Time-reversal symmetry breaking means a superconducting state is not unchanged when time is reversed. It is a property reported for some superconducting phases—not a claim that a material travels backward in time, and not a feature of every superconductor. Researchers look for clues such as weak internal magnetic fields, but observing a signal does not by itself reveal the precise pairing mechanism.
What does “time reversal” mean in this context?
In physics, reversing time means asking how a system would look if the direction of time were reversed. For example, motion would run in the opposite direction, and quantities such as angular momentum and magnetic moments would reverse. A state has time-reversal symmetry if it remains physically equivalent after that transformation.

In a time-reversal-symmetry-breaking superconductor, the superconducting phase is not equivalent to its time-reversed counterpart. The phrase describes a symmetry of the state, not a process unfolding over time. The symmetry breaking is associated with the superconducting phase in particular materials; it is not a defining property of superconductivity in general.

Some proposed time-reversal-breaking states can produce spontaneous, weak internal magnetic fields. Detecting an additional field below the superconducting transition can therefore support the idea that the superconducting state breaks time-reversal symmetry.

That is evidence to interpret, not a unique fingerprint. Internal fields can have other origins, and an observed signal alone does not identify the superconducting order parameter, pairing type, or topology. The interpretation depends on whether the signal tracks the superconducting transition, what controls were used, and whether alternative sources such as nuclear moments, magnetism, or disorder can explain it.
How do the main experimental probes differ?
| Probe | What it measures | What a signal can contribute | Interpretive limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zero-field muon spin relaxation (μSR) | Changes in the relaxation of implanted, spin-polarized positive muons as they decay in the sample. | An increase in relaxation can indicate additional weak local magnetic fields. | Analysis depends on the field environment and details such as where muons stop. A field signal does not by itself identify its source or the pairing state. |
| Polar Kerr effect | Rotation in the polarization of light reflected from the sample. | An optical response can provide evidence relevant to a time-reversal-breaking interpretation. | The optical signal alone does not establish which microscopic order parameter produced it. |
These methods are complementary because they couple to the material in different ways: μSR responds to local magnetic fields, while a Kerr measurement detects an optical rotation. Agreement between different kinds of evidence can strengthen a case, but neither method automatically settles the microscopic explanation.

Why are controls and alternative explanations important?
A measured field should not be attributed to superconductivity-related symmetry breaking without considering other possible sources. An early μSR study of cuprate samples, for example, found fields that favored a nuclear dipolar origin. The example illustrates why a field signal is not, on its own, proof of a time-reversal-breaking superconducting state.
When evaluating a reported result, separate three questions:

- What was observed? Identify the measured quantity and whether it appeared at or below the superconducting transition.
- What alternatives were tested? Consider nuclear moments, magnetic contributions, disorder, and other possible sources of the signal.
- What conclusion does the evidence support? A measurement may support symmetry breaking without uniquely identifying the order parameter, pairing mechanism, or topology.
What do reports in particular materials establish?
Review literature discusses time-reversal-symmetry-breaking evidence in materials including Sr2RuO4, UPt3, URu2Si2, and several rhenium-containing compounds. These reports do not establish a single mechanism shared by all of them. Reviews of rhenium-based materials emphasize variation among related compounds, while broader reviews consider multiple proposed order parameters and mechanisms.
Sr2RuO4: evidence is not the same as explanation
Sr2RuO4 is a prominent and contested example. The proposed chiral p-wave state has been influential, but the interpretation of the material’s superconducting order parameter remains an active scientific issue in the reviewed literature. Evidence interpreted as time-reversal symmetry breaking should not be presented as proof of spin-triplet pairing, chiral p-wave pairing, or topological superconductivity.
Quick Recap
How should you read a claim of time-reversal symmetry breaking?
- Check what was measured. Distinguish a local-field signal, an optical rotation, or another observable.
- Check when it appeared. Ask whether the signal emerges at or below the superconducting transition, rather than assuming it is tied to superconductivity.
- Check the controls. Look for tests of alternative sources, including nuclear moments, magnetism, and disorder.
- Keep the conclusion at the level the data support. Evidence for a broken symmetry is not automatically evidence for one particular pairing state or for topological superconductivity.
