How to Protect a Cross-Chain Crypto Wallet from Approval and Bridge Exploits

Protect a cross-chain wallet by checking bridge details before signing, limiting token allowances, reviewing approvals on every network, and securing keys independently.

Before you use a crypto bridge, check the site, networks, asset, destination, and transaction details in your wallet. Grant only the token allowance you need, review and revoke old approvals on each network, and keep your recovery phrase and private keys secret. A wallet connection is not the same as a token approval, and using a hardware wallet does not make a harmful transaction safe.

What an approval lets a contract do

A token approval is a permission: it lets a dapp or contract access and move a specified token on your behalf. It is separate from connecting your wallet to a site. Some approval requests may be effectively unlimited, so check the requested amount rather than treating approval as a routine step. MetaMask advises users to review approval amounts and supports custom spending caps in applicable flows.

Choose the narrowest allowance that works

If the wallet and application let you set a custom amount, approve only what you expect to use. A smaller allowance limits the permission you grant, though it does not by itself establish that the application or transaction is trustworthy. If the request is unexpected, unclear, or broader than you can explain, do not approve it.

Check the bridge workflow before signing

There is no universal bridge-specific checklist established by the sources cited here. For any cross-chain transaction, apply the general approval and transaction-review safeguards below; do not infer that a bridge is safe merely because its interface looks familiar or its transaction is supported by a wallet.

  1. Open the project’s official site from a trusted bookmark. Avoid relying on unsolicited links or urgent prompts.
  2. Check both networks. Confirm the selected source and destination networks in the application and wallet.
  3. Check the asset and destination. Make sure the asset and destination details shown in the wallet match what you intend.
  4. Inspect the permission. Identify the requesting site or contract and review the token and allowance amount. Use a limited amount when supported.
  5. Read the transaction or signature request. Do not sign an unexplained request, or one presented with pressure to act immediately. If the wallet does not show details you can meaningfully understand, stop rather than guessing.

The Ethereum Foundation’s May 12, 2026 Clear Signing announcement describes users approving transactions they cannot meaningfully understand as a recurring final step in major exploits, and announces an open standard intended to make transaction information clearer. Readable details and wallet alerts can help you assess a request, but they are not a guarantee that the contract or bridge is safe.

Disconnecting a dapp does not revoke token approvals

Disconnecting can end some dapp connection or visibility permissions. It does not remove an existing token allowance. To remove an allowance, review it separately and submit an on-chain revocation transaction. This distinction matters if you have stopped using a site: disconnecting alone leaves any existing allowance in place.

How to review and revoke approvals

  1. Choose an approval checker. You can use a wallet portfolio tool, a network-specific block explorer approval checker, or a multi-network tool named in Ethereum.org’s security guidance. Confirm the tool’s domain independently before connecting your wallet.
  2. Select the network you want to inspect. Approval checkers show contracts for the selected network; checking one chain does not automatically review your approvals on other chains.
  3. Review the spender and allowance. Check which contract has permission and the amount or scope of the permission before deciding whether it is still needed.
  4. Revoke permissions you no longer need. Revocation is an on-chain action: submit the transaction and pay the applicable network gas.
  5. Verify the result. Check that the allowance no longer appears for that contract on that network. When you use the contract again, you may need to grant a new approval.

When comparing tools, look at which networks they support, whether they clearly identify the spender and allowance, whether revocation is submitted as an on-chain transaction, and whether you can check the resulting state. No single checker should be assumed to cover every network you use.

Keep recovery phrases and private keys separate from dapp permissions

Never share your recovery phrase or private keys. Ethereum.org describes hardware wallets as keeping private keys local and offline. This is a key-custody measure, not an approval-management feature: it does not prove a bridge or dapp is safe, and it cannot make an unsafe approval or transaction harmless. A device’s chain and asset support, transaction display, recovery process, and ability to help you understand a contract call are relevant when evaluating it, but no specific device model is established here.

What to do after signing something suspicious

Act promptly if you suspect a malicious approval or transaction. Ethereum.org’s security guidance advises moving remaining assets to a new secure wallet, revoking approvals, changing linked exchange passwords, and enabling two-factor authentication. Transactions cannot be reversed, and offers to recover stolen crypto for a fee are likely to be another scam.

  • Move remaining assets at risk. Use a new secure wallet whose recovery phrase has not been exposed.
  • Revoke the harmful allowance where possible. Check the relevant network and verify the allowance state after the revocation transaction.
  • Secure linked accounts. Change passwords for linked exchange accounts and enable two-factor authentication.
  • Keep records for reporting. Preserve transaction hashes, addresses, screenshots, and messages.
  • Do not hand over secrets. Do not share keys or a recovery phrase with anyone claiming they can recover funds.

A revocation can remove a token permission, but it cannot reverse a completed transaction or guarantee that assets already moved can be recovered.
