Detect the sheet’s corners or fiducial markers, map them to the exact page dimensions expected by your JSON template with an OpenCV perspective transform, then run your existing bubble detection and grading steps. This fixes planar tilt and keystone distortion; it does not flatten curled paper or remove glare and shadows.
Why fixed coordinates fail on angled photos
Your JSON template and the phone photo use different coordinate frames. A scanned page may match the template’s geometry, while an angled camera view projects the same rectangular page as a trapezoid. A fixed bubble coordinate can then land beside the intended mark. Rectifying the page first lets fixed coordinates remain useful, provided the sheet is flat and the transform is accurate.

OpenCV describes a homography as a mapping between two planes. Given corresponding points, it can correct the perspective of a planar sheet. The key is to transform the page into the same coordinate frame—not merely to make the photo look rectangular.
Build a perspective-correction pipeline
- Decode and orient the image. Normalize its orientation before detecting the page, and retain the original image so you can inspect failures.
- Find four reliable points. Detect the sheet boundary or use designed fiducial markers. Markers can be more dependable when the paper edge is obscured or difficult to distinguish, but require a form designed to include them.
- Order the points consistently. Pair each detected source point with its matching destination corner. Incorrect ordering can produce a flipped, crossed, or otherwise invalid warp. OpenCV’s getPerspectiveTransform API takes four corresponding point pairs.
- Map to the template’s exact page geometry. Set the destination rectangle to the dimensions and aspect ratio used by the existing coordinate map. Do not stretch the image to arbitrary width and height: doing so changes bubble positions relative to the template.
- Apply the transform. Use OpenCV’s
warpPerspectivewith the computed transform and the chosen destination size. The same OpenCV API documentation describes this operation. Check the documentation for the OpenCV version you use before relying on version-specific signatures. - Run the existing OMR steps. Apply your configured regions and coordinates to the warped image, then threshold, score the bubble regions, and compare results with the answer key. Inspect region crops and intermediate images when a mark is misread.
A public OMR implementation example follows this general pattern: it finds a sheet boundary, applies an aspect-ratio-aware transform, divides the warped page into configured regions, thresholds it, and evaluates bubble pixel volumes. Its particular defaults and methods are examples, not a benchmark or a universal recipe.

When a four-corner transform is not enough
A single homography assumes the sheet lies on one plane. If the page is curled, folded, or buckled, its interior can remain displaced even when the outer corners align. In that case, a global perspective warp may not put every bubble back at its template coordinate.
For a visibly curved page, either improve the capture so the paper lies flat or use a document-dewarping method that models spatially varying distortion. The 2021 DocTr paper addresses physical deformation and uneven illumination using geometric unwarping and a pixel-wise displacement mapping. It concerns document rectification and OCR, not a validated OMR grading system.

Handle lighting after geometry
Perspective correction changes page geometry; it does not eliminate shadows, glare, faint pencil, or print variation. After warping, inspect grayscale and thresholded images separately. Tune preprocessing and thresholding against your actual form and photos of both marked and unmarked bubbles. A threshold that works on a clean scan may fail under glare or uneven light.

Geometry and illumination are separate failure modes, so diagnose them separately.

Choose anchors and recovery paths for your forms
For flat forms, choose between detecting the paper boundary and using fiducials based on the conditions you expect. A clear page edge may be enough in uncluttered captures; markers offer known correspondences when the form can be changed. Neither approach is guaranteed to work through partial occlusion or poor image quality, so check detected points and the resulting warp.
For non-flat paper, compare the complexity of a recapture workflow with that of a non-planar dewarping method. For uneven lighting, compare preprocessing and thresholding options on representative images. The cited sources do not rank these approaches for a particular answer sheet or provide a universal confidence threshold.

- Test photos with different angles, rotations, shadows, glare, and partial occlusion—not only clean scans.
- Track alignment errors and grading errors separately so geometry problems are not mistaken for bubble-threshold problems.
- Route uncertain pages to manual review or recapture rather than silently accepting a score.
Why object detection is not the automatic alternative
Switching to an object detector such as YOLO is not inherently necessary just because phone photos are angled. If the form is flat and stable, correcting the page geometry first can preserve your coordinate-based approach. Object detection does not, by itself, solve page curvature, glare, or thresholding, and the cited sources do not establish that it would outperform a rectified coordinate pipeline for your form.

Start by validating corner or marker detection and the warped output. If those cannot reliably align a flat page in your capture conditions, reconsider the form anchors or capture process before choosing a more complex recognition method.

What accuracy can you expect?
There is no established accuracy figure here for your particular answer sheet, camera, marks, or lighting. The DocTr paper reports a 20.02% Character Error Rate for OCR; that is an OCR result, not an OMR bubble-reading score, and it does not predict grading accuracy. The public OMR code example is not an independently evaluated accuracy benchmark. Measure performance on representative forms and define a review path for uncertain cases.
