generation, not merely for a screen size or a family name. Samsung provides model-specific case guidance, and Motorola recommends a case that accommodates the Razr Fold’s folding movement. The case should protect the outer frame and corners while leaving the hinge free to move through its full range.
- Check that both halves close completely without rubbing, lifting or leaving a visible gap caused by the case.
- Run a finger along the hinge-side edges while opening and closing slowly. A properly fitted case should not pinch the hinge, scrape the display or catch on the factory film.
- Keep the hinge area open to inspection. Avoid covers, inserts or adhesive parts that can shed material into the mechanism.
- Replace a case that has warped, cracked or collected grit beneath it; a damaged case can transfer pressure to the fold.
Keep the factory inner protector in place
The inner protector is not ordinary packaging. Samsung and Google warn users not to remove it or apply a third-party film. Motorola’s Razr guidance says not to use a screen protector on the internal display. These instructions differ by model, so the owner’s manual and support page for your exact phone take precedence over a universal accessory recommendation.

Do not test a film by picking at a corner, trimming it, adding adhesive or pressing a bubble toward the crease. Those actions can separate the display layers and may affect warranty or service eligibility.
Keep objects and pressure out of the fold
Close the phone before storage
Motorola specifically advises closing a Razr before putting it in a pocket or purse. The same habit is sensible for any foldable: a closed phone presents fewer exposed surfaces and prevents a loose object from landing directly on the inner panel. Before closing, look across both display halves and the hinge-side edges.

Remove the objects most likely to cause damage
- Cards, cash, receipts and coins can sit across the crease and create concentrated pressure.
- Keys, pens, tools and jewelry can scratch or puncture the inner display.
- Sand, crumbs, grit and lint can be crushed into the hinge or dragged across the flexible surface.
- Loose items in a bag can press on a half while the phone is partly open, producing leverage on the hinge.
Store the phone in a separate compartment rather than a pocket shared with keys or coins. Do not place weight on an open foldable, and do not close it over a cable, card or other object.
Use the hinge within its intended motion
Open and close the device along its normal path. Never fold it backward, force a hinge that has stopped, or use the two halves as a lever to remove debris. Resistance, clicking, grinding or a new uneven angle is a reason to stop rather than apply more force.
Keep hands and the work surface reasonably clean when opening the phone. Oils do not usually cause the structural damage that grit does, but a greasy surface makes particles adhere and encourages harder wiping. Lift the phone by its frame, not by pressing the center of the inner display.

Reduce dust and grit before it reaches the hinge
Inspect before every closure in dirty environments
After a beach, workshop, garden, trail or meal, pause with the phone open under good light. Look for grains along the crease, hinge-side borders and the two inner corners. If you see a particle, leave the device open and remove it with a soft, dry cloth using a light touch. Closing first can drive the particle into the hinge or across the display.

Do not use improvised tools
Do not probe the hinge or display edge with a toothpick, pin, blade, SIM tool, fingernail or folded paper. Motorola warns that dust can reduce hinge life and damage the display, and its Razr guidance says never to insert anything into or try to lift the display edges. A tool can dislodge the seal, scratch a coating or push grit deeper.
Understand what an IP rating does not promise
An IP code is a laboratory classification for specified test conditions. It does not make a foldable completely dustproof or waterproof, and resistance can decline after drops, repairs, wear or seal damage. Samsung says its IP48 models are not completely dust-proof; Google says the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is not dustproof or waterproof despite its factory rating; Motorola says the Razr Fold is not waterproof or dustproof and advises against beach or pool use.
Clean the screen and hinge safely
General sequence
- Disconnect charging accessories and close the phone only after checking that no debris is on either inner half.
- Open the device on a clean, stable surface so the inner display is supported rather than dangling.
- Use a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. Wipe with light strokes; do not press into the crease.
- If your manufacturer permits a screen wipe, use only the specified type and keep liquid off openings, the hinge gap and speaker or microphone ports.
- Allow any permitted moisture to evaporate before closing or charging the phone.
Samsung devices
Samsung’s cleaning guidance calls for a soft, dry cloth for a dusty hinge and warns against pressing the screen with a sharp object. Keep the cloth dry when working around the hinge unless the exact model’s instructions expressly allow another method. Do not remove the protector film.
Google Pixel foldables
Google recommends a soft lint-free cloth and permits screen wipes or wipes based on 70% isopropyl alcohol for Pixel devices. Apply the wipe to the cloth or use a purpose-made wipe as directed; never spray cleaner directly onto the phone. Keep liquid away from openings and the hinge, and use only enough moisture to remove the mark.

Motorola foldables
Motorola permits a lint-free cloth or approved wipes, including 70% isopropyl alcohol-based wipes in the cited guidance. Do not use bleach or abrasive cleaners, do not spray directly onto the device, and do not allow excess moisture into openings. Motorola specifically warns against pressurized air dusters on a Razr. A compressed-air blast can drive particles past seals or move debris into the hinge.

What the published water and dust ratings mean
Use the rating as a boundary for risk management, not as permission to submerge the phone recreationally. Fresh water, test depth, duration, factory condition and the absence of wear all matter.

If the phone is dropped, opened by an unauthorized repairer or shows a damaged seal, assume the original resistance may no longer apply. Dry the exterior, do not charge a wet phone, and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions.
Daily habits that prevent the most common failures
- Use a light touch: tap and swipe with a fingertip, not a nail, pen, stylus tip or other sharp object. Excessive pressure can damage a flexible panel even when the glass appears intact.
- Open on a clean surface: avoid unfolding directly on sand, crumbs or a dusty workbench.
- Keep magnets and accessories clear of the fold: do not wedge a wallet, grip, strap anchor or decorative insert across the crease unless the exact case maker designed it for that model.
- Check the case after cleaning: particles trapped between the case and frame can rub every time the phone opens.
- Use two hands for a stiff or unfamiliar hinge: support both halves instead of twisting one side.
- Do not carry the phone partly open: a partly folded device is more vulnerable to side pressure in a pocket or bag.
Recognize damage early
Protector bubbling, lifting or a new crease
Stop pressing the affected area. Do not peel, puncture, smooth or replace the inner film yourself. Samsung directs protector replacement to authorized service centers, while Google recommends professional repair for flexible-screen problems.

Hinge resistance, grinding or an uneven close
Keep the phone at the angle where it moves freely, remove the case only if doing so is safe and does not require force, and inspect for visible debris. Do not insert a tool or spray cleaner. If resistance remains, arrange authorized service; continued opening can turn a particle problem into hinge or display damage.
Lines, black spots, touch failures or a puncture
Do not press the defect to see whether it improves. Close the phone gently if it can close without force, protect it from additional pressure and contact the manufacturer’s authorized repair channel. A puncture or spreading line can indicate damage beneath the protector.
Liquid ingress or a wet hinge
Disconnect power, remove external moisture with a soft cloth and leave the phone alone. Do not use a heater, hair dryer, compressed air or repeated folding to “work out” liquid. Professional inspection is appropriate, especially after immersion or exposure to saltwater, pool chemicals or sugary drinks.
A practical travel and storage checklist
- Install the exact-model case and verify that the hinge opens and closes without contact.
- Keep the inner factory film untouched and confirm your model’s written protector policy.
- Pack the closed phone in a separate, clean compartment away from keys, coins, cards and toiletries.
- Carry a soft lint-free microfiber cloth rather than tissues, paper towels or abrasive fabric.
- After outdoor or dusty use, inspect both inner halves before closing.
- Use only manufacturer-approved wipes, and never spray liquid onto the phone.
- Avoid beach and pool use on models whose guidance says they are not waterproof or dustproof, including Motorola’s Razr Fold.
- If the hinge changes feel or the display film lifts, stop experimenting and contact authorized service.
When a third-party accessory is a bad idea
Generic inner-screen films, hinge inserts and compressed-air dusters appear convenient but conflict with the cited manufacturer instructions. A film can change folding tension or trap grit; an insert can obstruct the hinge; and air pressure can push contamination into openings. The lowest-risk accessory set is an exact-model case that leaves folding clearance and a soft lint-free cloth, supplemented only by cleaning wipes your manufacturer explicitly permits.
How to balance protection with usability
A bulky case that prevents a complete close is not protective. Test the case with the phone open, half folded and shut. Confirm that buttons, cameras, wireless charging and the outer display remain usable without forcing the phone into an unusual angle. If the case gathers dust, remove it in a clean area, wipe both the case and phone with the approved method, and reinstall it only when dry.
Likewise, avoiding every touch is unnecessary. The goal is controlled contact: fingertip taps, normal folding, clean storage and gentle wiping. The damaging combinations are sharp pressure, trapped particles, forced hinge movement and unauthorized work on the inner display.
Manufacturer guidance is model-specific
Foldable product families change materials, seals and hinge designs between generations. Samsung’s IPX8 and IP48 statements apply to the models listed in its support guidance, not automatically to every Galaxy foldable. Google’s IP68 statement is for the Pixel 11 Pro Fold at factory condition under IEC 60529. Motorola’s IP46, IP48 and IP49 figures are laboratory ratings for the Razr Fold, alongside an explicit warning that it is not waterproof or dustproof. Check the exact model’s current manual before using any liquid, accessory or repair method.
