The Meade ETX-90 Observer is a compact, long-focus Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope with computerized GoTo controls, a tripod, two eyepieces, and a carry case. Its 90 mm aperture and 1250 mm focal length make it a plausible fit for lunar and planetary observing, but its narrow field and modest aperture are poor matches for sweeping wide star fields. This review covers the documented Observer package specifically; older ETX-90 versions may differ.
Which ETX-90 does this review cover?
“ETX-90” refers to more than one generation and package. The specifications and included accessories below describe the ETX90 Observer documented by Meade’s UK product page and manual. They should not be assumed for every older ETX-90, EC, or PE telescope. Meade’s product page is UK-based, and regional packages or availability may vary.

#1 Best Overall
- Control stray light, check focus and alignment, then cover your optics. This four-piece telescope kit combines a Premium light-control dew shield, tri-Bahtinov mask, isolation mask and dust cap.
- Included: One Premium baffled dew shield, one Tri-Bahtinov mask, one isolation mask and one dust cap. Telescope not included.
- One system, two ways to fit: The Tri-Bahtinov and cap fit your telescope directly or the included matching shield. Use the isolation mask with the Tri-Bahtinov in either setup.
- Stray light control: Internal rings, called baffles, interrupt wall reflections from unwanted off-axis light. Ray tracing informed the design. The cutaway is a design illustration; dimensions and baffle spacing vary by telescope.
- Telescope fit: Meade ETX-90 Mak. This listing is already sized for this telescope fit; no further model selection is needed. Black carbon-fiber-reinforced PETG (CF-PETG).
What can you see with the ETX-90?
The Moon and planets
Meade describes ETX90 and ETX125 models as suited to detailed lunar and planetary observing. The Observer’s long focal length and 90 mm aperture suit relatively high-magnification framing of bright targets, but that specification-based observation is not an independent performance test. The manual advises starting at lower magnification to find and center an object, then increasing power if conditions support it. If atmospheric turbulence makes the view fuzzy, reduce magnification.
Wide-field views and deep-sky observing
The f/13.8 focal ratio and 1250 mm focal length imply a comparatively narrow field of view. That makes the ETX-90 less suitable for broad views of large star fields or extended objects than a short-focus telescope. Its 90 mm aperture also limits light gathering compared with larger instruments, so expectations for faint deep-sky targets should be measured.
Meade’s imaging article discusses the ETX models and describes the ETX125 as the better of the pair for brighter deep-sky targets; it does not quantify ETX90 tracking accuracy or imaging results. It therefore does not support treating the ETX-90 as a proven deep-sky imaging setup. See Meade’s ETX astrophotography guidance.

How useful are the included eyepieces?
Magnification is telescope focal length divided by eyepiece focal length. With the Observer’s 1250 mm focal length, the supplied 26 mm eyepiece gives about 48× and the 9.7 mm eyepiece about 129×. These are calculated values based on Meade’s method, not guarantees that either power will produce a sharp view in every condition.
- 26 mm, about 48×: The lower-power choice for locating and centering objects, and the more forgiving starting point.
- 9.7 mm, about 129×: The higher-power choice for closer views when the target, telescope, and atmospheric conditions allow it.
The manual’s practical advice is to find an object at lower power before switching to a shorter-focal-length eyepiece. An additional eyepiece is optional, not a prerequisite; check that any accessory is compatible with the telescope’s 1.25-inch focuser and suits the observing you want to do. The calculation and observing guidance appear in the Observer manual.
What the GoTo mount adds—and what it does not establish
The dual-fork alt-azimuth mount and AudioStar controller are a substantial part of the Observer package: the controller provides access to a database Meade describes as containing 30,000 objects. This can help users select and locate catalogued targets, but the database size alone does not establish how accurately the telescope will point or track. The cited documentation does not provide an independent tracking test.

- Precision fit, lightweight, and durable for a stable alignment every time
- Easy to install and designed to match your telescope’s sleek profile.
The full-size steel tripod includes an EQ tilt plate for polar alignment. This supports an additional alignment approach, but the presence of the plate is not evidence of a particular imaging result. The mount remains an alt-azimuth system; check the manual for the setup and alignment procedure appropriate to the intended use.
Is the ETX-90 a good first telescope?
It can make sense for a beginner who values a bundled computerized mount and mainly wants to observe the Moon and planets. The two eyepieces, tripod, controller, and storage items make the documented Observer package more complete than an optical tube alone. GoTo also offers guided target selection, although it brings alignment and power considerations that a simple manual mount avoids.
It is a less natural first choice if the priority is wide-field observing, a very light complete setup, or deep-sky imaging. Before buying, compare the package contents and local price against other telescopes with the same intended use; current ETX90 pricing and stock have not been established here.

Thermal acclimation and practical setup
Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes use a relatively large corrector plate. Celestron’s explanation of this optical design says the larger, heavier corrector takes longer to reach ambient temperature. That is general design guidance, not a measured ETX-90 cooldown time; allow the instrument time to adjust to outdoor conditions rather than assuming immediate best performance. See Celestron’s Maksutov-Cassegrain and Schmidt-Cassegrain explanation.

The NexStar 90SLT is a relevant alternative because its documented headline optical specifications are also 90 mm aperture and 1250 mm focal length. Celestron describes it as having a computerized motorized alt-azimuth mount, tripod, and hand control. Similar headline specifications do not establish identical views, pointing, or tracking performance.

Can you attach a DSLR?
Meade’s documented route for DSLR prime-focus adaptation is the Meade #64 adapter for ETX90/105/125 plus a camera-specific T-ring. The parts connect using an M42 × 0.75 mm T-thread. They are separate components, and the correct T-ring depends on the camera mount; verify compatibility with the exact telescope and camera before buying. Meade’s instructions are at the ETX90 Observer manual.
Adapter compatibility is not a promise of suitable tracking or successful long-exposure astrophotography. The available product guidance does not quantify the ETX-90’s imaging yield.
What to inspect when buying a used ETX-90
