Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo get a more useful response from an AI mindset coach, describe one situation, the outcome you want from this conversation, and the constraints that matter. Then ask for a specific coaching process: clarify what is missing, connect suggestions to your facts, and help you choose one realistic next action. A precise prompt can guide the conversation, but it cannot guarantee accurate or safe advice.
What to include in a useful prompt
OpenAI recommends stating the task clearly, providing relevant context, and specifying the tone and format you prefer. Its advice is to be specific without making the request needlessly complicated. (OpenAI Help Center; OpenAI Academy)

- Name the situation and near-term goal. “Help me prepare for a difficult conversation tomorrow” is more actionable than “Help me improve my mindset.”
- Give only relevant context. Briefly say what happened, what you have tried, what constraint matters, and what success would look like. Leave out personal background that does not affect the question.
- Ask for a process, not just a persona. A 2026 study of AI coaching chatbot prompts describes a sequence involving the user’s goal, current reality, possible options, and actions. Asking the bot to work through those stages can give the exchange more direction; the study does not establish that this approach improves outcomes for every user. (2026 AI coaching study)
- Set observable response rules. For example, request one question at a time, suggestions tied to the facts you gave, assumptions labeled as assumptions, and a defined length or ending.
These instructions are practical applications of general prompting guidance, not a tested formula. A role label such as “mindset coach” alone does not tell the chatbot what to do with your situation.
Copy-and-adapt prompt
Act as a reflective mindset coach helping me think through one specific situation. Do not give me generic encouragement or assume you know what I feel.

Choose the kind of coaching conversation you want
There is no single best style for every situation. Make the preference clear for this conversation rather than expecting a broad persona label to determine it.
| Choice | Ask for this when… |
|---|---|
| Question-led or advice-led | You want to clarify your own view first, or you want direct suggestions after brief clarification. The coaching study describes both question-led and directive elements. (2026 AI coaching study) |
| Exploration or action | You want to understand a recurring pattern, or you need to decide what to do next. State which outcome matters today. |
| Supportive or challenging | You want a gentle reflection or a respectful challenge. Specify behaviors—for example, “point out a contradiction in what I said and ask whether I agree”—rather than relying only on “be empathetic” or “be tough.” OpenAI guidance supports describing tone; AP has reported concerns about language that can feel overly empathetic or authoritative. (OpenAI Help Center; Associated Press coverage) |
| Open response or bounded format | You are comfortable exploring freely, or you need something short and usable, such as three options and one question. OpenAI and AP recommend specifying the desired format or length. (OpenAI Academy; Associated Press coverage) |
These are ways to tailor the interaction, not evidence that one style works better for everyone.

How to turn a generic reply into a useful one
When the answer misses, identify the gap and supply the missing fact or instruction. OpenAI recommends reviewing a response and refining the wording, context, or request rather than assuming the first prompt must be final. (OpenAI Help Center; Associated Press)
- Generic praise: “Reflect back the specific choice or effort you noticed. If nothing specific stands out, skip praise and ask a useful question.”
- Advice that ignores your limits: “I have 20 minutes and cannot change my schedule this week. Suggest options that fit those constraints.”
- A list without help choosing: “Compare these options by effort, likely benefit, and downside, then ask which factor matters most to me.”
- An assumption treated as fact: “Separate what I told you from what you are inferring, and ask before relying on a major assumption.”
- Too much output: “Give me three short bullets and one question.”
Keep the AI coach in a limited role
Use an AI coach for reflection and planning, not as a substitute for diagnosis, treatment, or qualified mental-health care. In the 2026 study, the chatbot’s system instructions defined a coaching scope and limited discussion of therapeutic issues. That describes the study’s design; it does not show that a user-written prompt makes any AI system safe or clinically suitable. (2026 AI coaching study)
If you are in immediate danger, experiencing a crisis, or facing severe distress, seek appropriate human or emergency support rather than trying to solve the situation by improving a prompt. The sources cited here do not evaluate crisis handling or provide jurisdiction-specific support contacts.
