Start by verifying the Search Console data, then isolate the affected pages, countries and dates before changing content. Check indexing, crawling, redirects, policy reports and image eligibility; only after those checks should you compare the timing with a Google update. Discover distribution is proactive and unpredictable, so no chart alone proves a penalty or a specific algorithm cause.
1. Verify that the drop is real
Use the free Search Console Discover Performance report as the source of truth for Google-reported Discover traffic. Open Search Console, choose the correct property, select Performance, and open the Discover search appearance. Compare complete date ranges rather than an unfinished “today” view.

- Set a before period and an after period with the same number of days.
- Compare clicks, impressions and CTR together.
- Use the same weekday mix in both periods; a Monday-to-Sunday week is more useful than comparing a weekend with a workweek.
- Record the dates of the first sustained change, not just the lowest day.
Google says the newest Discover data can be preliminary and may change. The report is available only when a property reaches Google’s minimum impression threshold, and individual URLs also need enough impressions to appear in page tables. An empty or incomplete report therefore does not prove that Google removed a site from Discover. The report can contain up to 16 months of history when the property meets the threshold; see Google’s Discover report documentation and Search Console’s performance guidance.

Read the three metrics as a pattern

2. Find the exact scope of the decline
A site-wide line chart hides the answer. In the Discover report, segment the before and after periods by date, page, country and search appearance. Export the rows if the interface is too small to compare them comfortably.

- Page: identify whether traffic vanished from a single article, a topic cluster, a template or nearly every URL.
- Country: determine whether the change is confined to one market or language.
- Date: mark the first affected day and compare matching weekdays.
- Appearance type: keep Discover data separate from Web Search and other Google surfaces.
- Final URL: check which URL receives credit after a redirect, canonical change or host migration.
Make a simple scope matrix before editing anything:

Do not combine Discover clicks with Web Search clicks and call the total a recovery. They are separate datasets with different user behavior and delivery systems. A Search increase can coexist with a Discover decrease.
3. Rule out a property, crawl or indexing problem
Before revising headlines or publishing more articles, verify that Google can still access and index the affected pages. Google’s general traffic-drop checklist is at Why did my site traffic drop?.

Confirm the Search Console property
Make sure the selected property matches the live site’s protocol and host. https://example.com, http://example.com, https://www.example.com and another subdomain can be separate URL-prefix properties. A property mismatch can look like a sudden loss even when Google traffic is still arriving elsewhere.
Inspect representative affected URLs
- Copy an affected article’s final, canonical URL.
- Open URL Inspection in Search Console and inspect the live URL.
- Check whether the page is indexed, which canonical Google selected, and whether the live test can fetch it.
- Repeat the check for a page that retained Discover traffic so you have a control example.
Investigate any recent URL or host move, redirect chain, canonical change, accidental noindex, restrictive robots.txt rule, login wall, firewall block or server outage. Review Page Indexing and crawl statistics for a matching rise in errors, blocked resources or failures. A page can be technically available to a browser and still be blocked from Googlebot by a rule or access layer.

Compare the page before and after a site change
List deployments and editorial changes around the first affected date: CMS or theme releases, URL rewrites, image/CDN changes, consent or authentication changes, ad scripts, navigation edits and bulk updates to metadata. Look for a shared template error rather than assuming every article independently lost quality.
After a fix, Google may need to recrawl and reprocess the page. Reinspection is useful for confirming that the current page is fetchable, but it is not a command that guarantees immediate Discover distribution.
4. Check manual actions and security notices
Open both Manual actions and Security issues in Search Console. Google documents a News and Discover misleading-content manual action. If one is present, read the affected examples, correct the pages and request a review only after the underlying issue is fixed. The workflow is described in Google’s Manual actions report documentation.
An empty manual-actions report is useful evidence that no reported manual action is currently visible, but it does not explain a traffic change. Discover can fluctuate without a manual action, and an algorithmic or demand-related change will not necessarily generate a Search Console notice. Treat policy status as one branch of the diagnosis, not as a pass/fail explanation for the entire chart.
5. Audit Discover eligibility and article presentation
Google says a page must be indexed and comply with Discover policies to be eligible, but eligibility is not a promise that the page will be shown. There are no special Discover tags or structured-data requirements that make a page eligible. The current baseline is documented in Get on Discover.

Use an image that can work in a Discover card
Google recommends relevant, representative, high-quality images and says larger images are more likely to generate visits. Its listed guidance calls for an image at least 1,200 pixels wide, with more than 300,000 total pixels, and either max-image-preview:large or AMP. These are Google documentation specifications, not a guarantee of traffic.
- Use an image that accurately represents the article rather than a generic stock scene.
- Avoid text-heavy graphics, tiny logos and images that become unreadable in a card.
- Declare the preferred image consistently with schema.org markup or
og:image. - Check that the image is crawlable, returns a successful response and is not blocked by a CDN or robots rule.
- When a shared template changed, compare image dimensions and markup on an affected and unaffected URL.
Review the content itself
Check whether an article still delivers what its headline promises, identifies its subject and date when freshness matters, and adds original detail rather than repeating a thin summary. Discover recommendations are not query results: a page can remain indexed while receiving fewer impressions because its topic, audience or presentation no longer matches current opportunities.
Do not add invented “Discover” schema, hidden keywords or artificial tags. Google’s eligibility guidance does not require them, and changing markup without fixing an access, quality or relevance problem creates noise in your investigation.
6. Compare the timing with Google updates without claiming causation
Check Google’s published update history and rollout dates after documenting your own first affected date. The February 2026 Discover core update announcement said the change aimed to show more locally relevant content, reduce sensationalism and clickbait, and surface more in-depth, original and timely content from sites with topic expertise.
That update began with English-language users in the United States, with expansion to other countries and languages planned. Google also warned that Discover traffic could fluctuate. John Mueller, Google Search Advocate, wrote: “As with all core updates, this change may lead to fluctuations in Discover traffic. Some sites might see increases or decreases; many sites may see no change at all.”

Use that information to prioritize comparisons, not to declare a verdict. A decline that starts during a rollout is consistent with an update, but timing alone does not prove that the update caused your site’s loss. A country-specific drop may reflect rollout geography; a global drop that began earlier may have another explanation.
7. Use a controlled before-and-after comparison
Build one comparison sheet for complete, like-for-like periods. Keep the date range length and weekday mix consistent, then record:

Use analytics as a secondary check for sessions and engagement, but do not substitute an analytics channel grouping for Search Console’s Discover impressions. Tracking-code changes, consent behavior and attribution rules can alter analytics without changing Google’s delivery data.

- Correct measurement first. Save the original date ranges, property selection and exported rows.
- Fix access and indexing blockers. Remove accidental directives, repair redirects, restore server access and correct canonical or host configuration.
- Resolve any manual-action or security issue. Correct affected pages, then submit the appropriate review request.
- Repair shared templates and images. Restore crawlable, representative images and the documented large-preview setting where appropriate.
- Improve affected content. Make the article accurate, original, useful and proportionate to its headline; do not rewrite every page indiscriminately.
- Record each change and its date. Without a change log, later movement cannot be tied to a specific fix.
Change one coherent problem at a time where practical. A simultaneous sitewide redesign, headline rewrite and image replacement may produce a better-looking site but leaves you unable to tell which issue mattered.
9. Monitor correctly after the diagnosis
Discover is less predictable than query-driven Search because Google proactively serves items to users rather than waiting for a query. Expect day-to-day volatility and evaluate complete days over consistent periods. Recheck the same segments that identified the problem: the affected URLs, countries, templates and metrics.

There is no universal Discover recovery time. It depends on what was wrong and when Google recrawls, reprocesses and chooses to distribute the content again. A technically fixed page can remain quiet if the original cause was reduced demand or a change in recommendation opportunities.
Google’s general core-update guidance recommends waiting a full week after a rollout completes before analyzing Search performance; that is Search-specific advice, not a fixed Discover recovery rule. Use the date of a verified fix and the completion of any relevant Discover rollout as monitoring markers, while continuing to compare like-for-like periods.
10. A compact decision tree
- The Discover report is missing or incomplete: check impression thresholds, date freshness and property selection before assuming removal.
- Impressions fell for all URLs: inspect indexing, crawl access, server changes, policy reports and broad site changes.
- Only a template or section fell: compare shared directives, canonical tags, redirects, image markup and publication workflow.
- Impressions stayed steady but CTR fell: inspect card image, headline, topic fit, country mix and recent presentation changes.
- The change is confined to one country: compare rollout geography, language and regional content before making global edits.
- No technical or policy fault is found: compare content depth, originality, sensationalism, local relevance and timing with announced updates, then monitor rather than guessing at a penalty.
11. What a defensible conclusion looks like
Your final diagnosis should name the observed scope, the evidence checked and the level of certainty. For example: “Discover impressions fell 68% on 12 URLs in the US beginning two days after a template deployment; URL Inspection found a sitewide noindex, which was removed on 14 October.” That is stronger than “the February update penalized us” because it connects a measurable change to a verified technical condition.

Keep the change log, exports and inspection results so the next complete-period comparison can test whether the verified fix changed impressions, CTR or neither.
