Print a poster across multiple sheets with Acrobat Reader
Adobe documents its Poster option for PDFs. If your image is a JPG or PNG, first use an image app that can print or export it to PDF. Save it as one page, keeping the image’s aspect ratio so it is not stretched. Adobe’s instructions for large documents are at Print large documents in Acrobat; Reader’s print options are also described in Print PDFs in Acrobat Reader.

- Make a one-page PDF. Open the image in an app with a PDF export or print-to-PDF option. Set the page orientation to suit the image and preserve its proportions.
- Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader. Choose Print, then select Poster under Page Sizing & Handling.
- Set the finished size. Adjust Tile Scale and review the preview. It shows how the page will be divided and how many sheets are needed.
- Choose assembly aids. Set an Overlap so neighboring sheets share an area for alignment. You can also enable Cut marks and Labels to help trim and order the pages.
- Check printer settings and print. Select the intended printer and a paper size it supports. Check orientation and color settings, then print a test or the full set.
- Assemble the poster. Arrange the sheets using their labels or the preview. Trim margins where needed, align the shared areas, and join the pages.
Adobe explains that “The Poster option calculates how many sheets of paper are needed.” The preview is still important: changing the scale changes both the finished dimensions and the tile arrangement.

Check margins, paper size, and image proportions
A desktop printer cannot print to the very edge of every sheet. Microsoft notes that desktop printers have nonprinting margins, so the tiled pages may have borders or require trimming and overlap. Check the selected printer’s supported paper sizes and the print preview; available sizes, margins, and print settings depend on the printer and its driver.

- Scale: Use the preview to confirm that the assembled image will be the size you intend.
- Overlap: Choose enough shared area to align adjacent sheets, without assuming a universal recommended value.
- Image shape: Preserve the original aspect ratio unless you deliberately want the image distorted.
- Test print: A plain-paper test can reveal orientation, scaling, or color surprises before you use more expensive paper. It is a practical check, not a guarantee of final print quality.
The cited product documentation does not establish a universal maximum poster size, minimum image resolution, guaranteed sheet count, or ideal overlap. Those outcomes depend on the image, chosen scale, paper, printer, and settings.

Publisher can lay out oversized publications and print them as horizontal or vertical tiles, with an option to adjust overlap. Microsoft’s instructions are at Create and print a banner, poster, or other large publication in Publisher. However, the article includes legacy instructions specific to Publisher 2007, so do not treat every step there as a current Windows 10 or 11 interface guide.
Publisher is also a short-term option: Microsoft says it will no longer be supported after October 2026 and Microsoft 365 subscribers will no longer have access after that date. For a PDF that is ready to print, Acrobat Reader provides the documented Poster workflow and controls for scale, overlap, cut marks, and labels. Publisher is useful when creating a large publication layout, but its approaching retirement makes it a time-sensitive choice.
