How to Protect a Camera from Rain at an Outdoor Event

Use a camera rain cover, keep compartments sealed, and wipe off droplets. Weather resistance does not guarantee protection during sustained rain.

Use a camera rain cover over the camera and lens, keep battery, card and terminal compartments closed, and wipe off droplets with a clean, dry cloth. Weather resistance is not waterproofing: for sustained rain, use a cover even if your camera is described as weather-resistant.

Before the event: prepare the camera and cover

  1. Check the manual for your exact camera and lens. Water-resistance claims and conditions differ by model. For example, Panasonic says the LUMIX GH5M2’s splash resistance applies in conjunction with designated lenses; do not assume another body or lens has the same protection. Panasonic LUMIX GH5M2 before-use guidance
  2. Choose and test a camera rain cover. Panasonic recommends an optional rain cover in rain or snow, and Ricoh recommends one for continuous rain with the weather-resistant PENTAX KF. Check that the cover fits your camera-and-lens combination, covers exposed areas and still lets you operate the controls you need. These are practical fit checks, not a ranking of particular products. Panasonic AK-HC5000G/AK-HC5000GS operating instructions; Ricoh Imaging PENTAX KF FAQ
  3. Close every cover and cap. Check battery, memory-card and terminal doors, along with socket caps and contact covers. Panasonic and Canon both advise keeping relevant openings protected. Canon EOS R6 V handling precautions; Panasonic LUMIX GH5M2 before-use guidance
  4. Pack a clean, dry cloth. Canon’s handling guidance for the EOS R50 and EOS R6 V says to wipe droplets with one. Canon EOS R50 handling precautions

During the event: keep rain off and openings shut

Put the cover on before the camera is exposed to rain, and keep it in place during prolonged wet conditions. Do not open compartments while rain can reach them, and wipe visible droplets when practical. A cover reduces exposure; it does not make the camera waterproof.

Weather-resistant designs still have limits. Canon says the EOS R6 V is not waterproof and that its drip-resistant construction cannot prevent water entry in every circumstance. Ricoh warns that prolonged wetting can lead to water ingress in the PENTAX KF and recommends a rain cover for continuous rain use. Panasonic similarly cautions that splash resistance does not guarantee protection from damage after direct contact with water.

After rain exposure: dry the exterior and follow model guidance

Wipe droplets from exposed surfaces with a clean, dry cloth. If the camera has become wet, consult its manual for model-specific handling and service advice rather than assuming that drying the exterior resolves any water that may have entered. Canon specifically directs EOS R50 users to contact a Canon Service Center if the camera gets wet. Canon EOS R50 handling precautions

What weather resistance does—and does not—mean

Terms such as splash-resistant, drip-resistant or weather-resistant do not establish that a camera can be safely left in rain. Canon states that the EOS R50 is not waterproof and cannot be used underwater. Its EOS R6 V guidance also says the camera is not waterproof and cannot be used underwater, despite its dust- and drip-resistant design. Panasonic says the GH5M2’s splash resistance does not guarantee protection from damage after direct contact with water, and that feature applies in conjunction with designated lenses. Treat such descriptions as limited protection, not permission to skip a rain cover.
