The defenses remain practical: keep savings offline, use a reputable hardware wallet, protect the recovery phrase as the wallet’s master secret, secure exchange accounts with unique passwords and multi-factor authentication, keep software current, and verify the complete destination address on a trusted device before signing. Never give a recovery phrase to a person, website, support agent or AI assistant.
Why AI-powered Bitcoin scams are harder to recognize
Artificial intelligence improves the scammer’s presentation, not the underlying transaction. Bitcoin transfers are still authorized by whoever controls the signing keys, and confirmed transactions generally cannot be reversed by a wallet reset or a support agent. The danger is that synthetic text, cloned voices, generated images and deepfake video can remove the normal clues that once exposed an impersonator.

The FBI describes cryptocurrency investment fraud in which criminals build trust over time, move the conversation to private messaging services, use real people or deepfake technology on calls, and promote supposed AI trading programs. The requested payment is often Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency sent to an address controlled by the criminal. The FBI advises victims to stop sending money and report the incident to its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
A familiar voice, live video, caller ID, verified-looking profile or polished support page is not proof of authorization. Treat every one of those as an unverified claim until you independently contact the person or organization through a channel you found yourself.
Build a wallet setup that limits the amount a scam can take
Security is easier when a compromised phone or deceptive conversation cannot reach your entire balance. Separate long-term savings from day-to-day spending and decide in advance which device is allowed to authorize each kind of payment.
| Arrangement | Where the signing keys are controlled | Best use | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange account | A third party controls the wallet infrastructure while you access an account | Trading or temporary balances | You must secure the account and trust the provider’s controls; phishing can still authorize withdrawals |
| Self-custody hot wallet | Your phone or computer holds or accesses the keys while connected to the internet | Small, regular spending balances | Convenient, but exposed to malware, phishing and device compromise |
| Hardware wallet | A dedicated device isolates key operations from the everyday computer or phone | Offline savings and larger balances | More setup and signing friction; it cannot stop you from approving a fraudulent address |
| Multisignature wallet | Several independent keys are required for a transaction | Large, shared or organizational holdings | Higher operational complexity and a need to protect and document several signing devices or locations |
Bitcoin.org describes offline wallets as the highest-security option for savings and calls hardware wallets “the best balance between very high security and ease of use.” Keep only a limited spending amount on an internet-connected computer or mobile device. The right limit depends on what you can afford to lose, but the principle is constant: a scammer who compromises a hot wallet should not gain access to your reserves.

Use offline storage for savings
Choose a reputable hardware wallet
Buy a hardware wallet through a manufacturer or established distributor, inspect the packaging and initialize it yourself. Follow the device’s official setup process and verify that the recovery words are generated on the device, not supplied by a seller, a caller or a website. A prewritten phrase is a decisive warning sign: whoever created it may already know the keys.
Keep the device’s firmware and companion software current. Updates provide stability and security fixes, but install them only through the wallet maker’s genuine application or documented update process. A pop-up, search advertisement or support message that asks you to “synchronize,” “unlock” or “validate” the wallet may be a phishing attempt.

Keep an online wallet for spending only
A phone wallet is useful for small purchases and transfers, yet it should be funded like a cash wallet. Move only the amount needed for near-term spending. Do not use a QR code supplied in an unsolicited message to refill it, and do not let a stranger use screen sharing to guide a transfer.
Consider multisignature for larger or shared holdings
Multisignature (multisig) arrangements require approvals from multiple independent keys. A compromised laptop, lost device or single stolen backup is less likely to be enough to spend the funds. This is particularly useful when more than one person or an organization must authorize payments.
Multisig is not a substitute for careful verification. If the required signers all approve the wrong address after an AI-generated conversation, the transaction can still be valid and irreversible. Document which signers exist, where each backup is stored and how the wallet can be recovered before depositing a large balance.
Protect the recovery phrase as the ultimate secret
A recovery phrase is a sequence of words from which a wallet can be restored. Anyone who obtains it may be able to recreate the wallet and spend its Bitcoin. It is therefore more sensitive than a login password: never disclose it to support, a friend, a trading service, a website, a form, a browser extension, a phone caller or an AI tool.
- Write the phrase down during device initialization and check each word and its order.
- Keep the original offline and out of phone photo libraries, cloud drives, email, messaging apps and password fields.
- Use durable storage appropriate for your circumstances; a metal seed-phrase backup can resist many forms of physical damage better than ordinary paper.
- Store copies in more than one secure location so a single fire, flood or theft does not destroy the only recovery option.
- Do not label a backup with words such as “Bitcoin seed” where visitors or thieves can identify it easily.
- Never type the phrase into a “wallet recovery” page, even if the page displays your wallet’s logo or a convincing support chat.
Bitcoin.org warns that a partial backup may omit keys. Back up the entire wallet according to its documented format, use encryption where the wallet supports it, and test the recovery procedure with no funds at risk before relying on the backup. A test should confirm that you understand the process; it should not require sending the phrase to anyone.

Secure exchange accounts and the devices that access them
Use unique credentials and MFA
Use a long, unpredictable password that is not reused on email, social media or another exchange. A password manager can generate and store unique credentials. Turn on strong multi-factor authentication for every account that can buy, sell or withdraw Bitcoin. A hardware security key provides a phishing-resistant option where the service supports it; otherwise use the strongest available method and protect its recovery codes offline.
Secure the email account behind an exchange account just as carefully. An attacker who takes over email may reset an exchange password or intercept warnings. Review account recovery details, active sessions and withdrawal settings regularly, and remove devices you no longer control.
Keep software and operating systems updated
Install current wallet, browser, phone and computer updates from their normal settings screens. Bitcoin.org notes that current Bitcoin software includes stability and security fixes. An unpatched device is easier to infect with malware that can alter what you see or capture what you type.
Reduce exposure to malware and remote control
- Do not install a wallet or “security update” from a link sent by a caller or chat contact.
- Reject unsolicited remote-desktop or screen-sharing requests.
- Use a separate browser profile or device for high-value wallet administration when practical.
- Lock your phone and computer with a strong passcode and enable automatic updates.
- Check that the wallet application name, publisher and download source match the official documentation before installation.
Verify every request before you authorize it
Use this routine whenever someone asks you to buy Bitcoin, move funds, connect a wallet or approve a transaction. The goal is to interrupt the emotional pressure that AI impersonation creates.
- Stop the conversation. Urgency, fear, secrecy, guaranteed profits or a demand to stay on the line are reasons to pause, not reasons to comply.
- End the supplied channel. Hang up, close the chat and do not click its links or scan its QR codes. Caller ID and a familiar voice can be forged.
- Initiate a separate contact. Use a phone number, bookmark or official statement that you located independently. Do not use contact details provided in the suspicious message.
- Open the wallet yourself. Launch the application from your normal device menu. Never allow a stranger to direct you through a screen-sharing session or a search-result link.
- Inspect the complete address. Read the entire destination address on the wallet’s trusted display and compare it with the address you intended to use. The FBI specifically advises checking the full cryptocurrency address in token-impersonation scams.
- Use a small test only when appropriate. A test transfer can expose a copied address or an operational mistake, but it does not prove that the recipient is honest or that an investment opportunity is genuine.
- Sign only after the independent check. If any character, amount, network or recipient detail differs, cancel and start again from a known source.
Address-poisoning and copy-and-paste tricks exploit the fact that people often inspect only the first and last characters. A hardware wallet’s trusted display helps you verify what is actually being signed, but it cannot identify a dishonest recipient. The human verification step remains essential.

Recognize the most common AI-assisted approaches
Cloned family member or colleague
A caller may sound exactly like someone you know and claim an emergency. End the call and contact that person using a number already saved in your contacts or another established method. Ask a private question only the real person would know if you must assess the situation, but do not treat a correct answer as a substitute for independent contact.
Fake investment expert or AI trading program
Fraudsters may provide a polished dashboard showing fictional profits, testimonials and an AI-powered strategy. They can gradually build trust before demanding a larger deposit, a “tax,” an “unlock fee” or a payment to withdraw. Guaranteed returns and pressure to move the conversation to WhatsApp or Telegram are strong warning signs. Do not send additional funds to recover a displayed balance.
Impersonated support or account-recovery agent
A fake agent may say that suspicious activity requires you to move funds to a “safe” wallet or reveal your recovery phrase. Legitimate support does not need the phrase. Close the conversation and open the provider’s official site or application yourself. Treat any request to pay an upfront cryptocurrency fee for wallet recovery or account unlocking as likely fraud.
Government, bank or law-enforcement impersonation
The FTC says impersonators may instruct targets to buy cryptocurrency and send it to a wallet address or scan a QR code. Government agencies and banks do not make you prove your innocence by transferring Bitcoin to a private address. Call the institution using a number from a statement or its independently found website.
Deepfake video and synthetic profiles
A live video can be generated or manipulated, and a consistent profile picture, writing style and voice can be produced at scale. Look for authorization, not realism. Verify through a second channel you initiate, and require ordinary transaction controls even when the request appears to come from a senior executive, relative or long-time contact.

Custodial exchange or self-custody: choose deliberately
Neither model is automatically safe. Custody changes who must be protected and what can go wrong.
| Question | Custodial exchange | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the signing keys? | The provider controls the infrastructure; you control account credentials and withdrawal permissions | You control the keys and recovery material |
| What happens if you lose access? | The provider may offer an account-recovery process, subject to its rules | You need the complete recovery backup; there may be no third party that can restore it |
| Primary scam target | Phishing, password reuse, fake support and unauthorized withdrawals | Malware, fake wallet software, exposed recovery phrase and approval of a wrong address |
| Best risk control | Unique password, strong MFA, withdrawal protections and independent support verification | Offline key storage, complete backups, trusted-display address checks and strict phrase secrecy |
Some users keep trading liquidity with a custodian and savings in self-custody. If you do this, decide the maximum balance for each place and move funds only through a process that includes address verification.
What to do if you may have been scammed
Speed matters for preserving evidence and preventing a second payment, even though a confirmed Bitcoin transfer cannot normally be canceled.
Recommended Free Tools
- Stop sending money. Do not pay a new “tax,” “verification,” “recovery” or “liquidity” charge to release funds or retrieve an earlier transfer.
- Preserve evidence. Save chat logs, email headers, phone numbers, profile links, wallet addresses, QR images, transaction IDs, payment receipts and screenshots. Keep original files where possible rather than only cropped images.
- Contact the provider through an official channel. Open the exchange or wallet company’s known website or application yourself. No legitimate support agent needs your recovery phrase.
- Protect funds that remain. If a phrase or device may be compromised, create a new wallet on a clean device, secure its new recovery backup offline and move remaining funds only after checking every destination address. A reset or replacement device cannot reverse the transaction already sent to the scammer.
- Report the crime. Report cryptocurrency investment fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and consumer fraud to the FTC at
ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include transaction IDs and addresses. - Do not alert the suspected criminals. The FBI advises against notifying them of an IC3 report because that may compromise an investigation.
Be especially wary of “recovery agents” who contact you after the first loss. A promise of guaranteed recovery in exchange for another cryptocurrency transfer is a second scam pattern, not evidence that the first payment can be reversed.
How much security friction is appropriate?
Every additional check slows a payment, but the inconvenience is small compared with an irreversible loss. Match the controls to the balance and the consequences of an error.
- Small spending balance: a current phone wallet, device lock, unique account credentials and MFA may be sufficient when you can replace the amount.
- Long-term savings: use offline storage, a hardware wallet, complete backups in multiple secure locations and a documented recovery process.
- Shared or high-value funds: consider multisignature, independent signers, separate storage locations and a written procedure for address verification and emergency recovery.
- Any urgent request: apply the full independent-contact and full-address checks, regardless of who appears on the call.
The FBI’s IC3 estimated $3.9 billion in cryptocurrency-related investment-fraud losses reported in 2023. That figure covers reported investment fraud, not every type of Bitcoin scam, and it does not establish what percentage used AI. It does show why a short pause and an offline reserve are worthwhile controls.
Practical checklist
- Keep savings offline and limit the amount in hot wallets.
- Use a reputable hardware wallet and update its software through official channels.
- Back up the entire wallet, not just part of it, and keep encrypted copies in multiple secure locations.
- Store the recovery phrase offline; never enter or disclose it online.
- Use unique, long passwords and strong MFA on exchange and email accounts.
- Reject unsolicited support calls, QR codes, links and screen-sharing requests.
- Verify identity through a trusted channel that you initiate.
- Read the complete destination address and amount on a trusted wallet display before signing.
- Use multisignature for holdings that justify the additional operational complexity.
- If a transfer may be fraudulent, stop, preserve evidence, contact the provider officially and report it; do not pay a second recovery fee.
The bottom line
AI makes impersonation more convincing, but it does not change the controls that keep Bitcoin safe. Separate savings from spending, isolate valuable keys, protect the recovery phrase, secure every account that can move funds and make independent address verification a mandatory step. When a voice, video or message demands speed, secrecy or a guaranteed return, assume the presentation may be synthetic and verify before you sign.
