Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteKeep a foldable phone away from sand and dust whenever possible, close it before carrying it in a dirty environment, and inspect the gap between its screens before every fold. No foldable should be treated as completely dustproof. Even Samsung models with an IP48 rating have limited dust resistance, and small particles can scratch or dent displays or interfere with hinge operation.
The safest care routine is preventative: avoid sandy locations, use a clean soft cloth on accessible surfaces, keep coins and keys away from the phone, and never force the device closed against grit or another object. The exact protection depends on your model, so read its official care page rather than assuming that one Galaxy Z generation or another brand’s foldable has the same rating.

Is a foldable phone dustproof?
No. “Dustproof” is too broad a description for current foldables. Samsung says its IP48-rated Galaxy foldables have limited dust resistance and are not completely dust-proof. The rating reduces risk under a defined test; it does not make a hinge, screen seam or internal mechanism immune to fine dust, sand or grit.

Older foldables may carry an IPX8 rating. The X means that the rating does not specify protection against solid particles; IPX8 addresses water resistance under the stated test conditions. A phone with IPX8 should not be advertised or understood as dust-resistant simply because it can survive water immersion.

Samsung’s support wording is explicit: “For IP48-rated devices, dust resistance is limited and does not mean the device is completely dust-proof.” Rating lists can change as new models launch, so check the support page for the exact phone in your hand.
Why tiny particles are a special risk
Sand can damage both display and hinge
Sand is abrasive. A grain trapped between the two halves can press into the flexible main display when the phone closes, leaving a scratch or dent. Particles can also work into moving areas around the hinge and alter how the phone opens, closes or holds its position. Samsung specifically warns that sand and other small particles may affect screen condition, hinge performance and overall device operation, including on IP48-rated models.
An open phone has more exposed surfaces
When a foldable is open, the inner display and hinge area are exposed to the environment. Dust can settle on those surfaces before you notice it. Closing the phone reduces the exposed area while you walk, travel or put it in a bag, but closing is not a way to crush debris safely. Inspect first, then fold without resistance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no reliable damage-rate statistic
Samsung’s care pages warn about the mechanism and screens but do not publish an independent percentage for dust-related failures. Treat the warnings as a reason to reduce exposure, not as evidence that a particular failure rate is known.
Prepare before entering a dusty or sandy place
Choose a cleaner pocket or bag
Keep the phone in a dedicated pocket or compartment rather than alongside coins, keys or abrasive objects. Samsung’s UK guidance specifically cautions against storing the device with such items. A separate compartment also makes it easier to check for loose grit before opening the phone.
Close the phone before carrying it
If you must move through sand, soil, construction dust or another particle-heavy setting, close the device before putting it in a pocket or bag. Do not leave it open on a beach towel, workbench or vehicle dashboard where airborne grit can settle on the inner display.

Use a case for handling protection, not as a dust seal
A case matched to the exact model can help protect the outer surfaces from knocks and scuffs. It does not automatically seal the hinge or stop fine particles from reaching it. Case designs differ, and the available manufacturer guidance does not substantiate a dust-ingress performance claim for a particular case. Keep the case clean and inspect under removable sections rather than assuming the case makes beach use safe.

Use a pre-fold inspection every time
Most preventable damage occurs when an object is trapped between the displays. Make this a short routine before closing the phone:
- Move the phone to a stable, well-lit position.
- Look across the entire inner display and the bezel areas for grains, lint, cards, coins, keys or other objects.
- Remove any loose item with your fingers without dragging it across the screen.
- If dust remains, wipe accessible surfaces with a clean, soft cloth.
- Close the phone gently. If you feel resistance or the halves do not align normally, stop instead of applying more pressure.
Samsung warns that cards, coins and keys trapped between the screens can damage the main display. A phone that will not close normally should remain open while you remove the suspected obstruction. Forcing the fold can turn a removable particle into permanent display damage.
How to clean accessible dust safely
Use a clean, soft cloth
Samsung’s care instructions recommend a clean, soft cloth for accessible surfaces. Use a fresh section of the cloth and light strokes on the outer body, cover display and reachable areas around the inner screen. The aim is to lift particles, not grind them into the surface.
Clean the case separately when needed
If your case has removable pieces and dirt has collected beneath them, Samsung says those pieces may be removed so the device can be wiped. Remove one piece at a time, keep track of its orientation, wipe the exposed phone and clean the case piece before reinstalling it. Confirm that no grit remains at the edges before snapping the piece back into place.
Do not improvise a hinge-cleaning tool
The reviewed Samsung instructions do not provide a procedure for inserting a brush, pick, cloth, pin or another object into a hinge. Do not push a tool into the hinge to chase visible grit. An inserted object can move debris farther inside or damage the hinge and its protective components. Restrict home cleaning to surfaces you can reach without probing the mechanism.

When professional attention is sensible
Arrange manufacturer or qualified service support if the phone develops persistent grinding, unusual resistance, a gap between the halves, a display mark that remains after surface cleaning, or a hinge that no longer opens evenly. Describe the exposure and the symptom; do not keep folding the device to test whether the problem improves.
Protect the factory screen protector
Some foldable displays arrive with a factory-applied protector designed for that model’s flexible screen. Samsung advises users not to remove the factory protector or install another film or sticker on certain foldables because doing so can cause damage. Instructions vary by model, so verify the exact support guidance before replacing, lifting or adding anything to the inner display.
A protector is not a substitute for particle control. It cannot make the hinge dustproof, and a grain beneath the phone’s fold can still apply pressure to the display.

Understand what IP48 actually tests
Samsung UK explains that its IP48 solid-object test for the Fold7 and Flip7 applies to objects larger than 1 mm. That is a defined test threshold, not a statement that every finer particle is harmless. Fine dust and sand can be smaller, irregularly shaped or carried into moving gaps by repeated opening and closing.
The water portion of the rating is also tested under specified conditions using freshwater immersion. Samsung warns against beach or pool use. Salt, dirt, waves, splashes and contamination at those locations are not equivalent to the controlled test environment. An IP rating therefore helps you interpret a manufacturer’s test, but it is not permission to expose a foldable to any environment where the rating sounds relevant.
Model differences you should check
Do not infer protection from a product family name. Samsung’s current care page lists IP48-rated Galaxy Z Fold6, Z Flip6, Z Fold7, Z Flip7 and later models shown there, while several previous Fold and Flip generations are listed as IPX8. The page can change, and regional support pages may organize models differently.

Situational routines that reduce exposure
At a beach or on a trail
Keep the phone closed in a clean compartment and handle it with dry, clean hands. Avoid opening it immediately after setting it on sand or a dusty surface. Move to a cleaner location, inspect the seam and wipe accessible areas before using the inner screen.
In a workshop or renovation area
Leave the foldable outside the particle-heavy zone when possible. If you need it for directions or communication, open it briefly, then close it before moving. Do not place it on a work surface covered with sawdust, masonry dust or metal filings.
During a commute
Use a dedicated pocket rather than a pocket shared with keys and coins. Before opening the phone on public transport, glance at the inner display and hinge area. Lint from a bag or clothing is still debris that can become trapped during a fold.
At home
Keep the device away from loose craft materials, pet litter and kitchen grit. A closed phone stored in a clean compartment is less exposed than one left open on a counter, but inspect it if it has been near flour, soil or other fine particles.

The phone closes but the screen shows a new dent or scratch
Record when you noticed the mark and what was trapped, if known. Avoid pressing the area or applying a new film. Have the device assessed, especially if touch response, display lines or alignment also change.
A case has collected dirt underneath
Remove the case’s detachable section as directed by its design, wipe the phone with a clean, soft cloth, clean the case piece and reinstall it only after both surfaces are free of grit. A dirty case can repeatedly transfer particles even when the phone itself is functioning normally.
What hinge fibres and fold-cycle claims mean
Samsung Support UK says of the Fold3 and Flip3: “Hinges applied with sweeper fibres decrease the influx of foreign substances, however, they do not guarantee dust resistance.” That statement applies to those models and should not be generalized to every foldable hinge.
Samsung also reported that Fold3 and Flip3 displays withstood more than 200,000 folds in Samsung testing. This is a manufacturer fold-cycle test claim, not a measurement of dust damage, particle survival or real-world beach use. A hinge can meet a fold-cycle target and still require careful particle avoidance.
A simple maintenance checklist
- Confirm the exact model’s IP rating and care restrictions.
- Keep the phone away from sand and dusty environments whenever practical.
- Close it before carrying it through a particle-heavy area.
- Use a dedicated pocket or compartment away from keys, coins and abrasive objects.
- Inspect between the displays before every fold.
- Never force the phone closed against an obstruction or resistance.
- Wipe accessible surfaces with a clean, soft cloth.
- Remove removable case pieces to clean beneath them when dirt accumulates.
- Do not probe the hinge with a brush, pick, cloth or other object.
- Follow the model’s instructions for its factory screen protector and any replacement film.
- Stop using the folding mechanism normally and seek qualified support when resistance, grinding, misalignment or display damage appears.
The practical answer
Protecting a foldable from dust is mainly a handling discipline, not a search for a perfectly sealed accessory. Check the model-specific rating, treat IP48 as limited protection, keep the phone closed in dirty environments, inspect the screen gap before folding, and clean only surfaces the manufacturer identifies as accessible. Those steps reduce avoidable damage without promising that any foldable or case is dustproof.
